evidently hockey teams & the military really enjoy fratboy-esque nicknames

So Hockey RPF is apparently the new fandom on the rise (aside from Teen Wolf, of course, which I'm still sorely tempted to write for) because I just found out 3 people aside from myself who have independently been reading it in the past week. Maybe there's something in the water? (Despite the great distances that separate most of us...)

I started off with a high school AU, so it was basically like reading original fiction. It was great. My favorite is the Andrew Ladd/Ryan Kesler college AU sequel though. :D COLLEGE AUS, I WANT ALL OF THEM. I now know random things about random hockey players, mostly from the Chicago Blackhawks. This may be in no way useful to my life, but you never know. One day I'm going to go on Jeopardy and win through the sheer amount of random knowledge I've accumulated from reading fic in so many fandoms.

Speaking of picking shit up through fic, I've also reading Gen Kill fic and slowly watching the show. Learnin' 'bout the Marines, yes sir! And the fuckery that is command, apparently. The nice thing about getting into GK four years later is that there is so much good fic to read. This fandom may be small but it is goddamn high quality.

My Pinboard is a delightful mess lately. I still miss tag bundles because I wish I could figure out just how many fandoms I've got tagged. Over 60, I know for sure. Did I mention my brief and largely inexplicable foray into Kakashi/Sakura? Yeah, things happen sometimes and then my Pinboard is like, whoa, what?

And for anyone who didn't see it already, a fabulous article on T-HARD: Here lies a great man...and he's still lying. I freaking love him. I'm going to watch This Means War on Saturday, possibly drunkenly, and it will be great.

OH KENDRA, GK IS SO GOOD. SO GOOD.

And yet it depresses me at the same time. D:

I...clicked on that link and now am not sure I will ever be able to watch the rest of GK without thinking of drunken half-naked ASkars, lmao. It's like RL fratboy AU, honestly.

ahaha but it's so great. :D I'm halfway through and will try to finish up soon but askldjskl rl has gotten suddenly very busy.

I can see why people ship Brad/Ray but I am firmly in the Brad/Nate camp. It helps that they have so much good fic...

Team Canada!

I mean, skating fandom was big, right, so it shouldn't be surprising hockey has a fandom too. I think I remember seeing some Olympics gymnastics fic too...

[identity profile] intomorning.livejournal.com 2012-02-29 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
That would be an awesome way to win Jeopardy! 8) All I know about hockey is... Alex Ovechkin, and even that extends to just about his name.

Lol, your GK tags! Marines make do.

They do! Ugh, good show, great fics, but still depressing topic that gets me thinking too much sometimes. So for now I will go watch the new Big Bang MV! Bad Boy is out! And it's mellow and catchy and lovely~

I am really, really tempted. I have some ideas in my head! We'll see if I manage to write any of them down...

[identity profile] acornmama.livejournal.com 2012-02-29 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the time I could care less about other fandoms, but hockey? that seems intriguing.

No Big Bang review?

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-02-29 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Their video came uot right after I posted, so I didn't think I should make a new separate post so soon! BASICALLY IT MAKES ME HAPPY. ♥ They tend to, but I'm really digging the new sound from them this time around. Surprisingly mellow, compared to before, but still really catchy. We finally got the crazy ass hair and outfits from the filming fancams! But muted, which was probably a wise choice, lol. It's cool to see such a familiar background, and they do a good job of not looking like they're freezing to death.

[identity profile] acornmama.livejournal.com 2012-02-29 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems a more mature sound, if that makes sense. A little like all the interviews where they say they took a lot of time to reflect on themselves is actually true and this is the music that came from that.

I have heard the whole album and while it is still them it is definitely different.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
They really have matured a lot! Comparing this stuff to their debut album stuff - or even to their early hits like Lie and Always... They're always so interesting to listen to musically though!

the hockey thing truly makes me laugh. it is the randomest fandom to ever random & I blame thefourthvine for it ): she's just such a good reccer, though! and I can't believe I have ACTUAL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS about this, but human empanada read as some kind of original fic to me, because the characterisations didn't ring true? and I read that goddamn primer thefourthvine linked, so I know what I'm talking about. ... ): ): ))):

ALSO I SEE YOU'VE READ THE BIG GAY UNIVERSE SERIES :D :D :D

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god I have so many feelings about that fic too! Even though I didn't read any primers and still have no idea what they're like in reality (though I did give in and Google pics/wiki haha) so while Human Empanada read like original fic to me too, the dynamics were all wrong for me and I didn't actually enjoy them getting togerher because Iwas like NO FUCK YOU. FUCK ALL OF YOU.

