That Ubiquitous Christmas Wishlist Meme
Step One
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Severus/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.
Step Two
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy.
Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

reaction. Honestly I can't decide if I'm more in love with Hanchul or Sichul. Regardless, this fic is precious, because I love Hankyung and Siwon is utterly adorable like the puppy he is. This is borderline bittersweet, but it is mostly sweet. It's a bit of a slice-of-life moment, but it's more than that too, with something larger lurking unsaid in the background. It's inconclusive, incomplete, almost, and perfect like that.

reaction. Honestly, the number of 2nd person POV fics in boy band fandom is going to drive me insane one day. But I suppose I should count my blessings that quite a number of them are actually quite good (some even phenomenal), and that none of them are 1st person. ;) As to the fic itself, it's...not exceptional. That doesn't mean it's bad, no, it's very good, it just doesn't stand out in any extraordinary way. But there's a certain quality--possibily its familiarity, its almost-cliché theme--that lends the fic a lovely overall feeling, like the firm support you can always depend on (like Kangin is to Leeteuk).

summary. 2nd person | You just wonder how long it’ll last.
reaction. This fic is like a punch to the gut. One of my favorite things about fanfiction is that it doesn't have to be realistic at all; it's an escape, it's fun, it's all about the fantasy. But that makes the realistic fics even more powerful, at least to me, because it reminds you that life is not all about the fantasy. This fic--this fic is simply breathtaking. It speaks to me on so many levels, first and foremost to my weakness for the Hanchul friendship. From what I've seen of it, the bond between the two of them despite the language barrier is incredibly strong. Heechul cares so much, which says something all on its own, and I really find his characterization here absolutely believable. I buy into it. I. I can't even find the right words to express how good I think this fic is--to the point where I don't even think of it as fic. It's practically like someone transcribed Heechul's thoughts for me (helpfully, in English). It's amazing. (As a perk, the Cpop references were fun too.)

reaction. ...okay, I gotta stop reading angsty fics for this pairing. It is breaking my heart for Donghae. Oh Donghae, why does everyone do this to you? This is painful, painful, painful. That's all you get. It's beautifully written but the end will upset you and the middle will upset you and overall it is a rather upsetting piece. Especially if you love Donghae. alkdjfld. But it was also hot. In a, you know, painful way. No, really, it's worth the read. Just be prepared to be kind of weepy.

reaction. Oh fuck yes. P0rn. I was so upset last round of fic recs because there was not enough smut in this fandom. I've found some this time around and it pleases me so, so much. Sapphy's recced this already but, well, I gotta have my say, right? *G* It's hot, good lord yes. Club fic. SuJu doing some filthy, filthy clubbing. It's so hot alkdjfl. I actually find Kibum a tad unbelievable in this (no way he's that evil), but it's still hot so I don't mind. The mention of Donghae's sexiness and KangTeuk totally broke my brain early on. I was a mess of hormones for the rest of the fic and, god, it totally lived up. Siwon really is such a good boy: so earnest, serious, well-meaning. A total puppy. I like him getty a little dirty with our filthy-sexy-totally-fuckable Kibum. Guh. Fandom, do more fics like these please.

reaction. See? See? This is the kind of fun, light-hearted, sexy fic I want to find for KangTeuk! It seems so much easier for Kangchul, though, maybe because the two of them are just so snarky and funny. God, I love the snark of this pairing. This is hilarious and also has smut. Such a fun read that, I promise, will not have you contemplating deep thoughts and on the verge of tears at the end. Refreshing! Also, fabulous ending.

reaction. aldkjflskd. I am a gibbering puddle on the floor. This fic is just too mind-meltingly hot for words. OMFG. It's also a mindfuck, in both a literal and figurative sense. Hot all over. Gah. I totally and completely give up on a coherent review for this fic. It's well-written smut and it's a mindfuck. What else do you need?

