my heart cannot handle all of these assaults

Welcome to my belated feelings about Jesse Eisenberg, 2 years after the rest of the world has moved on. In my defense, 2 years ago I was recovering from Inception fandom and galivanting about Southeast Asia in a bliss of food and hot weather. I was distracted! Also, SJM.

But oh my god, Jesse Eisenberg. There is just something about his way with words, his dry humor, his thoughtful responses to asinine questions by reporters, and something perhaps to the impression of "intense vulnerability" he gives off, as Andrew Garfield put it. It's not that I want to mother him and pat his face, nor that I want to sex him up, but more along the lines of actually maybe - unutterably pretentious as it sounds - having fallen a bit in love with his soul, or at least the parts bared enough for the world to see. (I am not so delusional yet - or anymore? - to think that we could ever really know the full personality of a celebrity through their interviews alone, confessional as they may seem. Too many years of RPF have left their marks on me.)

HE FOSTERS CATS!! (I want a cat.)

Aaand I just got distracted for 15 minutes typing up this post by scouring YouTube clips of him. Yep. Who wants to see Now You See Me? I DO. What is that cast even. It looks like an unnecessarily explosive high-speed chase type of heist movie with lots of people in suits! I am down with this.

Aside from all those feelings, I've been up and down with hockey and my Canes and Flyers. Speaking of the latter, Philadelphia has been amazing in my two trips there for food, friends, and hockey, and I hope that trend continues! I found the most excellent Chinese restaurant there, serving food so spicy it will set your tongue on fire and bring tears to your eyes, but at least half of those tears are from blissful joy & dancing taste buds. Their Chinatown also provided me delicious egg tarts (蛋塔!!!) and milk tea, and hair stylists who actually know what they're doing with Asian hair that don't cost upwards of $200. Speaking of which, I chopped off about 6 inches of hair yesterday! My hair hasn't been this short since, well, probably 2 years ago back in early 2011. I am just revisiting the past these days, apparently.

I love Claude Giroux being a troll, I love Patrick Kane's filthy goals, I love that Mihae are hanging out so much more now and seem so much closer, and I love the Changtoria reflection-in-a-spoon scandal. Please. Victoria Song is flawless and could date ALL Y'ALL IDOLS. Nichkhun, Changmin, Kyuhyun, whomever. Amber, Luna, Krystal, Sulli. Okay, maybe not Zhou Mi. Aside from him though, I basically ship Victoria/anyone.

Work is going through a hellacious period, and yes I am using bad '90s slang, but I survive with having weekend plans with friends who keep me sane and happy.

What else? I once had so many serious analytic & critical thoughts about various news stories, but the time has passed and I have run out of thoughts and am surviving only on feelings. Give me some time to recollect my wits and thoughts.

Can you believe it's March already?! Just two and a half months until Star Trek Into Darkness!

1) I had to look up who jesse einberg was.

wow your hair is so long that i thought the picture you linked was the before picture and was really confused for a while looking for a picture of you with like, a pixie cut or something.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2013-03-03 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I only vaguely knew who he was previously due to proximity to friends who got into The Social Network fandom and batted his name about. Otherwise, clueless. But now i am learning more and having feelings.

2 & 3. Thanks! :D

I hope you're doing well too. Seriously, already March! Time moves so quickly sometimes.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2013-03-03 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha, yes, I should've clarified! It was the longest I've ever had it before, so cutting it to this length, while not objectively short, is the shortest I've had it in ages. I do this thing where I grow my hair out just to cut it in boredom. I have had chin length pixie-esque cuts before too, but I think I've learned that that hairstyle is not particularly flattering for my face shape. IDK. I am so lazy about my hair. I don't even own a blow-dryer, to the appall of some of my friends. Wash, air-dry, tie back, done!

my god, mei, your hair must have been enormously long before your haircut! your hair now is probably about my hair length now, which I consider just about manageable.

ALSO I JUST BOUGHT A MONTH'S SUBSCRIPTION TO NHL VAULT so I can watch games without having to stay up late, what am I doing with my life/bank account ;___;

re:Changtoria: have people even considered that they might just be hanging out as friends -.- -.- -.-

I can't believe it's March either; only 3 weeks of my undergraduate teaching left EVER. sobbing how did this even happen???

It's funny, I always had crushes on fictional character, but for the longest time, I never got celebrity crushes. AND THEN COLLEGE HAPPENED, and the Internet made interviews and whatnot increasingly accessible, and it was weird and horrifying and mesmerizing.

Er... in short, I get it now. ^^

FYEAHHHH STAR TREK INTO THE DARKNESS, speaking of celebrity crushes, I still don't know what to make of my recent, totally belated but undeniable fascination with Chris Pine (who is pretty much always some variant of a Jim Kirk in any given role of his, but as Jim Kirk is a charming bastard, I have zero problems with this). SNARKY BLUE-EYED DOUCHEBAGS, they'll do me in every time, GODDAMMIT.

