show me your fandom roots, your fandom heart!

I have left St Louis and returned safely to NC after a harrowing 14+ hour drive! I have moved all my shit back with m in preparation of Singapore for the spring semester. :D Party on, dudes. Last semester is going to be so much more about food and drinking and traveling and seeing people than it is about law. But I've totally earned this, right?

I then spent all of today unpacking, cleaning, throwing away, and organizing everything in my room, which has been more or less untouched since my family moved into this house a year ago (while I was away at school). Oh god the things I came across from my middle school days, lolol. Let's just say I've always been an obsessive fan, except back then I was an obsessive BSB fan who wrote the best Mary Sues ever. You'd be jealous. Eventually I moved on to HP (H/Hr to D/Hr to D/H, oh ♥) and animanga and kpop and now sort of full circle back to Western TV fandoms. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FANDOM JOURNEYS. Have no shame, it's okay. HP? Gundam Wing? Sailor Moon? Jpop? Power Rangers? (It's okay, my brother wrote Bionicle fanfic when he was 7.)

Cleaning also made me go hearteyes over all of my manga (I own a ridiculous number of manga, you don't want to know how much) and Tenimyu and Macdonald Hall and-- I HAVE MANY FANDOMS, OKAY. They all have space in my heart.

One thing that's been constant, though, is that I've always been a Disney girl. Fairy tales, I love them dark and Grimm, but I love the happily-ever-afters of Disney too, not even gonna lie. I AM TWELVE-YEAR-OLD PRETTY PRETTY PRINCESS INSIDE. :D (No seriously, I have so many thoughts and feelings about fairy tales but basically they can all be summed up with I LOVE THEM and have read wayyy too many of them. Lang's Insert-Color-Here Fairy Books are some of my favorite.)

So of course I love, loved, this video. ♥

In other good news: Delicious probably saved! Senate repealed DADT, fuck yeah! So many new H50 fics for me to read! I have chocolate! TOM HARDY EXISTS XX

[identity profile] celerywench.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
AWWWWWWWWWWW ♥ I love that video/song/disney-princess-movies.

But dude I hate Sleeping Beauty D; like her only claim to fame and happily ever after is FALLING ASLEEP. WUT.

I used to think Eric was the end all be all of Princes but it's totally Prince Adam/Beast. Hubba hubba French, literate, hunk.

Oh also FANDOM JOURNEY! I think I started out with Digimon (where I discovered sex!...) and then X-Men (lol omg my mary sues), and then HP - where I went from DM/HG to SB/RL to HP/DM and then around and around. I think that sums up fandom up to college...when I began getting into J-pop and K-pop, but never lost my HP way, just expanded it to all Western fandoms. J2 and SGA and GEN KILL ♥...

hahaha you are predictable. I never really thought about which prince I liked - a lot of them didn't have much personality, like, uh, Cinderella's Prince Charming lol. But I like Eric! And Aladdin, I think. IDK IDK.

Oh mannn Digimon, I still love seasons 1&2. TAI. MATT. True love, idec, I would still read fic for them.

Yeah, HP is always in the bg ready for reading if we get bored or run out of fic in other fandoms. Speaking of which, [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays is going on right now and I need to find some time to read it!

Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] celerywench.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL Okay so here is my (halfbaked) theory of why Prince Adam is the hipster prince.
1)He starts off as a total rich stuck up douche incidentally played by Mary Kate Olsen...like I need to explain what's hipster about this?
2)He has an obscene amount of facial hair
3)When he emos (which happens a lot) he stares at a rose(really of all things) and reads books and philosophizes on the sad plight of his life
4)One of his most important possessions is a MIRROR (and we all know how vain those hipsters are)
5)He falls in love with a girl who loves books and is pretty freak'n hipster herself (in the out of the mainstream of the town sort of way)
6)He surrounds himself with a strange assortment of characters who dress funny (okay technically they are this servants who are pots and pans but work with me here!)
7)He has long hair and broods and generally comes off as pretentious and secluded/reserved/introverted
8)He's a jackass because he's shy (or something...*hums Something There*)

I'm just saying, if the town is Manhattan, than his castle is totally Brooklyn.

