Supreme Court to hear arguments in DOMA and Prop 8 cases this week! I've been doing some reading:
Yeah, let's talk about the five inches of snow in DC today. Springtime, totally!
Ovi said it best:
I WANT TO WEAR MY PRETTY SPRING DRESSES ALREADY, DAMMIT. :(
In other news, really happy about Sasha's 5-year contract extension, and shaking my head over the fact that both the Canes goalies are injured.
Also, I finally got around to making an OKC profile and, let me tell you, in the two days of it, online dating has already been an adventure. I am torn between finding interesting people to chat with, ignoring obvious douchebags, despairing of the entirety of the male gender, and trolling in my message replies. Fun times.
- NYT had a piece on Roe's Shadow as Supreme Court Hears Same-Sex Marriage Cases made me roll my eyes so hard. To quote Above The Law - "Many have compared the possible outcome of the gay marriage cases to the Roe v. Wade decision, saying that constitutionalizing the right to gay marriage will create a similar culture war. Relax, bro, your bigotry is showing. You won’t be any less married if everyone has equal rights, promise."
- SCOTUS blog is fascinating as always. Here are two posts explaining the Court's authority to rule on the Prop 8 case and the arguments made by the amicus briefs in support of those issues that can be ruled upon. This is the post explaining DOMA. There's also a brief explanation the structure/procedure of how oral arguments go, which is...intereting to me, at least. D:
- The Atlantic an interesting article about How Will Justice Kennedy Decide on the Supreme Court's Gay Marriage Cases? and his conflicting opinions on supporting gay rights and states rights both. I don't dare be too hopeful, though: Never undermine the ability of a person to be a hypocrite on their own moral stances and justify it to themselves. Isn't that what makes us human? /sarcasm
- Scalia continues to be a douche, to no one's surprise. Though I don't necessarily disagree with the idea of law school education being a failure to actual practice of law, I take issue with what he takes issue with. (But I would totally have taken a "Law and Unicorns" case, much like
v_greyson talks "Torts & Werewolves". What's wrong with a subject that's not only interesting but forces you to apply the law to hypothetical situations - hey, isn't that every law school final ever?)
