books read: 2025 april

I almost forgot my book recap for last month! So here it is, belated. It was a busy month but I did manage to read (webtoons!) and now that the semester is over, I've got time for fun and work/social justice reading. April was rainy with surprise snow, but it felt distinctly like spring emerging out of winter. May so far has been absolutely gorgeous.

Books, April 2025 )

Enjoying reading more webtoons, and currently also making time for some dramas! Enjoying Perfect Match right now for low-stakes historical romance.

The spring semester is flying by and staying busy, but I did get a mini trip down to Florida during part of spring break which was nice!

Still managing to read, but recently got deep into my new 4th gen kpop group after almost 12-13 years out of the scene...damn, I forgot how much content there is to consume, with MVs, dance practice vids, behind the scenes, variety shows, and now lives and so much more... OnlyOneOf does make me happy though, from their music and choreo to their absolute dumbassery (and pro-LGBTQ+ representation and support). It really is strange to be so aware of the business aspect of the way they sell personalities and relationships in kpop though. Even when it's "behind the scenes" or live from their dorms, it's still very obvious when they're working. Anyway, it is mostly fun for now. I'll enjoy it while I can!

Once I survive April, it'll slow down significantly in May! For some rest.

Just need to get to Spring Break...one more day! Spring semester flying by. I have no thoughts to share about my life, just a book recap dump. (I'm journaling daily irl!)

A busy mid January through mid February, but I have a breather now. I can catch up on doing the recap of my January reading.

Books, January 2025 )

The snow doesn't stop! It's beautiful and cold and I am tired of cleaning snow off my car constantly. But winter persists...couple more months, probably.

Just spent 7 hours today with our local AAPI civic/cultural org, doing a work retreat and getting dinner. Establishing human connections, sharing our reasons for being involved in the group, and brainstorming goals for the future of the org. Happy 2025! Here's to building.

Anyway, let me quickly wrap up my December reading:

Suddenly it's December! It's snowed in Rochester, light but beautiful; the roads were treated so they were easy to drive on. Will enjoy this snow before we get hit with the worse stuff. January and February get even colder.

Had a nice Thanksgiving and looking forward to Christmas/winter break. Planning a lot for spring semester events. Trying to stay healthy, cozy, connected.

Books, November 2024 )

As we start getting to the end of the year, I'm also thinking about the new year and what I want to read. A few new things, sure, plus the books I own that are unread. But I also want to do more rereads! So many beloved books deserve revisiting.

Well, here we are, post-election, in the world we made. I've been on an emotional roller coaster and will probably continue cycling through my feelings. Right now, I am mostly exhausted -- not just emotionally but also physically. I need to sleep soon. But here is a recap of books I read in October.

Books, October 2024 )

Moving forward I am resolving to read less news and pay less close attention to every movement on the national political scene. I need to tune in more to what is happening here, where I am, through my work and through where I choose to get involved in the Rochester community. I have impact I can make here, connections and coalitions I can build here, and I can give myself a little more breathing room. I'll read more in November, too.

books read: 2024 september

A very busy September at work, plus traveling and a major festival, meant I didn't read that much. Did a couple in that last weekend when I was sick though! (Still fully recovering my energy reserves.)

Books, September 2024 )

Life updates? Made Thanksgiving plans, adjusting to work and Rochester, hating F1...yeah, let's not get into that. Sports were a mistake (she says with a Buffalo Bills game on the background). Cool days are coming with fall, so going to try to enjoy the leaves, the cider, the cozy mornings where it's hard to get out of bed...

books read: 2024 august

August seemed to fly by: more time on the job, meeting people and being social, getting out a little bit in the Rochester area (plus we visited Buffalo). We need to do more outdoor parks/beaches and more one-day drives. So many cute things within an hour or two!

Did read a bit! F1 had summer break, then came back. We're traveling one weekend in September, to NYC, so hopefully that is a fun trip.

Books, August 2024 )

The library system here frustrates and confounds me, but it serves its baseline purpose. :') Plus I need to work through the books I own...

Started the new job! Reading will go down next month as I acclimate, I guess. Most of these were done before I started, but I'm trying to carve out evenings and weekends again -- balancing it with life errands/chores and also other social things. Making friends? Just being friendly with colleagues at this point, and also working on getting my office together. (I have an office!) It'll eventually feel more like me.

books read: 2024 june

Moved in June, so for about a week in there I was just in no headspace to read. Summer in Rochester is lovely, barring the one heat wave (a week of week of 90-degree weather) that passed. Time to explore more parks and maybe a winery.

Got my library card and am not particularly impressed by the local branch, but all I need is a place to pick up my holds and return my books. Thank goodness for interlibrary loan.

