it's funny how you always want to spend money when you don't have any

Things I am enjoying:
I got caught up on Yotsuba&! and it is full of delight. There's just something about how straightforward and simple that manga is, the day-to-day adventures of a strange five-year-old discovering the world. There was a recent chapter about ordering pizza and getting it delivered - and that was it, but it was great. It made me hungry.

I started watching random episodes of Running Man, which is a hysterically funny Korean variety show. Wiki gives a brief synopsis of it, but it sounds much weirder and more boring than the actual show is. Of course I started watching it after hearing the hype and because there were idols I was interested in guesting in a few episodes; from there on, though, you really start appreciating the main cast, too. But the guesting idols are still hilarious - Yoona & Sunny! Nichkhun & Taecyeon! Yunho & Changmin! Yonghwa! Daesung! Jessica! Heechul! Siwon. Oh Siwon, I always want to punch you in the face, even when you are hilarious.

Things I am excited about:
Warrior comes out this Friday! It's getting a lot of good reviews, which makes me happy. :D T-HARD, T-HARD!! I haven't been to the movies forever (aside from HP, it's probably been close to a year) and I really want to see it in theaters, but I don't think I have anyone to go with me. All my guy friends into MMA are halfway across the country, and all my girl friends into Tom Hardy are at minimum five hours away from me. Sad.

Not sad: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy coming out this year! This Means War next year! Gary Oldman's epic romance with Tom Hardy! Such good things.

New Discworld book out in October! It's about Vimes. It's going to be a satire of the English mystery genre! I am filled with such gleeful anticipation. :D :D :D

Things I am thinking about:
I am thinking seriously of getting an e-reader because I'm sick of staring at my computer screen all the time. I want to read books! Fic! Manga! All conveniently in one place, without straining my eyes all the time. I have been particularly swayed of late after discovering that all of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books are out of copyright and freely available. Omg.

Yotsuba& is such a great series. I feel happy whenever I read it.

I have a Kindle and I love it! I've been powering through a lot of Classics because they are free on Amazon.

What are these Fairy books? They're free somewhere?

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I am seriously considering getting a Nook! I love the idea of being able to read not just books but also fic and manga on them. :D

Yeeees, these Fairy books (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Lang's_Fairy_Books) are all free for DL on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/The-Blue-Fairy-Book-ebook/dp/B000JQUM1C) and elsewhere! I'm a total sucker for fairy tales (the older and grimmer, the better) and derivative fiction based off them.

[identity profile] kiku-cha8-8.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the link! I need all of these immediately ;; I love fairy tales.

[identity profile] konnistique.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, manga? on an e-reader? that works? :O MOAR INFO PLZ.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have an e-reader yet! I have to figure it out! But I have heard multiple reports of being able to read manga on e-readers because, you know, they're just gif/jpg/pngs and therefore readable on most (if not all?) the current e-readers.

[identity profile] konnistique.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not too knowledgeable in that area either. I know that's why I wanted an ipad--to read fics. But manga would mean putting all the images onto the device... not that it guarantees it'll appear properly? (as in, you don't have to zoom in to read the word etc etc).

I have a Nook and it is awesome. Much more convenient for curling up in the fetal position on my bed that a real book lol. (If you do get an ereader and I can totally give recs for ebook comms here on lj!)

And Running Man! I love that show so much. Most of the guests are really awesome on the show (have you seen the episode with Hyun Joong? one of my fave episodes lol), except for the older actors who try to win by using their seniority (so to speak). I started putting together a primer about RM, but I keep on procrastinating. Whoops. /kicks self to get back on track

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been bandying the idea of getting an e-reader around for a while, but have lately done more serious research into it and, yeah, really liking the Nook.

Running Man is SO funny. I haven't seen the episode with Hyun Joong! I've mostly been skipping around at random rather than watching in order, but I'm sure I'll get to all of them eventually. (I tend to like the younger guests better too, I think, but that might just be because I actually know who they are!)

Also, eee, icon!

I strongly encourage you to watch the Seungri episode! In my opinion it was the most hilarious episode so far. :D

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thanks for the rec! I was going to get to it eventually but now I'll move it up my queue. :D

I had pizza today! and pasta! and banana chocolate frappe! I had delicious food!

A Watch novel, yay! :DD

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Delicious food is good! I always recommend eating delicious food over...non-delicious food... Heh.

Yes, the Watch novels are my favorites!

here is another factor when deciding: the new nook has a touch screen making it waaaaay easier to navigate. also no dedicated keyboard. it's also super cute and easier to fit in a bag i think. the kindle doesn't have a touchscreen and has the huge keyboard.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-08 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I know :3 I'm leaning towards Nook Simple Touch right now, but ability to handle PDFs/potential manga-reading is also a factor - the one I'm looking into right now. Also, Kindles are so unfriendly, not taking epubs and only allowing their special Amazon format. :((

!!!

I totally want to see this film too. But I won't be going tomorrow night, since my sensei contacted me and I'm going back to training again. It'll be awesome, especially since we're training out of a judo school now, which means grappling training on top of the striking training.

Afterward, though, I will want to see it. Want to see how well they capture MMA.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-09 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Heyyy, training, awesome! Good luck with that!

I actually don't know if I can see it tonight either, because I have crap to do (less exciting than training). One of my friends into the MMA says almost all MMA movies tend to be crap, but on the other hand this movie's gotten good reviews, so he's torn, haha. I'm like, just go see it and decide for yourself!

Every time he tweets I'm like = = are you serious? He's like a caricature of himself now, but it's still so funny, SO GREAT. (I particularly love KyuHae mocking him forever.)

I'm thinking about the Nook Simple Touch! It's gotten great reviews, I like that it's touchscreen, and the fact that it takes epubs and pdfs, which are the more common ebook formats. You can also check out ebooks from your library! Kindle is good in a lot of ways but it only takes its special Kindle format (and pdfs) - which is still workable, but would involve a lot more converting if you wanted to put fic or other ebooks on it. :/ Why so unfriendly??

I've done so much research this week, lol, I could talk forever. I have fandom specific uses in mind, you know? Fic and manga reading ability is important to me, along with the books!

I stole my mum's e-reader for about 6 months and it was glorious (even if the formatting on it sometimes left a lot to be desired).

Just make sure whatever you get has a search function. A friend has one without a search option and trying to find a specific book (especially once you've loaded your entire collection onto the reader) can take a ridiculously long time.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-09 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh that is something handy to keep in mind; I will double-check on the e-reader I'm looking into. :D I hear they don't give folder support, which distresses me, but a search function is a necessity!

[identity profile] erisinia.livejournal.com 2011-09-12 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, poor Siwon. XD

He used to grate on me when I thought he was 'Prince Siwon the gentleman(TM)', but now that I know that he is a clingy, petty, expressive dork I love him. The former seems fakey and put-on to me, but the latter is much more loveable. ^.^ I really loved that Running Man episode where they addeded little *swish* *tink* *ahha!* sound effects to all of his big Italian gestures. That there is a triumph of editing.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
When he was just the charming prince, he was totally boring to me. His devious personality came out in SJM though and I totally love him for the endless entertainment he provides, heh. I'm just the kind of person who expresses her affection through mocking, I guess! (Kyu gets it too.) And sometimes, honestly, he really does deserve a figurative punch to the face, god. He is just so...Siwon. Ugh.
