meitachi: (disney - mulan)
Back from NC after a short weekend trip! Went from work Friday morning - 3am - to get some food at a 24/7 deli nearby, then straight to the airport to fly to Raleigh. Picked up and had lunch at home, then took a walk in the nearby park/forest by the Falls Dam. Met up with my brother for dinner later in Morrisville at a Chinese restaurant that had formerly been a Korean restaurant. The food was excellent. We returned home to watch at lot of men's figure skating and have a lot of feelings. (Yuzuru Hanyu! Javier Fernandez! Also other people! But ask me if I'm shipping Yuzuru/Javier right now, just ask.)

Saturday, Kevin and I met Tim and his girlfriend Jisoo for lunch in Chapel Hill! She's a junior (one year younger than him), majoring in studio art and psych, also dances, very sweet. Honestly, I've been impressed with my brother's general good sense and plans for his future and the fact that he's actually made plans and done research and seems to have a fair idea of what he's getting himself into. He finished school in December, a semester early, with a Bio & Chem double major, and is working full time at a UNC lab now to make/save money before hoping to move out to LA for dance stuff late summer or even next year? In any case, he's also still teaching dance workshops/keeping that up. The one thing he does need to think about now is keeping track of income/expenditures for taxes...ah, adulthood. (Speaking of which, I need to find time to refile all my docs in new hanging folders and then do my taxes.)

Went to a CNY dinner party in Cary Saturday night -- some family friends I didn't really know, but they had a kid who's like 6-7 years younger than me named Lisa. She'd apparently been to our house before for a dinner party? Honestly, my mom constantly has so many people over I never remember them. In any case, she'd gone to UNC, was a flight attendant for United now, had just brought her Spanish boyfriend home for the first time, so at least Kevin wasn't the only white guy there? They were nice, we talked, drank wine, etc. We watched some of the CNY eve gala and saw the blackface skit and ughhhh. China, what are you doing.

Sunday we did a quick hike/walk through Durant Nature Park, had Bojangles, and went to the airport. Over the course of the weekend, we managed to have a couple convos about race and racism with my parents that didn't end horribly (i.e., with me yelling) and like maybe my parents even saw a new perspective a little? So I'll chalk it up as a win. It was good to see them albeit briefly, and good to know my brother's doing well. Time flies and we all change so much. (And my parents keep buying new furniture and dishes and bedding and changing around the entire house when I'm not around; it's just a thing now. We still have a gazillion orchids, an orange tree, and a banana tree inside though. Just for kicks.)

From the airport to dinner in Houston midtown, then straight to work! I survived the shift and came back to sleep. Today, a brief return to routine: exercise, shower, errands/to-do list, cook, work again. I have Thursday off, then we're going to Boston Fri-Sun for a reunion weekend type deal with Kevin's Maryland grad school friends.