So yes. PRINCE ADAM IS A HIPSTER. LOL.

OOOOOOOOh *clicks link* yay ♥. Oh Maaaaatt ♥. So emo ♥. I can't believe he married SORA. What the eff was that about?!

Re: Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA ILU hahaha facial hair - only as the Beast though! He's clean-shaven when he magically transforms back. And hahahaha about the rest of it. Write a modern day AU take on this fairy tale. Though I'm sure it already exists!!

UGH THE ENDING WAS A LIE. Tai/Matt foreverrr.

Re: Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] celerywench.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Dude don't tempt me lmao. Ever since my friends moved to Brooklyn I know waaaaay too much about the mating rituals of hipsters and I swear it actually half follows the plot of Beauty/Beast. As for the facial hair - I know plenty of guys who have longish hair and LOTS of facial hair and scruff - and I give them the sideeye of ew in class (though partially this side eye is because, seriously stop fucking quoting Kierkegaard and Derrida) - but then they shave and HOT DAMN THEY'RE YUMMY.

LOL ILU. Just like how the epilogue lied right? Speaking of which! Reading H/D made me randomly think of songs for a fanmix xP Because this one fic reminded me of Kiss with a Fist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SmxVCM39j4) ♥

Re: Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Epilogue? WHAT epilogue? H/D forever. :D Let me know if you read anything particularly good! Going to go through H50 fic tonight and maybe start poking around at HD hols tomorrow.

Re: Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] celerywench.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well this one (http://community.livejournal.com/hd_holidays/168935.html) is pretty good in that achey sort of way. I think the author captures the spirit of their relationship especially well - the back and forth, love hate, draco being a drama queen, harry being stubborn, etc.

I attempted another fic - it was cute and seemingly well written - but it was so very ooc with the h/d I have in my head that I barely got a quarter ways before I got =\ at it.

Re: Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Does it have a happy ending though? I can only take angst and ache these days when I know there's a happy payoff. ;__;

Re: Prince Adam is a Hipster

[identity profile] celerywench.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes yes happy ending! lol I totally know what you mean. I hate when fics leave me feeling incomplete. Randomly I really want snarky domestic schmoop...

I wonder if anybody has a reputable rec list for hp-hols up this year yet. Going through them is such a hassle ;-;

[identity profile] emeraldcrystal.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
asdfklj that video! ♥ Somehow I've watched all the Disney movies but never more than once or twice because we don't own them... Now I'm curious as to how I watched them at all. xD

Hahaha, fandom journey. This is going to be long. I think my first fandoms were Digimon, Cardcaptors, and Dragonball Z. This was when I first discovered the internet so I had visited a lot of forums for fic, and finally found ff.net. And then it was Harry Potter in which I spent about a year or two dallying in the likes of H/Hr, DM/GW, and JP/LP. Since that time, I've never really gotten back into Harry Potter so my pairings haven't really changed... except that I mostly only read RW/DM fics now. I have no idea how that happened. Anyhow, next was Inuyasha. I spent.. a year there, I think, reading all the Inu/Kagome fics there were. AND THEN I discovered the joys of yaoi. I read in a bunch of small fandoms (HxH, PoT) and then found the bigger fandoms (YGO, Naruto, YYH). (and dled a bunch of yaoi manga) This was the point in my life I actually followed Naruto and loved it for real. This was all in the span of almost 6 years I think, from grade 7 to the end of high school.

And then in college I discovered K-pop. And from then on, I went onto Western fandoms. I think it was Supernatural first, because I saw you recommending it? Or just the fics, I'm not quite sure. And then House, SGA, Merlin, GenKill... Ahaha, this was long wasn't it? I'm sorry! It got away from me.

Yes! Delicious is saved? Sweet. And DADT repealed! Good news all around. :D

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I love hearing about other people's fandom journeys - see where we intersected or just missed each other. :D I couldn't go into detail about my animanga experience though - I basically poked around at everything for a bit, haha. But omg yaoi manga, MY NOSTALGIA. I want to go reread a bunch of my favorites and see if they hold up over time, now that I am more, er, aware of how problematic some of the tropes are. I could still make a list of my favorite BL manga-ka off the top of my head though. :D

I genuinely enjoyed Naruto for a brief period too! And then the timeskip and assbow happened, and then I stopped caring. :( SasuNaru, farewell.

hehe Western fandoms have been fun. One benefit is the large fandoms and thus LOTS OF FIC.