Books, June 2024 )

The job hunt was going well with a few different opportunities in process (varying stages), but was just made an offer this week I said yes to (a staff position at one of the two major universities in town). Maybe more on that later, but I'm excited! Will get a few weeks before the official start date, so I can still use this time to relax and get to know the city.

books read: 2024 may

This is late because I spent early June moving to New York. It was stressful but also fine! We are settled and unpacked, and I am continuing the job hunt -- applications and interviews abound.

Did a decent of reading May due to traveling twice: one weekend to NC for my brother's graduation, then the cruise to Alaska.

Books, May 2024 )

I got my Rochester Public Library card yesterday and still have access to my Houston/Harris County library ebook system, so now that we've settled in and I am not yet working, I am tackling a lot of reading!

Keeping track of the year through the F1 schedule: Miami was a good weekend, dramatic and interesting and good for me personally (VCARB points, livery) even if annoying at times (McLaren).

We enter May and I've officially removed all AST emails and such from my phone! I live in ignorant bliss now while I continue with the job application and interview process, and work on home improvements and logistics around listing/moving. There's a lot of social meetings in between, with a lot of gratitude for the fantastic people in our lives, and a sense of restlessness leading up to the Alaska cruise because I keep feeling like I should be "doing something". (Things are being done! I need to be chill in the downtime. Read my damn books.)

Anyhow, read a lot in April's spare time. Let's try for the same in May.

Happy April! We've set our moving date to June 4, so I've got about two months to focus on the Rochester job hunt, while wrapping up house cleaning, touch-ups, and sale as well as the logistics of a cross-country move. Also squeezing in a couple of fun trips and a visit back to NC for my brother's Ph.D. graduation. It was bittersweet to leave AST but also a relief, and a rare chance to rest while planning for the future.

And hopefully to read a lot! Here's a look back at March.

F1 in Suzuka this weekend and the peak cherry blossom trees are gorgeous. Total eclipse on Monday too! And NHL playoffs begin this month.

F1 is back, baby! There is...so much drama off track. On track, it looks like Max and Red Bull dominance yet again. I don't mind; I like following the mid-table. Plus the tumblr gifsets are fun.

It's 2024! Going to try to do book reviews by month again. I didn't end up catching up on One Piece again in January as I vaguely hoped to do, but I was dealing with some family and work things. And February will be a month of work insanity, so we'll see what I manage to get read. But I'm excited about my TBR list! Continuing to treat it as a "could read" list and adding and deleting things at will.

reading in 2023

Total books read this year: 125
Books read posts: Just review this tag.

Cnovels I read this year:
  • Bite Your Fingertips by Su Jingxian, my favorite non-esports cnovel!

  • Thinking of Deer Fei Fei by Mo Li, an entertainment world cnovel that was only...fine. I don't remember anything except the love interest being very tall!

  • I Ship My Adversary X Me by PEPA, a reread. (I also read the manhua, and it was adorable and beautiful.) Also a favorite.

Webtoons I read this year:
  • After School Lessons for Unripe Apples by Soonkki. An ongoing slice-of-life m/f romance between childhood acquaintances turned high school friends and then a slow burn romance.

  • Killer Crush by Eresemo. Ongoing silly m/m webtoon about a secret assassin who works in a convenience store and the famous actor he falls in love with.

My 2023 in reading. )

General thoughts:
I'm glad I reread a few things this year: I want to revisit more books that I love in 2024! Fewer cnovels/webtoons, but I do feel like I tried more genres I don't usually: sci-fi, anyway, some more literary fiction, different mystery setups. Still had my historical mysteries, interesting memoirs, and fairy tale adaptations. Fewer romances and fantasy stories on the whole, plus more non-memoir nonfiction (self-help essays/philosophy?). It's interesting how a lot of the nonfiction I read intersects and helps inform my thoughts on the others.

Next year I'd like to tackle more classics/older novels, continue the series I'm reading (Singing Hills Cycle, Murderbot, etc.), and read more authors translated from countries I haven't read before. And of course, as always, tackle my owned books...

The reading continued over the summer. Some reviews/reflections, which took enough energy that I have none remaining for life updates. There's been ups and downs but overall September/one week of October have been fine, holding steady, until this last lovely weekend of (finally) fall weather. Enjoying it, and Formula 1, amid everything else.

books read: 2023 apr-jun

The year is half over! Let's review books from the past three months. I have made decent inroads into my TBR list...and added a few more. I mostly wanted to make time to reread more stuff this year and I've been doing decently on that!

Books, Apr-Jun 2023 )

I am currently looking at Jude Morgan's regencies. I know I've read at least one of his books before (I want to say "A Little Folly") but I have no recollection. I should try to read "Indiscretion".

In non-reading news, work is tough and bad for my mental health (though I do really love and appreciate my coworkers), there has been a lot of stressful car/house stuff, and bad health news for my FIL. Hockey is in offseason (or wedding season) and I am halfheartedly paying attention to baseball (well, really just Shohei Ohtani) and trying to escape reality through fic and books. As usual. This state sucks.