Now I just have to bully someone in Korea into seeing it with me in May. HEY KOREAN COWORKERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AN AMERICAN CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE.

[identity profile] chaos-harmony.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
P.S. re: hair, I AM GROWING MINE OUT, and it is... interesting. I resort to doing a lot of messy ballet-style updos and depending on bobby pins. The last time I had long hair, I was still a teenager, and had like zero idea how to deal with it, and now I'm all, HAIRCARE PRODUCTS, COME TO ME, OMG HAIR LOTION.

... that said, I still don't own a blowdryer. My life is an eternal war between vanity and laziness.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It was! So long! And get EVERYWHERE. Part of me was just taken with the idea that it was the longest I had ever had it and was curious how much longer I could grow it, but really there was no need to keep it that long.

Er, I am not sure how NHL vault works. Does it let you see this season's games? I thought they only had old games. I have GameCenter, which lets me stream games as they show or go back and watch the ones I missed. Ugh, basically the NHL continues to make mad money despite pissing off all the fans re: the lockout. We are all just desperate, I guess. :(

BOYS AND GIRLS CAN'T BE JUST FRIENDS, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. At least not in idol world, apparently.

oh my god really? But you just entered uni, like, yesterday! ;___;

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And I just had crushes on everyone! Everyone unattainable & unavailable either through fame or fictionality, that is. But damn, yes, the accessibility of interviews and information in general has really helped facilitate that.

Oh man, Chris Pine is great, but you're totally right. Even him voicing Jack Frost in Rise of the Guardian made me laugh, because Jack Frost was basically Jim Kirk. NOT THAT I PROTEST. I am sure somewhere among your Korean coworkers is someone super-excited to see the Star Trek movie too. Chris Pine & his dazzling blue eyes! Maybe some of them care about Bandersnatch Cumbersnoot! Or maybe they just love lens flares like JJ Abrams does.

SOON.

My life is an eternal war between vanity and laziness.

Amen. Thankfully, my hair doesn't need any real sort of maintenance (sometimes I forget to brush it even...), but it never achieves that pretty look right after a cut & blowdry by someone with a round brush and far more patience than I will ever have, lol.

[identity profile] chaos-harmony.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That icon is AMAZINGLY ACCURATE. Have you seen this summary (http://sarahtales.livejournal.com/144535.html) of the movie? Because that's what it makes me think of. Also, that one fic that basically describes Kirk's internal monologue as "I’m so awesome! I’m so awesome! Ow! I just got punched in the face! Hey! Look! Boobs! I’m so awesome! I’m so awesome! Ow! I just got punched in the face." Because... yes. Oh, Kirk. It's always the hyper-intelligent dumbasses, isn't it?

Even him voicing Jack Frost in Rise of the Guardian made me laugh, because Jack Frost was basically Jim Kirk. NOT THAT I PROTEST.

Ahahaha, oh man, you should watch The Princess Diaries 2, if only because it is THE FORBIDDEN ROMANCE OF CATWOMAN AND CAPTAIN KIRK. I mean, Anne Hathaway's Princess Mia is actually adorkable and really nothing like her Catwoman, but CHRIS PINE IS BASICALLY AN AU!KIRK THAT GREW UP AS A SNARKY, FLIRTY YOUNG EUROPEAN NOBLEMAN WHO WENT TO CAMBRIDGE AND COOKS AND RIDES HORSES AND DOES ARCHERY (rather than, you know, a snarky, flirty farmboy from the future), and I am completely and unironically charmed. /twelve years old forever.

Oh god, the introduction of Benedict Cumberbatch the throaty-voiced villain is going to bring such an influx of kinky dubcon fic into Star Trek fandom. I can see the giantass kinkmeme in my mind's eye already. It'll be like that whole weird Loki thing ALL OVER AGAIN. (The question is whether fandom's designated whump-bearing woobie is going to be Spock, Kirk, or dark horse McCoy?)

[livejournal.com profile] sarahtales' movie summaries are always hilarious & excellent.

I've seen Princess Diaries 2, lolol Chris Pine's acting debut, but it probably merits a rewatch as it's been ages.

Fandom's designated woobie has tended to be Kirk over the past few years, regardless of who he's paired with. It probably had something to do with how pretty he looked beat up/strangled/maimed throughout that entire first movie. Plus there's the whole potential of his most tragic angsty past on Delta Vega (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Delta_Vega) (as cultivated from TOS - not precisely canon for this universe, but it hasn't been disproven either, and fans will never be stopped!).

With the spoilers/speculation I've heard from this new movie, I suspect Kirk will remain the most battered & martyred woobie of all!

Oh man, I have to be honest: I am immensely tired of Cumberbatch's batshit stans (and some of them are truly batshit, oh the wanks I could link to), but I try to just avoid them at large and not rain on anyone else's parade. GIVE ME MY ENTERPRISE CAST. So excited for more Sulu & Chekov & Scotty & Uhura & everyoneeee.

