The night before he left for the front lines, Zhou Mi brought over all his records in a cardboard box.

Kyuhyun had torn open the lid the second he wrestled it from the older boy's hands, tugging out a handful of cases and fanning them out on the carpet. Zhou Mi organized his collection carefully, alphabetically and by artist, but for once he didn't protest as Kyuhyun rifled through the discs, taking records out and sliding them back in regardless of order.

Kyuhyun had finally settled with an old favourite, placing it on the gramaphone before bringing down the needle. His fingers had slipped, and the needle had squealed as it scratched a long groove down the disc. Zhou Mi's smile faltered then, while Kyuhyun's hands grew clammy. It took him a full minute before he was calm enough to mutter an apology and switch the record for another he'd never listened to before, didn't end up liking.

The music hadn't mattered though, when Zhou Mi took him by the shoulders and pushed him back on the pull-out couch, when Kyuhyun had scrabbled at the zipper of Zhou Mi's pants and kicked off his own trousers. They'd fallen to each other, desperate and groping for a warmth Kyuhyun's broken heater didn't provide, a warmth Kyuhyun's broken heart still clung to. Zhou Mi had mouthed at his neck, wet and cold and Kyuhyun had shivered, tightened his thighs in an attempt to bring the other closer. When they came, Kyuhyun didn't let go of Zhou Mi's wrist, slinging a tense arm around the man's neck and pressing Zhou Mi's face awkwardly over his heart. Zhou Mi had murmured something about showering, but didn't move.

When morning came, bright and chilly, Zhou Mi was gone, leaving behind only his scattered records and a hastily penned note. Kyuhyun had laid naked on the threadbare couch for hours, thumbing the love, mi over and over until the pen streaked, dark against the white paper, a composite of the come still smeared over his stomach.

He still didn't understand, but what difference would it make if he did? All Kyuhyun could do was wait, and wait, and watch for the end of the war. Watch the grey skies for the hint of peace, for the hint of a bright smile he wasn't sure would survive.