[identity profile] reddwarfer.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I HAVE AN UNNATURAL LOVE FOR DISNEY PRINCESSES! Also, I have this intensive love of Sleeping Beauty. I have like thirty dolls, eighteen globes and various other memorabilia. I should own stock, it's ridiculous.

My fandom journey: hp to tenipuri to fma to various other manga fandoms to silent hill to minekura everything ever to sga. I also dance back and forth. I'm one of this miserable otp bastards. There's also knights of the old republic, red dwarf, mass effect, H50 against my will, and other things. I cannot be content with one fandom ever.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
One of my closest friends loves Sleeping Beauty too. It's such a classic. :D I don't know what my favorite Disney Princess movie is, though. I love them all. Did you see Tangled? SO CUTE, though not as ~classic~ as ye princesses of olde, of course. My nostalgia, let me show you it, haha.

Explain to me what being a miserable OTP bastard means. D:

And also why H50 against your will!!! D:

But ia, I love having more than one fandom. More to love! More to read!

[identity profile] reddwarfer.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to like one or two ships and pretty hardcore at that. When everyone tends to treat certain characters like the little black dress, I kinda scrunch my nose and become even more dedicated to my otp. like Zukafuji forever...what is this tezuryo/tezuato/tezuoshi/tezuinui bullshit? Omg never! zukafuji or die! D: D: D: Or something like that, only internally.

I like H50 but everyone wants to ship Steven/Danny. I don't want to. (I sort do anyhow, but it is totally against my will. I resolutely decide that it's really Steve-->Danny one-sided unrequited forever.) I basically came into fandom, arms-crossed, frown on my face, refusing to ship another two white guys again.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh I know what that's like. Multishipping is good and fine foor many people (and even for me, in certain fandom with certain characters), but yeah. I OTP pretty hardcore and make T____T and >:( faces when my OTP gets split up. So I try to stay in my little corner of OTP bliss.

Also, lol, I totally admire trying to not ship Steve/Danny considering how much the show ships it. I know White Cock is sort of a thing and I totally get how it's reflective of some problems in fandom but on a personal level, I guess I care less about what my shipping tendencies are supposedly saying than I am about finding a dynamic I like. Idk, maybe it is horribly selfish? It's cool though - I ship what I ship and other people ship what they ship and we all have our own reasons and I just hope everyone's having a good time because that's what fandom is about for me. :D

Though I've read good Steve/Chin and Danny/Chin and though I haven't read it, I could totally support Danny/Kono (I cheered when they got to make out as a distraction tactic). ALSO, I LOVE RACHEL. /my thoughts on H50, LET ME NOT SHUT UP ABOUT THEM

hahah oh Geocities, I read so much fic on it way back when. And I wrote and posted so much BSB fic on Geocities, now forever lost, except for what crap I managed to back up for posterity. ;)

never saw a single episode of the show. I just read a metric fuckton of 1x2 fic.

HI FRIEND, STORY OF MY LIFE. And yet my love for GW remains undiminished. :D I still reread Drums of Heaven on an annual basis and go *__________* over how much I fucking love 1x2. And the other pilots and Relena too, but 1x2 for life, man.

Nothing like a journey into the past to remind us how old we are. /o\ But they were good years, good years.

hehe I like yours too. Exclamation points are exciting!

