[meta] what Super Junior means to me

The most moving account of Super Show II I've read, because Fuu has a way with words, a way with language, that moves me to tears. It makes me relive the night, the high, and want so badly to be back in that stadium, short of breath and screaming with the thrill anyway.

Edited slightly from a comment I wrote to [livejournal.com profile] gymnopediste:

You know, people will judge you a lot for liking boy bands, Korean or otherwise. It's just...how life goes, with music elitists and snobs and such. "It's not ~real~ music," they say, deploring your taste. But you know what? They're missing out. Because it's not just about the music. With these boys, it's also about the variety shows and the cyworlds and the movies and MVs and concerts and everything good and hilarious and wonderful - and most of all, it's about their friendships and their love for each other and the fans. What Western band do you know would have a concert like this? Where they would do so much for the fans, to thank them, to interact with them, to make sure they have the time of their lives?

Korean boy bands are different that way. Super Junior, to me, is even more special because there are so many of them and that means they can pull off some spectacular things that other five-member groups can't.

Plus, thirteen/fifteen-way friendships and love? That's unmatched, right there. And in the end, it does come down to the fact that they make me incredibly happy. And that's why I love them. ♥

I don't need a better reason than this. So judge me if you want for being a "boy band fan", but the fact remains that they make me happy and they gave me one of the most memorable (even life-changing, though this is a topic for my RL journal) experiences of my life, and that is more than enough for me to be proud in my love for them.

It's okay, you don't have to understand. :)

But if you do - all the better.

(In other news: OH MY GOD SMUT IS SO HARD AND TEDIOUS TO WRITE. Thank god for people like [livejournal.com profile] thundersquall who will write it for me. :3 Unexpected, KiHae, NC-17, corporate!AU. Delicious.)

Hey, like what you like. I'm sure I could like it too if I got into it. (As it is I know very little about boy bands hahaha.)

I enjoy your posts about it, actually. Your excitement is easy to catch! ♥

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
adkjfs not directing this post to anyone in particular, obviously, especially my flist, which is awesome. Just...there are a lot of music snobs in life, and that's always been one of the things about being in kpop that makes me :/.

But ♥♥ you are so sweet and thank you!

What Western band do you know would have a concert like this? Where they would do so much for the fans, to thank them, to interact with them, to make sure they have the time of their lives?

NONE. And that's why people can fucking judge me if they fucking want to. Judge us all. They're the ones missing out on the good stuff and hey... more for us.

Super Junior's gotten me through rough times and I'm so thankful for them, even if they'll never fucking know it.

I've NEVER committed to any musical artist as much as I have Super Junior and some people might think that's sad, but I don't because I love them. I wish them nothing but happiness. I laugh when they're laughing and funny, I cry when they're sad and even when they aren't sometimes cuz I just FEEL for them. I cheer for them. I sing as much of the songs as best as I can. I prayed for Super Junior when I didn't even think I was capable of praying anymore. I don't know Korean but that doesn't matter because support and love and music are universal and don't need the same language to be felt and heard. And I'll stand by ALL 15 of them long after the spotlight has faded. They're my boys... they're my boys and I love them.

Give me flack about how silly it is to like a boy-band from Korea when I haven't a clue what they're saying. Give me grief about how that's so "not black" of me to do this. I don't care. I don't care. Just give me my happiness and my miracles and my 15 amazing boys and it's all good. So thanks guys...

And thank the rest of you all that get it. Esp. Mei, whose post I just couldn't stop talking on... but think of it as another one of my long reviews. XD

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
haha no, it's a good comment. I agree with its sentiment. ♥ This is what they are to us. They are more than just the stereotypes other people see. So what if they don't get it? What matters is what we get out of it.

[identity profile] mardigrasmaven.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Plus they put forth a ton of effort JUST to make the fans happy. They want to get it right FOR the fans. So it also upsets me when fans keep doing ONLY 12, 13, 14 I say 15, but now all the damn numbers are coming out, only 26, whut?. These boys are happy as 15 and are asking for their fans to stand by them and protect Super Junior. They've done so much, why can't we do just this little for them? Support ALL of them? Since nobody's going anywhere, I just see it as more people to love. Yea, they weren't there from Jump Street, but since when has that been a crime.

I'm glad that we can see eye to eye on this, y'know? ♥

one of my best male friends sneers at my love of what he considers "generic", maufactured pop but i don't really care. i don't love my boybands solely because of the music; that's just a part of it. besides, it's not as if ~real music~ holds that much appeal, either; the only artist i've really hung on to since my initiation into kpop is jason mraz. though some snobs could argue that mraz is getting too radio-friendly, too, so YES, RLY, there's no pleasing some people.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, music elitists seriously piss me off. LISTEN TO WHAT YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO AND I'LL LISTEN TO WHAT I WANT TO, okay? Jesus, why do we need to make a production of judgment out of that?

Besides? The classic stuff like the Beatles that they claim is the "real" music? It was all mainstream pop back then when they were big. Only time has made them ~classic~.

/annoyed at music snobs

[identity profile] mondaythe26th.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I wholly agree to this. *nods*
I couldn't have said this better myself... --;

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you agree. ♥

[identity profile] gymnopediste.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 08:39 am (UTC)(link)

EXACTLY.
sorry, i haven't replied to your comment yet, but ah, just THIS.
i sometimes feel like a bit of a hypocrite, because i feel sort of like an elitist with the western music i listen to and western pop just makes me cringe, but seriously, western pop as a whole concept has nothing on kpop in my opinion. as you said, it's about so much more than the music, but i won't say that the music is insignificant.

Plus, thirteen/fifteen-way friendships and love? That's unmatched, right there.
and this. super junior's whole group dynamic has messed up my views so bad. now i expect everyone in pop bands to have these close relationships or at least expect them to care deeply about each other. and it makes me all O_O when i hear even rumors that some 5 or 4 member band doesn't have good relationships among themselves. like if 15 people can make it work so well, HOW ON EARTH CAN'T THEY?! and i also expect members of different bands to be friends and aaaaaghh why do you do this to me, super junior?!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, don't worry about replying. This is good. :) And...pretty much yes to what you said, haha. Except I guess I'm not that elitist about my Western music - but I haven't really even been listening to Western music recently, after first jpop then kpop (and now cpop) has stolen my heart and playlist.

So not everyone in SJ15 is BFF - but they are all obviously close and important to eaach other. And that. That is awesome. ♥
