I've never gotten a 'WOW YOUR ENGLISH IS VERY GOOD!' actually, it's usually a 'Ni hao' on the street or more often just getting shit from people around me for the lousy (read: non-existent) state of my Chinese. Which I guess speaks to how I'm mostly surrounded by Asians all the time....

I feel bad about it but mostly I try not to think about it, because I have two main sentiments re: my terrible Chinese which are either 1) guilt, shame, embarrassment and self-loathing or 2) feeling tired of feeling guilty, shamed, embarrassed and self-loathing. And both kind of suck and bring me down so avoidavoidavoid, with some intention of improving in the future.

No, I get it! There is a lot of baggage that comes with being an immigrant kid/hyphenated Asian, I think, and straddling two cultures and figuring out how much of each you want to embrace or reject and whether you're allowed and if you fit, blah blah blah. My issues, let me show you them. It really does come down to figuring it out for yourself, though, regardless of what other people say or do.
