fic recs and chinese slang

K-pop fic recs @ [livejournal.com profile] bulchibyung!

Tori, why am I not surprised to see you there? So the very opposite of surprised. ;D

I'll still rec things here, just because I do rec dumps (so fscking many alksjfld) and get to be brief and incoherent. You'll get to see my saner, more in-depth and thoughtful recs over at the comm.

And to render this post slightly more useful:

Let's learn English Chinese slang! Ever wondered how to say "what the hell" in Mandarin or maybe "porn flick"? Well, now you can find out!

Yes, yes, I educate my flist with such high-class things. These were really because [livejournal.com profile] dear_whimsy and I wanted to know how to make ZM ask lewd things of HG in Chinese, while poor Henry remains utterly bewildered. My fandom, it is of highly intellectual pursuits~

I think it is very applicable to real life. :( I plan on using these phrases when I'm in China this summer, I don't know about you guys.

I can see it being more useful than when I embraced 1920's american slang! (though I still think that the cat's pajamas is awesome :D)

Remember to get a kăizi while in China! ;)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I am broadening my horizons with learning all this slang. So I can get by in China, haha. It will be totally useful, I believe this.

[identity profile] uminohikari.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*dies of laughter* I like how the wiki page is actually organized

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, hey, we take our slang very seriously. All the better to learn it! ;D

[identity profile] loveblackcoffee.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
you my friend are so lame

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I could swear at you in Chinese!

[identity profile] phasera.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm, cool comm, but it doesn't look like it's updated very often...? O_o ahh, unless the posts are f-locked and i can't see them.

ahahah, and your icon made me LOL. XD so true!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The comm is newish! It just went actually public so...anyway, you know if I'm reccing things, it will be updated all the time. XD

[identity profile] dear-whimsy.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I COULD SAY THE SAME. ;DDD We can tagteam rec, whee~

Also, today I was like, testing my newfound skills with "干你的妈~!", but one of my more Asian friends rejected it. ;____; I think I'm doing it wrong. Or maybe she's just saying that so I won't say it anymore...> > She got mad at me for swearing. O:! Anyway, that languagerealm place looks great, since it's probably actually correct, fufufufufu~

吃豆腐 is still the weirdest ever, like what.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
SO YOU'RE WRITING THIS FIC, RIGHT?

Um, while it will be fun to have an "official" place to rec, it will require me to be mostly objective and sane, which is not as fun as being wildly biased and incoherent. :D So I plan on picking and choosing what to rec over there, obviously...

If anyone ever used that while talking to me, I'd think they were asking if that weird guy I met on the streets had tried to take me out to a tofu restaurant, not "hey did he cop a feel?" So strange, China...

[identity profile] dear-whimsy.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
YES DEFINITELY. *____*

True, true. The lack of keysmashing and "omgs" is hurting my soul a little. DD:

Exactly, omg. .____. I'd be like, "OKAY I LIKE TOFU. 8D"

[identity profile] ricciolo.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I like how there's a wiki page for Chinese slang but none for Korean slang (and yes, I was dorky enough to check for one). XD

I'm sure with those words, you'll be an absolute hit in China. ;)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, I see you're also on the rec team now! :D Exciting!

I don't need Wiki for Korean slang. I have this handy book called "Making Out in Korean" that offers me useful phrases on how to eat/drink/be merry and also how to sleep with someone and turn down an elopement. LOL. As well as colorful curses.

[identity profile] ricciolo.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU HAVE A BOOK FOR THAT?! :O The title is pretty awesome though. Tell me how useful it is in Korea. ;D

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha I'm pretty sure I can't use any of my book in Korea because it's so casual, informal, and so very...rude. XD I will get kicked out of the country.

[identity profile] meemobunny.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
hee, those sites are awesome (i spent my morning skimming the wiki page instead of studying for an exam that was in the afternoon) -- the wiki page is so comprehensive! last summer, i tried getting my cousins to teach me a few curse words in chinese in exchange for me teaching them english curses (i am an awesome role model for my younger cousins, clearly :D), but all i got from them were the usual 王八蛋 and 去死. some of those terms are so strange! like the "没屁股眼" one!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that a lot of the terms are really weird but then I thought "it's probably equally weird in English". I mean "cop a feel"? How does that translate literally, you know? Or if we start using baseball analogies like third base and score and ...whatever. I'm clearly too tired to think of real examples, haha. Plus Asian languages are just prone to more metaphors/idioms in general? IDK...

Hahaha yes I do that with moving icons all the time. I just stare at them for a long time until I'm 100% sure I've seen the entire thing from beginning to end the way it should be seen. XD

♥♥ I hope you're feeling at least kind of better?

[identity profile] breathing-awake.livejournal.com 2008-04-24 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
aetohwoitaheta okay so I was/am being a creeper and read your fic recs and such and THUS I AM VERY GLAD FOR THAT COMMUNITY.

Idk if you're aware, but apparently the SJM album has actually started appearing in stores?! Someone uploaded the album and I happen to have a nice, properly tagged copy, if you so desire... *shifty eyes* I don't know if you want to download a full album or if you're against that sort of thing, but I couldn't wait, so...... yes. :D

(I think I will friend you now, haha. I think I remember you saying somewhere in comments that you generally don't friend people back, but I would very much like to see all your entries on my flist :D)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Haha apparently lots of random people stalk my journal for fic recs. :O I'm very okay with this; my recs are just an excuse for me to pimp stuff I like (and be incoherently fangirly about it while I do so), so it works out. But now there is a comm for, um, slightly more coherent and thoughtful recs! :D By people not me!

asjdfl ugh I am so tired this week and clearly incoherent, sorry.

I have the SJM album too! With proper Chinese names and everything! It makes me happy and I think I will post a reaction to it soon...ish. Maybe tomorrow or Saturday, when I have conquered certain things that need to be done and am less dead.

I ttly don't mind people friending me; I just fail at keeping up with people in return so. Maybe I should just go to sleep...

[identity profile] breathing-awake.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
This week has been horrible for me too ;__; Oh school, why must you insist on testing everything in one week?!

I pretty much freaked out by myself and listened to the entire album on repeat last night. I would be doing the same tonight, if I hadn't found Epik High's new album....... (the internet will be the death of me.) I will eagerly await your reaction post!

Also, your icon is made of pure win. Oh Heechul!Engrish, how special it is.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I love every single reference in the world to SJFH. *__* Heechul's black rapper English included. ♥

I adore Epik High's new album. I had One stuck in my head for days before I listened to Me and got the Chinese version of Happiness stuck in my head, lol. Except I didn't know the lyrics and Korean keeps coming out when I try to sing along.
