spring in DC
DC was fun! Sunny and chilly, much more so than Houston, which I appreciated because spring was over by mid-February here, I swear. Went from work to the airport early Friday morning, where I beat the stores being open...so waited for Dunkin Donuts to open at 5am to feed me my coffee and donuts! Actually, I got coffee and a breakfast sandwich, but same diff.
Metroed from DCA to Michelle's apartment, where I changed/pet her screaming cat/took a nap. Then I met up with Lille for happy hour food and drinks at Ezpita Mezocaferia, where I discovered that I hate tequila but mezcal is okay, especially when masked by pineapple. Also, fancy af tacos al pastor. Very good, but nothing beats the cheap $2 original stuff out of a food truck or from a hole-in-the-wall. But I digress. It was nice catching up with Lille, and we talked jobs, life, relationships, the works. Also had very tasty ceviche and wagyu beef crudo. Then made our way to the Verizon Center (now renamed Capital One Arena??) for HOCKEEYYYY. Canes at Caps, on the verge of being eliminated -- but they held on for me! (To be eliminated from playoff contention the next night, but whatever.) Michelle met us there, we got shots, the game passed quickly and was super fun. Lille had to leave us early because she was dying from knee pain, but Michelle and I caught up on life, occasionally jeering and cheering at the hockey game. Then stayed up and inexplicably watched a few episodes of Cheers when we got back to her apartment. Blame Ted Danson.
Saturday morning I had brunch at The Pig with Sarah! Face bacon was amazingly soft and tasty with a great mustard sauce; my shrimp and grits and cornbread were also great. On the other hand, the Bloody Mary was weak and not my favorite. McGinty's in Silver Spring probably still has my favorite of all time, though the one I had at Moonshiners in Houston was pretty close. We caught up on life and jobs and our pets! Lots of stories and pics, because her Max and my Taro are adorable. :D (Living that dog life vicariously.)
Walked around a bit after that, before I had to meet up with Michelle and Lille for a wedding dress appointment in Georgetown. We did the whole thing, but it sadly did not involve us getting champagne. But Lille found the bare bones of what she liked: blush pink, sparkly, lots of flowers. Now to find the perfect silhouette. Afterwards, we retired to Lille and Riley's apartment crosstown, where we drank wine and watched Netflix and generally lounged until Lille started cooking and Riley returned with eight bottles of wine. Then we ate delicious food! And drank. And had conversations about all and sundry. I barely remember, except vague ideas for a trip to Ireland in July.
Sunday I packed up and then Lille and Michelle and I had early brunch at Sfoglina, where we had amazingly tender octopus, delicious prosciutto, and freshly made pasta. Excellent all around. Then it was back to the airport, back to Houston, back to work, and back to being off my sleep schedule, completely sleep-deprived, and constantly tired. Only one more week of this! I will survive.
