i better get at least 300 comments on this post zomg >:(

A writer is not entitled to feedback of any kind. We put our shit out there for people to read, they'll read it or they won't, but they don't owe us JACK for the privilege of reading what we spew. By the same token, readers aren't owed fic by an author. We write and publish it because we'd like others to read it and enjoy it, because we want to express something or tell a story. It goes out into the void and if anyone shouts back, fine. If they don't say a damned word, that's the cost of doing business. It's the risk you take when you put something out there for people to read. They might love it, they might hate it, they might say nothing at all. If you can't handle it, gtfo. —[livejournal.com profile] madlori @ Fandom Wank

I love a good entitlement wank. Yet all these arguments are so familiar to me - and I realized I've seen them all over and again on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants.

What do you do if you get, gasp, only 60 comments on your newest WIP chapter? FLOUNCE, OBVIOUSLY.

I'd be open to srs biz discussions about the merits of feedback/c&c/comments in general, too, because I think everyone generally likes comments. That's cool. But holding fic hostage or feeling like you're entitled to a certain number of comments (because of all your slaving and hard work over your fic? or all of your sheer genius?) - that's just, to quote a friend, RICOCKULOUS.

In totally different news, OH MY GOD I LOVE YOTSUBA&!, WHO ELSE KNOWS THIS SERIES? T___T ♥♥ I want to snuggle it close and make everyone read it - it's just so much happy-making. (If I weren't supposed to be studying for finals right now, I'd totally make a pimp post!)

And also, manga icons manga icons I have missed them. I need to go acquire more they are so expressive because you can exaggerate those awesome facial expressions akjdsdfjl. CLAMP ART IS SO PRETTY WHY.

NEXT PROCRASTINATION: Revamping & reuploading all my icons!

I love it when people think they're entitled and owed comments. and when I say love I mean point and LOL loudly, and wander away XD it's even better when the crappy writers whine about comments too xD

I don't think I've ever received 60 comments on a fic ever, wtf who gets that many comments anyway? what's wrong with appreciating what you get, and writing just for the sheer joy of writing!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, Mica, you don't understand. If I don't get comments, it means ALL OF YOU ARE JERKS, and I'M NEVER WRITING AGAIN.

Because obviously people never just write for the sake of writing. WHAT JOY? WE'RE ONLY HERE FOR THE ADULATION! Which we totally deserve! Because we are super-fantastic-fabulous writers of geniusness!

Honestly, even if you are an amazing writer, you're not entitled to comments. I'm always surprised by people who really think they are. The girl in question apparently once complained about a "drop in readeship" on a fic that had 7 pages of comments. Wow.

Sometimes I look at shit that I literally spewed out in idk half an hour, that have an asston of comments, and then things that I've worked on for about a month, which have maybe less than ten comments and just sort of facepalm, but hey, I do it because I like it, not because I'm expecting people to wax poetic :|

But lol holding fic hostage. I'd probably comment to just say "HEY IDC :D"

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some of the most comments I've gotten are for ridiculous crackfic written in half an hour and other things don't get as much attention. People leave comments for a variety of reasons, and people like different fics for a variety of reasons too. As writers, we can appreciate comments, totally, but we can't tie up our writing to those alone. :/

Fic hostage just strikes me as defeating the entire purpose of writing aksjd ugh.

I've been reading that kind of wank since I joined my first online fandom. It's a little comforting to know that not much changes over time. ^____^

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess it proves that fandom will always be fandom, no matter what series or what time or how old the fans are. Comforting in its own way, though kind of sad in another, haha.

I haven't read Azumanga Daioh, but I did watch it. :3 Lovely and random, lots of fun, but I think Yotsuba just aksdjfl hits that nostalgic childhood spot for me.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Like [livejournal.com profile] sharona1x2 said above, it's just a mark of how fandom doesn't really change over time.

[identity profile] sapphynashi.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I always loved it when authors would be like "I'M NOT WRITING THE NEXT CHAPTER UNLESS I GET THIS THIS MANY REVIEWS" on FFN. I guess the same goes for LJ comments these days (...I might have just made myself feel old...).

Admittedly, when I get more comments, it is easier for me to be excited about writing more. The encouragement is there and it's nice. I'm more likely to lose interest in something without that kind of interaction to facilitate ideas and excitement (although laziness on my part is also a detracting factor, lol). But it's not something anybody should be held accountable for. :\

Plus, I'd rather get five thoughtful comments than fifty "omg ur great write more plz" comments. I was just talking about this with someone last night.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree that comments are great! They're encouraging and nice to get, especially the thoughtful ones. But no one has a right to any comments, much less a right to thoughtful comments v. "yay i liked that write moar" comments. sljkfkd yeah. I lost my steam. This argument is so repetitive, haha. It's just that this girl in particular already had a shitton of comments, much more than many people in fandom get, and apparently it still wasn't enough to satisfy her. Jeez.

