can you live like this?
I have arrived in Singapore! Thanks for all the well-wishing in the previous post; y'all are the best. Things I have done so far:
1. observed from a distance SkyPark (a giant boat on top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel)
2. flitted around town in a skirt
3. met
forochel in person at laaaaaast ♥ and made her eat my hummus (no, not a euphemism; quite literal)
4. bought a cell phone
5. texted
thundersquall with plans to meet next week ♥
6. registered in person with NUS (only to discover to finish the process, I need a medical exam, so tomorrow, "hello doctor! please tell me I'm not dying of cancer")
7. electrocuted myself with the outlet
8. had dinner (tapas) at Clark Quay
9. been exposed, already, to people who actually and truly love durian (ew WTF)
Adventures shall continue, and my lurking on LJ will get presumably worse. Singapore red tape continues to strangle me slowly. I've also realized that I am probably the worst international student ever. :( I don't really care about meeting other international students and going to organized international student events (I may change my tune later about the former, who knows? they might be very cool) - I am much more interested in getting to know the locals and hanging around in the less touristy and expensive places in town. I want lots and lots of food! Preferably, cheap food! Also shoes. And coffee. Surely I can find someone (local or international student) who is willing to explore Singapore with me beyond the drinking and the clubs. (I do miss clubbing. But not that much. I have recently come to the conclusion that I have no art and no glamour in my soul. And damn it, spellcheck, I don't care what you say, it's "glamour" not "glamor". Your word doesn't count, you don't even think "spellcheck" is a word.)

You do have an umbrella? It rains a lot at this time of the year.

I do have umbrella, indeed. Forecast calls for rainy day after rainy day...

I am sure your hummus was excellent, Mei. The best hummus of them all!

It was all right hummus. Not the most exciting I've ever had. :( But it came with pita bread and ground lamb!

durians!! it seems people who love durians *love* them, ENJOY INVIGORATING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THEM, ATTEMPT TO CONVERT OTHERS AROUND THEM TO THE JOY OF THE DURIAN. IT'S LIKE FRUIT SCIENTOLOGY.
it sounds like you are having an amazing time. <3 please continue. AND WHATEVER, GLAMOUR AND ART, YOU HAVE ALL OF IT THERE IS IN THE WORLD. <3

I've sent you an LJ message with my number, btw! And I shall be in NUS tomorrow and free after 2:30 so if your medical exam is over by then, I'll be glad to have lunch or something if you don't already have Plans! Just text me or something.
What lies, you're the best international student ever. I think the cool ones are the ones who actually, you know, hang out with us boring locals. At least those are the ones I've met. >.> And if anybody from overseas will let me I'd love to bring them to see the heartlands - it disturbs me that in all our official tourist collateral there isn't a single real heartlander scene in them, what is this.

Over time I have reached the conclusion that durian is less a fruit of the mouth and more a fruit of the heart, an opinion which has absolutely no basis in science or observation but seems to make sense when I don't think about it very hard...

i left you a comment on your previous entry with a list of places that you could go to, and if you want more cheap food, check out any coffeeshop in the heartland (residential) areas! the food should be pretty passable. try chicken rice, laksa, nasi lemak, roti prata, mee soto, mee siam, fishball noodles, char kway teow, char tao kuay, nasi padang,.... they should all be very easy to find :D don't stick around in bukit timah, there's nothing much there! go to the east, marine parade especially, there's a shopping mall there called parkway parade where you can get good food at the foodcourt (for $4!), have ya kun kaya toast, and then walk over to the beach (east coast park) :D
also, if you have time, go to changi village. it's a long ride down since it's in the far east of singapore, but it's totally worth it :)
have funnnnn and i'm glad to hear you arrived safely! if you want more places to explore, just ask me anytime, i am a great roamer of singapore XD