I figured it out though! Kaner/Tazer reminds me of Kon/Tim (loud and stupid vs uptight and bitchy), except just a little off, with more antagonism than affection AND THAT REALLY BUGS ME. ;__; alskdf Kaner/Tazer seems to be the most popular pairing though. Gonna go read other pairings...

THE COLLEGE AU LADD/KESLER IS STILL MY FAVORITE.

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
that's the thing though! the dynamic between them didn't ring true to me at all because of all the antagonism written into it! I was like, BUT NO THEY LIKE EACH OTHER A LOT AND ARE STUPIDLY AFFECTIONATE IN THAT STUPID HOCKEY PLAYER WAY, WHY ARE YOU WRITING THEM LIKE THIS T_________T but then I was also about a third in by that point, so yes. I think that there was way more going on in an undercurrenty fashion in Human Empanada though, which I kind of appreciated the author's craft for, though it was also kind of painful. :/

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I got annoyed because there was so much emotional whiplash going on. Like, one second they like each other! And the next second they are doing and saying horrible things to each other that would legitimately hurt or make someone angry - AND THEN THE RIGHT PEOPLE DON'T APOLOGIZE FOR THEIR DICKISHNESS. Instead they suddenly like each other/have sex without anything being resolved or discussed! Or they apologize for something totally irrelevant!

ANYWAY UGH. So yeah, I really liked the premise, but the emotional dynamic bit made me ;___; because it was not my thing. So! Other pairings to try out! Or...Brad/Nate. :D Which are your favorites?

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, there was that as well. I don't know, I kind of enjoyed the emotional retardation, as ... you may have noticed. and, yeah, the random sex was really weird but at the same time I thought it worked in a literary way? idk, I thought it just showed how stupid and emotionally stunted they were, and I got the impression that Tazer liked Kaner more than he let on at first. and to me, the apologising for irrelevant things was — deliberate? they'd apologise for irrelevant things because they wouldn't apologise for the relevant ones, which is significant in itself. ...tl;dr michelle should really have applied for a degree in english instead.

ARRANGED MARRIAGE AUS THOUGH. ALWAYS SO GREAT!!

oh man b/n is so ... I really liked it! but then I got bored of it. MY FAVOURITE IS RAYRAY. AND WALT. I really like [livejournal.com profile] bysine's astronaut au, though, and [livejournal.com profile] godofwine wrote a really amazing fic back at the beginning.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
It probably fit the story/characters but I think part of me will always be annoyed at people who choose to have drama instead of talking through their issues because it's a sign their relationship will probably not succeed for very much longer...or not healthily, at any rate. But idk! It's fiction! And i like a lot of stupid convoluted tropes and miscommunication in my fiction, so idk why exactly that fic felt off to me aside from the lack of affection, I guess.

Arranged marriage AUs and pretend boyfriend AUs, yesss.

RayRay is so great! :D I'm still in my honeymooning B/N phase, shh. But they're also too military/tough-guy to pine the way I am craving right now, lol.

loooool read the one where nate is a senator and brad is a reporter! it is a good one.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-03-03 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read that already, lol. It's one of my favorites. :D

[identity profile] osoreranai.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! If you want to learn you a thing or two about the marines, just go ahead and make your brother be one. You will have a more in depth perspective than any TV can give you. Guarantee.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
ha, I think that's one career path my brother's not likely to pursue. GK is pretty interesting and eye-opening though! Based off a book written by a reporter who was embedded in one of the platoons, so he was pretty much in the action with them for some time. Slightly more realistic than most TV, I'd wager (though not saying much, since most TV plays fast and loose with reality in general).

[identity profile] osoreranai.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I read on Wikipedia. And that's the thing about marines. They tend to be a very incredible group of people, but not always in the way that you would expect. Nor necessarily in the way that you would want, either. But if GK is anything like reality, they'll capture that part just fine.