I don't think I've read that fic, I should go find it. The Drums of Heaven (http://gwaddiction.com/p.php?title=The+Drums+Of+Heaven&author=Sol+1056&to=&series=&part=&last=&authorpage=Sol.shtml&fic=./sol/drums) is outrageously good, oh god. It's post-series too but deals with plotty mission stuff, relationship estrangement (and slowly reforming bonds/closeness), and character development and alskgdhdjf. Have you read Axiomatic at least? :D /names off some top favorite 1x2 fics

ahhhh well if we're not limiting fandom to just online fannishness, then —

Flame of Recca/Rurouni Kenshin/POKEMON/Vandread --> Harry Potter --> LOTR --> PoT --> Crazy Mish-Mash of Anime/Book Fandoms --> JE (oh lol) --> Fandom Polyamory (GK, Merlin, Narnia being the bigger blips on the map)

but basically it's being polyamorous with Middle-Earth as my One True Fandom now. :)))

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
oddly enough, I've never written anything longer than a forced drabble for ME. it's just so terrifying; I read fic (strictly canonical) (BOOK canonical) but would never countenance my actual writing of fic. it would be some sort of sacrilege.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
haha I squinted at ME and was like "medical examiner"? but yes, I think everyone has those few fandoms where they could never write for it (and some where you don't even want to read fic for it).
ext_9946: (Default)

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHA yes. oh oh oh the other day I learned from my dad that medics are HOs (House Officers? Housemen? I forget) before they become MOs (Medical Officers) and then SMOs ... it amused me a lot.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
what are SMOs... I can only think of CMOs (chief medical officers) because of STXI...

I OWN A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF MANGA TOO. I posted pics of my room not too long ago (that shows some of my collection), but maybe you own more. XD

My fandom journey is kinda hard to map since I've been into like a million fandoms, but I'm gonna attempt to go through the big ones: I'm pretty sure it began with Sailor Moon, and going into Pokemon and Digimon. Jpop was next, with a brief dip into kpop (the disbandment of H.O.T. took me away lol). Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Fruits Basket and soooo many other anime/manga series were next. Tenipuri! I have to mention that. Then I somehow veered into Western tv fandoms (Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice, etc). Of course there was Avatar: TLA. And now I've gotten back into kpop, mainly with Super Junior, but I like alot of other groups. BUT SJ-M IS LIKE MY BABY. Love that group of dorks to pieces.

OH MAN, THAT WAS REALLY LONG.

Wait--I forgot to mention Power Rangers! That was probably before Sailor Moon. XD

HAHA OH MY GOD I JUST WENT TO LOOK AT YOUR PICS AND-- That is a lot of manga! I thought I had a lot but it's really about half of your collection? I stopped buying manga a few years ago though and started investing in scanlations, onemanga.com, and an external HD. ;) Though the shallow part of me adores how pretty and shiny the real thing is, with nice binding and all lined up in a row~

Ooh you have really circled around a lot in your fandom journey! Or at least with kpop, I guess. I love how we both moved from animanga to jpop back to animanga and then kpop and Western TV. :D I ALSO LOVE THE SJM LOVE. ♥♥ I am actually so excited for their comeback in Jan or so and I don't even pay attention to kpop anymore.

Though the shallow part of me adores how pretty and shiny the real thing is, with nice binding and all lined up in a row~

I know exactly what you mean! Seeing books all lined up makes me go *_____*
I'll d/l scanlations too, but there's nothing like curling up on your bed with the real thing. Plus, I tend to curl up in the fetal position and its kinda awkward to hold my laptop like that. XD

Kpop is the fandom you can never quite get away from. Like the Tezuka Zone, it sucked me back in.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh your icon. Oh it won't be the same without Geng. ;____;

I have mastered the art of lying about with my laptop - helps that it's a netbook and tiny/portable though, heh.

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Aahah, my first fandom was actually Evangelion. I was a peculiar child. Then the usual routes Sailor Moon > Gundam Wing > HP > idk. It was a long time ago! XD;

I used to write letters to imaginary people. They are always amusing to read.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
:O Eva was really big in those early days! Before GW even. I always remembered it as the big classic anime I never got into/just missed, haha. But GW = ♥

ahaha did you ever have them write back?