I know I whore out characters younger than him. But it still breaks my brain a little bit, possibly because he's the only member younger than me.)

reaction. Like I said in my reaction to "Digging a Hole to China", lighthearted, fun fanfic is always enjoyable--but once in awhile, the realism will creep into someone's writing and blow me away with the Facts of Real Life. This fic does that. It uses the idea of Hankyung being gay--and not living in our fangirl-happy world where the rest of his bandmates are also gay and happily paired off. In fact, he's not even in the world where he gets to find true love with Heechul or Siwon or, hell, Sungmin if he wants. No, this fic places him in the harsher world of our reality, where being gay has reprecussions, where people are uncomfortable when they find out, when being different in just one more way is achingly painful. This fic had some beautiful lines, some wonderfully (if hurtful) realistic reactions, but my absolute favorite part of this fic? Heechul. Heechul. I don't think I've ever loved him more. Forget being girlishly pretty or sharp-witted and sarcastic--I love Heechul for the depth of his care for his friends. But, er, immense amounts of Hankyung love as well. Just in case you forget this fic is primarily about him. :)

The latter is so middle school. Heh. Seriously, this was a lovely little feel-good fic that was not all insubstantial fluff, but was not heavily weighed down by The Serious either. It's adorable, much like this pairing. Read the short companion piece too! (Sidenote: yes, if you're wondering, the passing mention of KangTeuk had my inner fangirl asphyxiating in glee; but then I revived myself and continued on with the fic, thank you very much.)

reaction. ...please don't judge me! I never meant to read EunHae! It just happened, somehow, because I was wooed by this girl's writing. It's completely fantastic. This piece was written for her Intro to Fiction class (I'm so jealous) and it's--heartwrenching. It will rip your heart out and stomp on it. I was a mess by the end, totally weeping and heart aching, omfg. Don't break me like this, EunHae. I don't even ship you past friendship! But god. This is a brilliant, brilliant piece of writing. As the summary says, a look at the EunHae relationship from the eyes of others. I can't even do this fic justice. I should go comment on it properly and flail about it and let the author know how much it affected me. Favorite section: the one with Kibum and others. But the one with Heechul made me, you know, love on Rella more (and more).

reaction. Yessss. Lengthy and plotty and detailed and so wonderful. I am totally in love with her Sungmin. I love that he is pink and cute and yet so badass. I love the vampire AU. I am growing to like Kyuhyun now too, with the tie-in to his accident and his music, oh baby. I am all over the Kibum and Donghae cameos (KiHae!) and I am nearly bouncing in anticipation for the next installment (which is KangTeuk, you have no idea of my glee). Lovely rich world. :D

reaction. Well fuck me sideways, right? Who would've thought I would deviate from KangTeuk OTP? I confess, it's her characterization of Leeteuk that pulled me in and sucked me under. His fears, his anxiety, his frustration, regrets, bitterness. This is post-accident Leeteuk introspection and it kills me. I love him so much, wtf. The ease between Hankyung and Teukie--the way things go unsaid, even Teukie's self-recrimination about complaining. aldkjdk god, it breaks me. The passage with the most impact for me was the very last one, about the taxi (but my favorite was the mention of Kangin, okay, I'm a stupid fangirl, leave me alone T_T). God, ache. They all try so hard.

reaction. Immense, immense love for this fic. I'm pretty sure I have this huge soft spot for Hanchul relations. I love how confused Hankyung is, how he hurts, how Heechul is careless the way he is. I love Kibum's cameo, I love the little details about Heechul's eccentricity (total bizzareness), love the turmoil of Hankyung's feelings. I love the dialogue: simple, effective, telling (so expressive). I love that Hankyung and Heechul are both still themselves in the end, so very much themselves, and still everything works out. It's a wonderfully well-rounded fic, with a little bit of humor, ache, sweetness, introspection, confusion, frustration, and ease.

reaction. Another fic that totally wrecked me. It's not easy standing out in a crowd of thirteen, and sometimes when you fight to not be invisible, you have to make sacrifices. But that doesn't make it any easier. It doesn't hurt less, knowing what you're giving up. It's the character study of Hyukjae and Sungmin in this that make me want to cling to it and cry because it's hard and it hurts and I'm sorry. But, um, despite all my weepy comments, the ending is quite sweet.

