Apropos of nothing, a few fics I read this past week and enjoyed:
1. Belated by thewhitestag
DCU, Tim/Kon, PG-13, 3556 words
Can you still call it impulsive when they’ve been holding it in for years?
Short and cute. Sometimes I just miss Tim/Kon. Tim is emotionally repressed, and gets over it.
2. 10 things i ____ about you by robpatff
One Direction, Zayn/Niall, R, 13,692 words
“Did the doctors tell you anything already?”
Niall shrugs a little. The movement catches the collar of the too-big t-shirt he has on, one of Liam’s he must have stashed away in his bag. There’s a bruise on his shoulder, probably from the impact, hitting something hard, unmoving and solid. “Far as I know I’m thinking about trying out for X-Factor next month. They said that already happened.” He bites his lip, and his gaze flicks over at Zayn for a moment. “Did I win?”
Amnesia fic.
A quiet piece with a slower rhythm that took me a moment to get into, but once I fell into it, I really enjoyed it. The fic feels a little muted, but like more is running under the surface. Full of feelings but not in an overwrought kind of way. I'm not sure the repetition of a certain sentence worked (by the end, it was more distracting than anything else), but the list motif wove in a lot better, and more naturally, to the story.
3. nevada's fault by irishmizzy and miss_bennie
One Direction, Zayn/Niall, NC-17, 33,980 words
“Niall Horan, will you -- ow,” he winces when Harry flicks his neck, but when Zayn starts up again, the disaffected tone is gone, “will you do me the honor of marrying me tonight and winning this bloody game of truth or dare?”
Much different in tone from the former fic: much more high energy and full of crazy boy shenanigans and jokes and talk. Really good for band interactions and showing the different characters/personalities and their different relationships with each other. Lots of casually ridiculous antics that I accept as par for the course for 1D, plus hot sex. And also creeping feelings because of course it is shipfic. ;) Good times. I love a good trope fic, and married-in-Vegas is always fun. (Don't, uh, look too hard at the dialogue tagging.)
