# Reading SPN and HP epic longfic and being ridiculously jealous (and admiring) of the way those fandom authors can write so much so well. (My corporate!AU is undergoing beta right now and the entire process is terrifying. Longfic is hard and it is scary. I'm unused to this! /clutches at people's hands. Hopefully it gets easier with practice but a part of me also laughs hysterically and thinks: Like hell I'd put myself through this again? I will never break 10k again. ;__;)

# On the topic of HP fic, let me rec this incredible H/D fic:

Trajectories
Harry/Draco, PG, drama/plot/8th year fic, 35000 words
Rembrandt's phrase in describing his painting: "Die meeste ende di naetureelste beweechgelickheijt", can be translated as greatest, most natural movement (emotion or motive).


This is an 8th year fic that reads like the books - funny, moving, deep. It answers questions JKR never did, explores grief and missteps and how people learn and grow. It is much more about the characters (and god the characterization is stunning) than it is merely about H/D. I'll copy & paste some of the comments people left to the fic because they say it better than I can (non-spoilery, except that this fic revolves around Potraits):

» This is so amazing that I am very near death. I fucking loved it. Everything. The portraits, Hermione actually facing consequences for her actions, Ron's stubbornness, the way Harry slid into a relationship with Draco, how right all of the characterizations were, Dennis Creevey not being a hyper imp of ridiculousness, Portriat!Fred, the stick figures, the flying, the kiss--EVERYTHING.

» I think what I loved most about this fic—besides the idea of the portraits, Harry and Draco tentatively becoming friends and then more, Hermione going her own way for a bit, and the plausible ending of Ginny and Harry's relationship—is the fact that I can imagine this as an alternate ending to the actual books. It felt more like canon—the pain, the awkwardness, the strange mysteries—than anything I've read in a while. While this was certainly a H/D fic, I also got the impression that this was Harry Potter. Ron was a fantastic, complex character. I never really thought how he would deal with Fred's death in canon, since I don't read enough Ron-fic to know.

» This was a remarkably beautiful fic. I'm blown away. It was just... wise and grown up and so well executed. I teared up more times than I can remember, and the things you said about grief and moving on, and how the love of our friends and family can help us do that, were incredibly astute. This has touched me really deeply. I've read a lot of fics about moving on after the war, but there was something really immediate about the way you wrote this. Probably because it took place at Hogwarts and was so rooted in canon. There were so many moments, so many things and choices and characterisations that I just adored.

» For someone looking for the hot, passionate, powerful H/D in a fic, this may not be the story you're looking for. But for someone seeking an answer to all those questions about them as people, and friends, and wanting to see the 'something else' between them happen as naturally as breathing, this is definitely the story to read.

To top this off - this story amazed me so much I actually left a comment, and I lurk hardcore when I read fic in HP fandom. So yeah. Stunning stuff. ♥ Give it a shot?


# While I'm reccing fics, I just recced a Calvin & Hobbes fic to mytigerhobbes and since it's a fic that I love beyond words, I thought I should share. It's...moving, and a little sad, but hopeful too, on how kids grow up. Totally gen, but wrenching. Tissue warning. Seriously.

MINHO/DONGHAE, YOU GUYS. This pairing is shooting up into my ridiculous biases, like KiHae, QMi, HaeSica, CinHae... You are imagining the trend in my shipping. So she asks me how I would plot an epic non-AU Minho/Donghae get-together fic.

(8:56:12 PM) sweet as sunshine ☀: um i think i'd have to go with the drunken kiss trope. just bc... it could work? they go out and drink with everyone and people get flirty and teasing the more they drink and donghae ends up sitting in minho's lap, laughing
(8:56:36 PM) sweet as sunshine ☀: and they get teased for being couple-y and there is a drunken kiss? and then awkwardness the next day and for a while after that?
(8:57:23 PM) sweet as sunshine ☀: then they finally talk it out and minho confesses his crush and donghae is like: i'm flattered but i just love you as a dongsaeng... and that would be that! except donghae keeps thinking about it.
(8:57:47 PM) sweet as sunshine ☀: and imagining it. and admitting to himself that minho is really really attractive... and then it would go from there?

coley_merrin, upon learning that I wrote a freaking essay over IM, had this to say: Not something you've thought about then I guess XD

And my reply is that I would basically be totally okay with hot gratuitous smut, okay? Voyeuristic smut. sdgkh please, Minho would totally get off on watching Donghae get off. Or blow Donghae's mind by getting off in front of him.

I like to share things that make me happy and that fic made me very, very happy. I've read a lot of H/D in my time and that one stands out, I think, by focusing so much on the characters and their development in a post-war world rather than solely on a dramatic plot or getting H & D together... HP is one of those fandoms that I've never been truly "active" in but has always provided me a wealth of awesome fic to read whenever I feel like going back to it. :D It's nice to have a fandom that large constantly producing. ♥

But I guess I should have because you always, always do write such awesome things. ♥ True fact: it's the only fic of the exchange I managed to comment on (I suck, I know), but that's because it blew me away the way no other fic did.
