Hockey RPF, Danny Briere/Claude Giroux, NC-17, 73,100 words
With two of his kids out of the house and nothing else to keep him busy in retirement, Danny goes to college. He makes friends with some of his classmates, and that thing where he sometimes hooks up with Claude turns into a real relationship.
Something about growing older, perhaps, makes me really love the kind of domestic relationship in Brioux futurefic -- not just about UST and realizing their feelings for the first time, but about how a relationship lasts over time, and what growth and change comes with it. Adults in healthy adult relationships, man. Sometimes it is nice to read.
I really loved that this fic was less about that initial get together and more about (as Danny puts it) growing into wanting to be together. It's about how a relationship happens and lasts after already hooking up, which is the climax and the end of a lot of shipfic, and how about the rest of the world/real life intersects with the relationship, kids and school and hockey and all.
Speaking of, loved the Briere kids. I always love them, but it's nice to see them written as older and with their own lives too, and how Danny, as any parent, has to react to that. The OCs were great -- each felt like they had a real distinct personality -- and it's clear that Danny and Claude have their own lives separate of each other but the way their lives intersect (due to choice and habit) is just really lovely.
Love all the details about school, hockey schedules, Danny's penchant for hapless rookies, Schenner cooking, Hartsy pranking, and so much more. Super long, delicious, comforting read. Lots of hot sex too, as a bonus.
