did you ever think you would be alive?
Jun. 26th, 2013 02:12 pmFirst, the happy news:
1. Supreme Court struck down DOMA on equal protection grounds! Prop 8 reversed on standing grounds, which at least opens up same-sex marraige in California again.
SCOTUSblog gets all my love for their coverage. So I'll just point you, as always, in their direction.

- Perry (Prop 8 case) in Plain English (full text of Perry decision)
2.Chicago Blackhawks, 2013 Stanley Cup champions, and Patrick Kane, Conn Smythe recipient. Fuck yeah!

3. Wendy Davis is amazing. (Click all the links!)
But this actually also falls in the less great news, because it is all at once incredible of her and incredibly frustrating and infuriating of lawmakers who continually strive to strip women of their reproductive rights.
So to segue into the less great news:
1. The Supreme Court's 5-4 decisions (same dissenters, i.e., the liberal court Kagan, Sotomayer, Ginsburg, Breyer) against employee protections, and vacating Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which effectively nullifies Section 5 until Congress can get its shit together (i.e., never). We manage to move backwards at the same time we move forwards, which is perhaps why progress takes so long. It's a constant battle.
Worth the read, on Section 4 of the VRA: Shadowboxing and unintended consequences
2. Flyers. FLYERS. Why must you constantly rend my heart so? First with the buyout of Danny's contract, and then with the buyout of Bryz. Fuck you, I hope Bryz goes off somewhere else and wins a Vezzina. While I cry. At least my Canes are together and their worst crime thus far having been a commitment to ugly-ass uniforms.
No, but seriously. Being alive to witness a landmark Supreme Court case being decided on equality - second by second via liveblog? That's pretty damn historic.

Beautiful moment. Two goals in 17 seconds is unreal.