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well yes, that was around 2000-2001 (though some of Eva aired here around 1997, and I got intrigued despite being in single digits at the time and later it lead to an epic search for the rest of the series. My obsessiveness started young! XD), which was around the time that GW started airing in the US. I obviously missed out on that. I actually got into GW before I had even seen the series. Then it was kind of interesting to see how fanon stereotypes clashed with canon. I was like, "wait, Heero and Trowa actually talk? wth fandom wth." It does~

I think so? It was more like I would take on the character of someone else and write in their character. Then there was the time I had a notebook filled with a made up family tree. Starting from the middle ages. They had a lot of kids. By the time I reached the 18th C it was nearly full ^^;

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha oh the strange fanon concepts I gathered from reading GW fic - so many fics set in safehouses or at school, I honestly thought they were a much bigger part of canon. Apparently not. Nowadays I much prefer them older than 15 anyway, though granted I haven't been reading too much new GW fic. Just rereading the favorite epics.

[identity profile] jibrailis.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Mei, you have totally earned partying and relaxing and eating good food in Singapore. And I am so happy that you got home safely!

My fandom journey started with Gundam Wing, did a brief dip in Harry Potter, and then watched quietly in a bunch of small book fandoms like Sherlock Holmes and Bruno & Boots for years and years, until Inception came along!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Gundam Wing! ♥ Also, speaking of book!Sherlock Holmes, I was reading this fic (http://tweedisgood.livejournal.com/126413.html) today and it made me weepy. Have you read it before?

Books. :D :D :D /reads a lot over break

I am so bookmarking that video

[identity profile] danii06.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Also, brb, downloading all the Disney princess movies, except for Little Mermaid because I already have a DVD of it (Ariel is my absolute favorite).

Fandom journey? The first fandom I ever wrote for was Slam Dunk, but I was reading GW and Yu Yu Hakusho fics way before. I lurked in the FF7 fandom and wrote a couple of fics, but never participated more than that (also stayed far away from the Aerith vs Tifa debate). Wrote for PoT and met you lovelies.<3 Did not write for two years, then sprung out some fic for KHR and The World Ends With You. Watched the Korean BoF, had a love/hate relationship with it, re-read the Hana Yori Dango manga, and eventually wrote two fics for it. I still have my FF.net account, haha.

That's it so far. I mostly lurk these days. I read GEN STXI, Inception, and HP fics still though, if they're recommended highly enough :)

Re: I am so bookmarking that video

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This video made me want to go rewatch all the Disney princess movies again too. :D Such fond memories, man.

Eee and then you mentioned Slam Dunk and now I'm tempted to reread that over break, to. All I want to do over break is eat and read and watch stuff I love. I will never understand people who don't read...

I found that while I still read voraciously for a number of fandoms, I am much happier lurking (and then flailing w/ people I already know who happen to share an interest in the fandom). Meeting new people/interacting is just tiring, at this point. D: /old

[identity profile] papered.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
aww, the video. :3 the song is pretty. although I must say, I am seriously one of the most ignorant people ever when it comes to disney-related things, omg hahahaha. I seriously have so few memories of actually watching the ~classic~ disney princess things (I don't even know if I forgot what I watched, or if I just never watched them, but I suspect the latter?????) and when people find out they are always all HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE, dead. MY CHILDHOOD WAS OCCUPIED BY.... OTHER THINGS, APPARENTLY, IDEK.

although only a few of these were actual ~fandoms~, and plus the arrows aren't quite correct because some of these fandoms, I still hang onto, but I went Harry Potter -> Supernatural (The 4400, Gossip Girl, Heroes, Psych, etc) -> Twilight (yes, really. this was before it got really well-known and I more or less conveniently never mention anymore that I used to be in the fandom hahahaha :333) -> CLAMP! my !ing was mainly divided into tsubasa/ccs and tokyo babylon/x -> Doctor Who -> kpop -> Merlin -> Inception -> and now I am reading tons of star trek fics. with some asian dramas thrown in randomly along the way. :3

(THAT WAS LONGER THAN I EXPECTED.)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-12-21 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
...HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE, LIZ. /JUDGES YOUR CHILDHOOD AND YOU AND ALSO YOUR AGE >:((((

did I know you were into CLAMP? I must've known. We did flail over Tsubasa together! I like that everyone is trying to detail every fandom they went through and I'm just like /handwaves /lumps all animanga and Western TV fandoms in one big clump, lol.