I cried because it's hard being screamed at, hard to fit in when you don't understand, hard because there are no easy answers. I cried not only for Henry but for Leeteuk, because being leader is more responsibility than you ever could have imagined and full of impossible decisions and a lack of real choice. Okay, I admit it: it was the Leeteuk segment that won me over completely to this fic. I felt for Henry, I did, but it was Teukie's struggles that broke my heart. The burden of responsibility...

reaction. Classic and recced by everyone and their mother. A beautiful fic about all the boys, a little peek into each of their minds from the earlier days. It hurts in wonderful ways, because it's an exploration into the past after knowing their future, and a brief look at how things were before these relationships were built. It's a little heartrending but only because I am such a nostalgia freak. The last section is particularly wonderful (and my favorite) because it's a glimpse at the bonds that have developed. I'm also especially endeared to Hankyung's section because I understood the Chinese; Donghae's section broke my heart for everything that went unsaid, and the painful homesickness. I have a family thing, okay? :| I know it.

reaction. Honestly, I'm only reccing this because it's one of the few gramatically-correct and non-character-butchering KangTeuk fics I've read that are lighthearted. Why the dearth of feel-good fics for this pairing? I love angst as much as the next girl, really, but Leader-sshi and Raccoon can't spend all their time together (and apart) being emo! Ugh, I just want a happy non-crack fic for them. Is that so much to ask? :(

Er, so while I was reading all these SuJu fics, I inevitably encountered the odd fic with DBSK characters (see above). Then I was reminded how fond I was of JaeHo/YunJae, and began wondering if there were any decent fics for them. I didn't wander very far in my search, going only so far as to click the "jaeho" tags of SuJu authors I knew were good authors, so here is what I found.

reaction. ...it's hot. I can't speak as to characterizations, but I really liked the sort of halting stop-and-go flow of their relationship. Storytelling and language was lovely, smut was delicious, and the gradual ending was satisfying. :D

But that makes the realistic fics even more powerful, at least to me, because it reminds you that life is not all about the fantasy. This fic--this fic is simply breathtaking. It speaks to me on so many levels, first and foremost to my weakness for the Hanchul friendship. From what I've seen of it, the bond between the two of them despite the language barrier is incredibly strong. Heechul cares so much, which says something all on its own, and I really find his characterization here absolutely believable. I buy into it. I. I can't even find the right words to express how good I think this fic is--to the point where I don't even think of it as fic. It's practically like someone transcribed Heechul's thoughts for me (helpfully, in English). It's amazing. (As a perk, the Cpop references were fun too.)

That's all you get. It's beautifully written but the end will upset you and the middle will upset you and overall it is a rather upsetting piece. Especially if you love Donghae. alkdjfld. But it was also hot. In a, you know, painful way. No, really, it's worth the read. Just be prepared to be kind of weepy.

I actually find Kibum a tad unbelievable in this (no way he's that evil), but it's still hot so I don't mind. The mention of Donghae's sexiness and KangTeuk totally broke my brain early on. I was a mess of hormones for the rest of the fic and, god, it totally lived up. Siwon really is such a good boy: so earnest, serious, well-meaning. A total puppy. Such a fun read that, I promise, will not have you contemplating deep thoughts and on the verge of tears at the end. Refreshing! Also, fabulous ending.

Like I said in my reaction to "Digging a Hole to China", lighthearted, fun fanfic is always enjoyable--but once in awhile, the realism will creep into someone's writing and blow me away with the Facts of Real Life. This fic does that. It uses the idea of Hankyung being gay--and not living in our fangirl-happy world where the rest of his bandmates are also gay and happily paired off. In fact, he's not even in the world where he gets to find true love with Heechul or Siwon or, hell, Sungmin if he wants. No, this fic places him in the harsher world of our reality, where being gay has reprecussions, where people are uncomfortable when they find out, when being different in just one more way is achingly painful. This fic had some beautiful lines, some wonderfully (if hurtful) realistic reactions, but my absolute favorite part of this fic? Heechul. Heechul. I don't think I've ever loved him more. Forget being girlishly pretty or sharp-witted and sarcastic--I love Heechul for the depth of his care for his friends. But, er, immense amounts of Hankyung love as well. Just in case you forget this fic is primarily about him. :)

(Sidenote: yes, if you're wondering, the passing mention of KangTeuk had my inner fangirl asphyxiating in glee; but then I revived myself and continued on with the fic, thank you very much.)

I was a mess by the end, totally weeping and heart aching, omfg. Don't break me like this, EunHae. I don't even ship you past friendship! But god. This is a brilliant, brilliant piece of writing. As the summary says, a look at the EunHae relationship from the eyes of others. I can't even do this fic justice. I should go comment on it properly and flail about it and let the author know how much it affected me. Favorite section: the one with Kibum and others. But the one with Heechul made me, you know, love on Rella more (and more).

I am all over the Kibum and Donghae cameos (KiHae!) and I am nearly bouncing in anticipation for the next installment (which is KangTeuk, you have no idea of my glee). Lovely rich world. :D

The ease between Hankyung and Teukie--the way things go unsaid, even Teukie's self-recrimination about complaining. aldkjdk god, it breaks me. The passage with the most impact for me was the very last one, about the taxi (but my favorite was the mention of Kangin, okay, I'm a stupid fangirl, leave me alone T_T). God, ache. They all try so hard.

reaction. Immense, immense love for this fic. I'm pretty sure I have this huge soft spot for Hanchul relations. I love how confused Hankyung is, how he hurts, how Heechul is careless the way he is. I love Kibum's cameo, I love the little details about Heechul's eccentricity (total bizzareness), love the turmoil of Hankyung's feelings. I love the dialogue: simple, effective, telling (so expressive). I love that Hankyung and Heechul are both still themselves in the end, so very much themselves, and still everything works out. It's a wonderfully well-rounded fic, with a little bit of humor, ache, sweetness, introspection, confusion, frustration, and ease.

reaction. Another fic that totally wrecked me. It's not easy standing out in a crowd of thirteen, and sometimes when you fight to not be invisible, you have to make sacrifices. But that doesn't make it any easier. It doesn't hurt less, knowing what you're giving up. It's the character study of Hyukjae and Sungmin in this that make me want to cling to it and cry because it's hard and it hurts and I'm sorry. But, um, despite all my weepy comments, the ending is quite sweet.

It hurts in wonderful ways, because it's an exploration into the past after knowing their future, and a brief look at how things were before these relationships were built. It's a little heartrending but only because I am such a nostalgia freak. The last section is particularly wonderful (and my favorite) because it's a glimpse at the bonds that have developed. I'm also especially endeared to Hankyung's section because I understood the Chinese; Donghae's section broke my heart for everything that went unsaid, and the painful homesickness. I have a family thing, okay? :| I know it.

Please tell me there is good non-angsty DBSK fic. Almost everything I've seen so far is SO ANGSTFUL (& kind of pretentiously so) WTF. The SuJu fics I've recced above are not angsty for the sake of being angsty (because that bugs me so much), but are poignant and moving in a little ways that make me cry because I cry at everything. I am so annoyed with angstfics, augh.

I don't know really! I only dipped my toes into the DBSK fandom, so I only have angsty fic. It is the easiest to find, and so good angsty fic is easiest to find for them. Ask Em, though! She recced me some Jaeho once. My entire sojourn in the SJ fandom was soaked in angst and twistedness. 8D *so unhelpful*
