I was looking through the big bang and it also occurred to me there weren't that many k/s fics! HOW COULD PEOPLE NOT SHIP THEM??

RIGHT?! It is shocking and unbelievable to me. SEE MY FACE OF :OOOO!!

IT MAKES MY SHIPPER HEART SAD. Oh, I meant to ask you, what didn't you like about Spoctoria? Or rather, what were your complicated feelings? I was entranced as I read through it but as I skimmed through it again afterward, I noticed Spock was a bit... ooc in some places?

Oh man, Spoctoria - I have been trying for days to pin down what about it makes it impossible for me to love wholeheartedly as one of my absolute favorites. I think part of it is that it spanned so much time so rapidly and I didn't really feel the build-up of how K/S fell in love? They just suddenly were, and then the rest of it was dealing with the complications of already being in a relationship. And I'm one of the people who's an absolute sucker for get-together fics and am a little iffier about established-relationship fics. So probably that and then I was a bit "is this necessary?" for how the "let's have a kid!" bit was tacked on at the end. It makes sense in-story, because monarchies require heirs, etc., but I felt a little resentful, like why is the heteronormative wedded-bliss-with-child-nuclear-family trope the ideal here? And probably a few little things along the way, but that's true of every fic. I don't know exactly!

Yes, I felt the progress of their relationship was rushed too. It made me feel as if it was a reincarnation fic because of the lack of development. I didn't mind the kid part because I'm a bit of a sucker for kid!fics (though this obviously wasn't one) and like you said, it made sense in fic. I can totally see where the resentment comes from though. Now that I think about it, another thing that threw me off about the fic was that I was actually expecting Spock to go out into space with the crew and fight crime and whatnot.

1) OH. OH YOU SHOULD WATCH THE STAR TREK 2009 MOVIE OH IT WAS SO ACTION-PACKED AND GLORIOUS. Seriously, I had no interest in ST previous to that movie and knew nothing about the series at all but walked out so happy and entertained by the new movie. :DDDD IT IS SO SHINY. ♥

2) Me toooo. Why is it not done and out yet? /whiny. I am so, so happy to see both boys in suits and Reese looking so, so lovely in basically all the pics.

1) I'm pretty sure I was originally dragged by friends and was not all that excited by the prospect because I knew nothing about ST haha. But it's a great standalone movie - I'm pretty sure I missed the little nuances and tributes to the original series, but it's still totally watchable! And everyone is hot. :D And once you get into fandom and start reading a lot of fic, you pick up on stuff. A+ (Plus the interviews the actors gave promoting the movie are aldskghsdjf hilarious and awesome. ♥)

I actually like reading Uhura/Spock, when it's from Uhura's pov and she's treated well by the author. and Uhura/Bones, which is I suppose a bit of a '...' in the spurned-best-friends-get-together way but I think it would work. but, well.

I reread So Wise We Grow recently and found it a bit dated, boo! Still love it but my opinions of spock and kirk have evolved and I find the premise of that fic a bit weird! Especially the treatment of Uhura which rubs me the wrong way!

There has been so much kirk/mccoy lately, it is bizarro. Like, gtfo, reading kirk/mccoy is like reading harry/ron which just, no.

Have you read Streetlight People??? That fic rocked my world hardcore!

Ahh I remember people having some discussions about Uhura's treatment - I guess I don't find it particularly negative because I think it was totally fair of her to not want to be mother to Spock's kid? Like, if I was dating someone and found out all of a sudden they had been ~engaged~ and ~had a kid~ even if they didn't know about it -- it would be a huge shock and I don't know if that's a relationship I could commit myself to? It can seem a bit kneejerk Uhura-is-the-bad-guy just because we have the contrary Kirk-swoops-in-to-save-the-day, so hmm... Anyway, I need to reread this fic and form better impressions! I wasn't as ~aware~ of certain things when I originally read the fic, blissfully ignorant, so it should be interesting to read it again now that my worldview has shifted a bit. :) (Though everyone's worldviews shift, given time, haha.)

I did read Streetlight People! It was delightful! Not quite ~the perfect fic~ for me (in terms of hitting all the right buttons for me) but a good read.

I think her decision is totally valid. I just didn't like the way she was a bit villainized for it. I realize there had to be the Spock/Uhura break-up bit to conveniently allow for some K/S action but yeah, it was a blah treatment of that trope for me. I also thought Kirk's sudden, yes, I'll be a father, was too convenient as well and highly OOC -- his acceptance of the situation and Uhura's rejection of it were not explained well enough for me. Storek was adorbs though, love him so much. I am pretty sure he's the reason I can't get enough kid!fic in this fandom XD

Ahh hm this is a good point - Kirk suddenly being okay with being a dad is a bit "...really?" And I guess I have to reread to see if the narrative was villainizing Uhura a bit, because while I can understand Spock's upset feelings over it (being biased and irrational as most feelings are!), Uhura's decision definitely shouldn't be portrayed objectively as unfair or evil or whatever.

But yessss I do remember adoring Storek. :D

I am that strange person who can ship K/S and K/M. (Although oddly, never K/S/M) Am I going to be shunned from trek fandom for my wishy-washy shipping stance?

In other news, OH MY OVARIES, he is play fighting with a kid. One day they will find me slumped over my computer and the cause of death will be Tom Hardy being too awesome for life.

My OTP stands as K/S. I'll only ever read McSpirk if it's an author I already really REALLY like. It's one of those complicated things. XD