No it's only natural to DEMAND AND EXPECT AT LEAST 200. ALL THE TIME. Because we're all seekritly BNF-wannabes, don't you know? And we are just that awesome. Why doesn't the rest of the world realize this? :(

LOL fic entitlement.
That's almost as bad as people who get all wanky because they didn't get enough comments on their music-posting communities - for chrissakes, I don't owe you shit. Thanks for uploading, but uh. Seriously? Wanking because the download:comment ratio is really low? IT'S NOT EVEN YOUR MUSIC.

YOTSUBA&! is the one with the little green-haired girl and the sunflower? If so, omg that's by the same mangaka as Azumanga Daioh, jlkjsf; so adorable. ♥

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
On a slightly-related topic, I also get really grumpy at people who lock their icon-posts in 2 days. A week, I'm a little more lenient towards, but sometimes I'm not even on LJ for two days! /whining (but this may be my own fannish entitlement showing haha)

Yes! Yotsuba is the little green-haired girl and she is frickin' adorable and also I love Azumanga Daioh. :D But Yotsuba more because the series really hits home with refreshing take to life and golden innocence of childhood~ ♥

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, there is different etiquette for gift fics and generally for requests as well. It's poor form to not at least leave a "thank you!"

NO NOT AT 300 OMFG IT MEANS YOU GUYS DON'T APPRECIATE ME. I am leaving LJ FOREVER.

Yotsuba is super random and cute - just about a green-haired little girl's everyday life. But so good, idek!

[identity profile] halcyon-morn.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I want to spam this entry until you have 300 comments, but I'm afraid that that, too, might qualify as RICOCKULOUS. :(

Speaking of comments, did you get the RICOCKULOUSLY long comment I left on the birthday fic you wrote me? Because I don't want you to think I'm a RICOCKULOUS entitled little shit. D:

...

...RICOCKULOUS. I'm sorry, I just fucking love that word. XD

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
YOU SHOULD TOTALLY SPAM AWAY. HI CHRIS.

alskfjd also yes I totally got your comment to the bday fic and I totally failed at replying because life ate my soul (and free time T_T). But I'm super happy you liked the fic because the comment made me all :D :D :D ♥!

Lol, holding fic hostage. That. That's special.

I don't know what's good for me and am scrounging for manga to read again, so uhm what is Yotsuba about? /curious!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
According to its wikipage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yotsuba%26!):

It depicts the everyday adventures of a young girl named Yotsuba as she learns about the world around her. (uh, better summary here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yotsuba%26!#Story))

It's really cute, so feel-good. Great pick-me-up and nostalgic about childhood (like Calvin & Hobbes is) and aslkdjfd. Random. Fun. I love it. :D No overarching plot, just everyday life. No big morals or themes, very subtle way of emphasizing hat childhood is carefree and should be enjoyed. Um...what else to say about it? Ridiculously cute.

Also, online here (http://koiwai.biz)!

I looked into that a bit, it made me both laugh and feel sick. I also can't believe she was complaining that "Oh woe, 600 peoplez have friended me but they won't comment, they obviously don't appreciate me enough if they won't leave me a flailing in love review!". And then yatta yatta she didn't even want a large popular journal and whatever else wank she has going on. Basically as I read her rationale for leaving LJ behind (because it was too hard on her ego) I kind of wanted to dump a cocktail on her face. Repeatedly.

Even worse were a shit load of people that fed her fucking bullshit.

I shall put Yotsuba&! on my to read list ^_^

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she took review entitlement to a new level. I understand if fandom is just not suited for you and makes you feel like crap, fine, you should make the smart choice and get out. I respect that part. But the fact that it was "oh noes enough people don't appreciate my writingz" was the source of her unhappiness? Ridiculous.

Ugh fandom. But on the bright side: Yotsuba&! So happy-making. :D

I loooooove Yotsuba&. ♥ Whenever I'm having a bad day I'll pop open one of the volumes and just feel instantly happy. XD Hopefully the English distribution issues over it will be settled soon because, man, I want volume 6!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Wiki says ADV gave up rights to Yen Press, which says volume 6 will be out Sept 2009, volume 7 in December, and volume 8 in April. So it seems sorted out, though the wait is long and distressing. :(

I have a link to scanlated chapters up through volume 8 and newest chapters, if you'd like! :D It really is so cheerful-making. ♥

No, you should clearly hold your fic hostage until you've gotten at least 10! And demand long, detailed reviews too! Not just one-liners that say "yay write moar plz". Clearly, you deserve them.