[identity profile] chaos-harmony.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yessss, this does not surprise me re: fandom's collective hard-on for whumping Kirk. Especially since the movie also seems to imply a potentially abusive stepfather (uncle?) and probably well-intentioned but still frequently absent mother (and WHERE is she while her son is getting into all these shenanigans anyway? I'd kill to see screentime for an adult Kirk and his one living parent!)

I... have never really gotten the Cumberbatch thing? Much like I have never gotten the HIddleston thing. Like, yes, they are fine actors with interesting (albeit hardly classically handsome) bone structure and (in Cumberbatch's case) a lovely speaking voice, but the CRAZY, I do not understand it. Also, Sherlock fandom frightens me. ))):

I WANT MY ENTERPRISE CAST, YESSSSS, THE SUPPORTING CHARACTERS ARE SO FABULOUS. I ACTUALLY KIND OF LOVE ENSEMBLE GEN BEST OF ALL?! I mean, if I must read shipfic (which is not actually my preference, because really, I ship Everyone/The Enterprise, SELF-MADE FAMILIES FTW), my favorites tend to be the sort of cracky pairings that draw on the ensemble cast. Like that time I found KIRK/SULU FENCING FIC (one where Sulu teaches Kirk to fence, and one genderbent!AU drabble where still-a-dude!Kirk is randomly confiscating a smirking lady!Sulu's weapons, BOTH OF WHICH ARE SUPER HOT; SULU IS BASICALLY MADE OF WIN IN EITHER GENDER).

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank God. I liked BBC Sherlock well enough, but the fans were ridiculous (and have managed to trash in defense of Sherlock at least four fandoms by my count now - SHINee, Downton Abbey, Elementary, and Teen Wolf) and then I learned more about Cumberbatch that did not endear him to me at all (one example relevant to the topic at hand being that he confronted Sir Patrick Stewart at a restaurant in the middle of a dinner with a friend to ask him if being in Stark Trek would damage his career. REALLY?) but I didn't want to badmouth him horribly if you were a fan. I never understood the Hiddleston thing either, but mostly because I never got into Avengers at all, though from what I've heard he at least seems like a genial & lovely person.

I don't think Kirk/Sulu is that crack, really! Obviously not a juggernaut like K/S or even Sulu/Chekov, but a pretty popular minor pairing, I think? Sulu is AMAZING though and the fact that he's played by John Cho is just extra double awesome.

Two gen recs I have:
http://karanguni.livejournal.com/143097.html (Chekov POV!)
http://rheanna27.livejournal.com/110953.html (Uhura/Gaila friendship!! So amazing)

I love fics that, no matter the pairing, manage to work in the supporting cast in amazing ways. :D

[identity profile] chaos-harmony.livejournal.com 2013-03-04 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
SHINee, Downton Abbey, Elementary, and Teen Wolf

*blinks*

With the obvious exception of Elementary, what do ANY of those fandoms even have to do with BBC Sherlock? All I can think of is that one song SHINee did called "Sherlock" with the signature terrifying-looking choreography and weirdass music video, and like, maybe the fact that Downton Abbey is British? BUT I CAN LITERALLY THINK OF NO OTHER CONNECTIONS, WTF, SHERLOCK FANDOM.

Heeee, I have read the Uhura/Gaila friendship fic (I LOVE THEM, OMG), but that Chekov fic was adorbs, what with his science bro'ing with Scotty. Thanks for the rec! In return, here, have:

The one where Kirk accidentally almost sleeps with Sulu's space captain mom, and instead just ends up having a thoughtful conversation about families (in which Sulu's mom is AWESOME): http://archiveofourown.org/works/151294

Gaila-centric Academy fic, also featuring a lovely blossoming friendship with Uhura (and, unexpectedly enough, Spock, who is wonderful here): http://archiveofourown.org/works/40232

you are a masochist ...

it does! I haven't actually tried it out yet because I've been so busy, but once I finish this project and my Last Undergraduate Essay Ever Aglskdlgjielsks I will try watching a game!

I think it's a case of inelastic demand ))):

why are fandoms so crazy, mei. ))):

I KNOW RIGHT?! my brain can hardly handle it!!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2013-03-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
From what I read later it all had to do with Tumblr. SHINee got hate for (accurately) using the Sherlock tag to tag their non-BBC stuff. Then Downton Abbey beat Sherlock for a BAFTA of some sort, and so the fandom decided to troll the Downton Abbey tag with hate and talk about how Sherlock was so much more superior. (Hilariously, they misspelled it "Downtown Abbey" and so much of the hate went unnoticed.) Then in Teen Wolf, they recently announced their Season 3 premiere date, someone made a post that essentially said "Season 3 on June 3, praise the lord!", tagged it teen wolf, and a bunch of Sherlock fans somehow thought it applied to Sherlock and were furious that it wasn't. They dogpiled the original poster and demanded she apologize because not everyone can see tags and shouldn't she know how there were so many Sherlock fans on Tumblr and...some other batshittery, idek. @_@

So now you know!

Thanks for the recs. They will be a nice palate cleanser lol.
