tonight, your drinks and dreams are on me
First! Some notes for the first k-pop fic I've written in four months!
So in 2008, the first year I'd actually been well-settled enough in k-fandom to want to write him something (I was clueless and terrified in 2007, okay?), Donghae's birthday fic was about his birth and his life before SJ. Then in 2009, Donghae's birthday fic was about him, now, at this present stage in his life, and all the people who love him.
This year... Well, I didn't actually intend to write this, considering how out of k-pop fandom I've been, but sometimes you can't control the ideas that slam into you with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer and demand you write them. (Or at least I can't. Maybe other people can fight off sledgehammers more easily!) So this year, 2010, the birthday fic is about death and moving on and the future. It's kind of fitting, isn't it? If his birthday fics are acting as an extended metaphor of my relationship with SJ fandom, I mean. If I were to go that pretentious route. /cough
The style in this piece is...not my usual. I can see influences of other fics I've read, the stylistic choices I've been intrigued by. It wasn't entirely a conscious chocie to write that way but I guess that is how I was feeling at the time.
An additional note: I am not entirely sure if Donghae's father was cremated or buried but doing that kind of "research" actually feels a bit strangely invasive to me (yes, more so than writing RPS where the people involved have sex, I don't know; mostly I've lost my moral compass in fandom, but occasionally I stumble across some skittering, roaming morals and pick them up and do the best I can and, anyway, there is no sex in this so leaveBritney me alone!), so we're going to go with a more general assumption. (I did, however, conduct research on Korean graves, let me tell you - it involved Google and asking my Korean friends, out of the blue, how graves worked in Korea. It is a good thing my friends have gotten accustomed enough to my random questions to answer them without probing too deeply into why I want to know. "To acquire knowledge of the world, of course." Last week I surveyed my guy friends at dinner on whether or not they owned cuff links. They all answered my question before it occured to them to pause and ask why I was curious. "Do you need cuff links, Mei?" they asked, longsuffering. "I would if I could," I did not tell them mournfully. "I would dress like Arthur every day." Instead I said, "NO I JUST LIKE MY MEN DRESSED NICE." See, e.g., my comment from the last post: "WEAR SUITS EVERY DAY.")
Er, but I digress...
This fic is KiHae, of course, because what other pairing so defined me while I was in this fandom? It's like every KiHae I've ever written, again. It is kind of like closure. To be honest, this fic is probably for me more than it is for anyone else.

IN OTHER NEWS, science has linked the following:
- earlier bedtimes with less depression
- teeth-brushing with fewer heart problems
- cell phone use with prevention of Alzheimer's
- preschool with prevention of childhood leukemia
- jacking off with prevention of prostate cancer (LMFAO)
Science has not yet linked JGL's ass with greater levels of happiness and health (and intesified sex drives, cough), nor have they linked Tom Hardy in my bed with curing all things everywhere (and also WORLD PEACE), but I am sure it is only a matter of time. SCIENCE, I BELIEVE IN YOU.
You know what I do not believe? That I am the only person on all of LJ with "jgl's ass" in my interests.
For shame! If I didn't love y'all, I wouldn't even point out my rec for the MOST AMAZING ROCK BAND AU INCEPTION TEAM FIC EVER. But I do. So go read the fic and flail, as I did.
And I will conclude with a poll because I am in need of material by which to judge the rest of you:
