Happy Mid-Autumn Festival 2012!

DID YOU KNOW that one way to feel happy and accomplished is to be SUPER PRODUCTIVE? Alert the media: breaking news, right? I got a lot of things done this morning and I haven't even had lunch yet, and I'm feeling very pleased with myself. Look, ma, I'm not a totally useless waste of space!

Also, Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! No mooncakes for me this year but I did talk to family in the US and in China. Which brings me to consider:

What're your favorite kinds of mooncakes? Red bean is the classic I grew up on, but my favorite is actually lotus root. With salty duck egg yolk! Most people I know seem to hate the yolk, though, but I like the saltiness to break up the otherwise heavy sweetness. Opinions?

The new One Direction single is stupid catchy, as always, with amazing lyrics that make me chortle:

Let's go crazy crazy crazy until we see the sun
I know we only met but let's pretend it's love
And never never never stop for anyone
Tonight let's get some and live like we're young

GOOD LIFE LESSONS.

Apparently Adam Lambert was on The Voice of China, which is The Voice but, you know, in China, same format and chairs and everything (they bought the rights). My parents are obsessed with the show and have been trying to get me to watch it forever but I never expected the crossover of what is mostly RL (family always falls into that category) with what is more fandom-associated (Glambert, yes, from those American Idol RPS days).

P.S. Pterry's vampires in Carpe Jugulum (which I'm rereading) are so excellent. ♥

P.P.S. I LOVE FOOOOOD. For lunch I'm eating chili-basil eggplant and pork and Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce. Also, juice. I love juice.

AUUUUUUGH I am craving mooncakes like you wouldn't believe; we're having Chuseok in Korea right now, which is also a foodie holiday, but I was born a Chinese-American gal (regardless of the later Korean influences in my life), and I miss my Chinese food, yo. I also grew up on classic red bean, but I also dig lotus root and taro! I have a mad love affair with taro. *__*

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-09-30 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh what kind of food do they have for Chuseok? No mooncakes, right, but what're the big things there? But yeah, I know what you mean - the stuff you grow up on is always going to be the nostalgic comfort-food type stuff.

Taro is delicious! One of my favorite ways to have it, actually, is 拔丝鱼头 -- I don't even know how to translate that. The sticky fried caramel-esque version. SO BAD FOR YOU. SO GOOD.

[identity profile] chaos-harmony.livejournal.com 2012-09-30 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhhh, my family served a lot of stuff fried in egg batter, my favorite being the ambiguous kebobs (which seem to contain peppers, crab meat, red meat, and... other stuff fried in egg batter?) There was also squid, and a lot of things I don't know the names of, which were nonetheless pretty delicious! And dinner was a giant-ass bowl of 비빔밥 ("bibimbap," I think is the correct romanization?) I am actually vaguely ill from the sheer amount of food I've consumed today. NO REGRETS.

One of my favorite ways to have it, actually, is 拔丝鱼头

SHUT UP I LOVE THAT SHIT, IT IS SO UNHEALTHY AND YET DELICIOUS. I never know how to explain it to like, people who don't speak Chinese though.

UGH I LOVE FOOD. Korean food, Chinese food. *__* As long as it is delicioussss. I will just enjoy your food coma vicariously, lol.

YES, IT'S SO GREAT. So rare when not in Asia though. But I guess you can technically make it at home...

oh god, I can't choose, there're so many fantastic different varieties of juice to choose from! okay, here we go:

APPLE AND MANGO JUICE

i just hate how heavy they are.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-10-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
do you find apple juice heavy? It's pretty light, I feel, compared to mango or orange.

IT IS THE SEASON FOR APPLE CIDER :D

oh, no, it's apple-and-mango juice!

IT IS ALWAYS THE SEASON FOR APPLE CIDER

Dude, Adam Lambert on The Voice of China, and the whole season finale was like the highlight of my family's Mid-Autumn Festival thing. Even my granny watches it and she calls us up and she's all talking about it and we're like yEAH!

Ooh, also, a vote for lotus root. It's super yummy.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-10-03 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Was it great? I seriously haven't seen it yet; my mom's been trying to get me to watch The Voice of China for months now but I keep getting distracted by, god, terrible Teen Wolf fandom or something.

Yesss, lotus root. I also just want some normal stir-fried lotus root now. ;__;

[identity profile] silentdictator.livejournal.com 2012-10-04 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
OMIGOSH TEEN WOLF. Sterek is pretty crazy. But yes, Adam Lambert was fabulous and he even sang a duet with one of the singers competing.

aposdijapodi. yay.

Yes, being productive is huge pick-me-up! And it makes you want to do more! Sometimes, lol.
My fave is red bean... and I hate egg so that never worked for me. :)

Happy Mid Autumn to you too!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-10-03 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Many people seem to hate egg, so I'm not surprised. But I hope you had some red bean mooncake! :D

Even when work is kind of crazy, I still feel good if I've been productive by the end of the day. Little life victories, you know? Also, cooking something delicious!

[identity profile] thelastroads.livejournal.com 2012-10-04 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
)))): I didn't get mooncakes! They are so expensive in London. I scoured Chinatown for them and the cheapest I could get them for was £5 for one mooncake. I did compensate by eating Chinese food though!

I love love love the lotus root ones @___@ I don't really like the egg yolk though, it's too much for one mooncake I feel! I wonder how people can handle having double or even triple yolks in the mooncakes...

ALSO HI MEI WE HAVEN'T TALKED IN THE LONGEST TIME. I LIVE.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-10-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
HELLO, YOU. I actually need to send you a message, which I will do momentarily on FB, lol. We will catch up proper, indeed!

Man, those mooncakes are ridiculously pricey. But at least you made up for it by eating delicious Chinese food. I've always preferred the savory entree stuff to desserts and sweet snacks anyway. Yum.

I love the salty egg yolk. Double egg yolk!!
