Food for thought, February edition
Feb. 19th, 2015 03:03 pm1. The U.S. doesn't have laws requiring the news to be true. Thanks, Reagan!
(This is an old article, but I'd saved the link because the discussion was interesting, albeit...disheartening, to say the least. As someone who works with news media daily, it's also aggravating and unsurprisingy.)
2. What if animals were round? They'd be freaking adorable, that's what. But life would be hard. Something short and cute for a moment of cheer in terrible weather.
3. The 2022 Qatar World Cup is going to take place in November/December. How? This is going to disrupt so much. I have so many questions. So does the world.
4. An interesting read on Harper Lee's "sequel" to To Kill a Mockingbird and whether or not her lawyer and agent are manipulating her. Also a fascinating glimpse into her life and history around TKAM.
And a related long read from Vulture.
I don't know that anyone can say for sure what the truth is, but it's troubling behavior... and perhaps a pattern of troubling behavior. I am definitely hesitant to buy the sequel now. (I was wary of sequels in general, because many of them are not always necessary or often ruin a good thing. One of the most important skills in storytelling that I think gets overlooked in the day and age of making profit off franchises, or even how to get more kudos, is knowing when to end a story. I really loved To Kill a Mockingbird and I think it stands perfectly alone.)
5: Lenovo caught installing adware on its computers, causing security risks. Check for relevant info here or here.
I'm not sure I understand quite all the technical jargon, but the breakdowns are very disturbing, and it's raised red flags among all the people who are more tech-savvy than I am, so that is usually not a good sign.
I checked my certificates and appear to be OK, whew!
SPORTS CONTINUE TO BE THE WORST.
