this would usually go in the RL journal but whatever

Y'all totally need a life update and some movie recs.

Yesterday I went to fill my girl quota in a way I've been neglecting for months! After spending the morning finishing up War Games (I'll have to make a separate post talking about my reaction because, fuck, the fic was novel-length, incredibly plotty, well-executed, satisfying, and also emotionally draining - god I love Star Trek XI, I really, really do), I had lunch and went to the mall.

Stuff I bought: 5 tank tops for layering (2 boy tanks in teal and navy blue, 2 lace-edged tanks in white and gray, 1 green tank), a pair of jeans, a pink zip-up hoodie, a gray scarf, 2 black skirts, and a gray long-sleeved shirt to layer over tanks.

Let me take a moment to bitch about why I bought two black skirts: seriously, why the fuck did I buy those when I already own, like, 4 other black skirts? Granted, they're all different styles - some are long and flowy, some are businessy and knee-length, some are pleated and short, and so on, but why is it that girls need, like, 5 versions of the same item of clothing? I hate being a girl. Why am I like this? Someone stop me from shopping again. At least shopping for pants has gotten easier since I figured out that Charlotte Russe basically caters to my size - shopping for shoes still makes me want to kill things. Like myself.

Also, I cannot say I'm a fan of the type of people who shop at (our specific, local) Forever 21. Renamed XXI or whatever. Just - wow. Maybe there's something about the Midwest, but those girls who live here and shop there? Make my face go :|.

After shopping though, a couple of friends and I ended up at another friend's apartment with his 42" TV to watch Ponyo on the Cliff and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, while munching on the ever-healthy dinner food of pizza. God it was so yummy though. I love Papa John's Chicken BBQ bacon. ♥

Ponyo on the Cliff: Ponyo was...ridiculously good. It's very Miyazaki, very Japanese, and it has a lot of fantastical elements to it - but it was the brightest and most uplifting Miyazaki film I've ever seen. Ponyo was so cute and strange and endearing; Sosuke was earnest and sweet. The most frightening or dark part of the entire movie had to be the violent tsunami/storm, but it's nothing compared to the darker elements of Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle or, god forbid, Princess Mononoke.

A lot of the background art was colored with pencils and it was simply gorgeous. The little details in animation really stood out to me - the way Lisa closed a door with her foot, for example, when her arms are full of groceries. The way Sosuke ran - carefully and awkwardly - when he had a pail full of water in his arms. All the little details were very realistic despite the supernatural elements of the movie, and it was so sweet and innocent and it is currently fighting Howl's Moving Castle as my favorite Miyazaki film. Honestly speaking, I liked it more than I liked Up! The storytelling styles are obviously very different, but I think Ponyo did a better job. While Up! was also fun and moving at parts, I kept comparing it to Finding Nemo and the kind of cohesive storytelling it could have been - but it fell short. Ponyo, being measured on a different scale, still did really well. Imo, of course. But I have a thing for more subtle stories that seem to focus only on one narrow premise (a tiny goldfish princess meets a five-year-old boy and falls in love) but really say much more.

Also, the ending song is ridiculously cute.

So anyone who hasn't yet watched Ponyo on the Cliff, I totally recommend it. :D

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: So I only vaguely remember this picture book from my childhood, but I'm pretty sure it did not turn out nearly as cracky as the movie did. The movie is... Okay, so the directors got high, and then they made this movie. That is basically what happened and watching the extra behind-the-scenes bits did not do much to convince me otherwise.

That said, this movie is hysterical. Very, very funny. I laughed out loud so many times throughout the movie.

So it's a lot of fun to watch - Mr. T's character steals the screen every single time he speaks - but it's full of utter over-the-top ridiculousness. But in a very PG way, which is refreshing.

My roommate and friend really really love this movie, haha. For me, it was just entertainment. I liked Ponyo better. But I'd recommend watching this for the laughs. It's not an amazing story or movie by any critical standard, but it is damn funny.

Then we watched Conan O'Brien's 10th anniversary show which was a bit nostalgic considering he's no longer on air. Also funny. Much less PG. Much more crude. Ah, how our finely-developed senses of humors have evolved with such class.

→ And because I feel a little obligated to comment on this: yeah, Heechul kissed Henry at the SS2 Shanghai Encore concert. Loling at Henry's "omg I'm totally okay this I swear this doesn't make me gay" face. And, you know. Heechul. ♥

GOING TO SEE ALICE IN WONDERLAND TODAY. Also doing hair, so pics of that and maybe new clothes to come. /camwhores to fulfill her girl quota some more

actually it looks more like henry did not approve of this kiss pre-show.

steff's theory (and i'm inclined to agree) is that heechul asked him, he said no, and heechul did it anyway

I haven't seen anything other than the pics I linked so I have no idea, really. Poor Henry. Alas, the only thing keeping me vaguely interested in SJ right now is, surprise surprise, Donghae. u___u

I feel a little badly for not having seen Ponyo yet. I should probably put that in my Netflix queue. Have fun watching Alice!

I'd definitely recommend seeing it - it was really cute, uplifting, and sweet. :D

I will, thank you!

okay, so I totally read "PG" as "PG Wodehouse" rather than "Parental Guidance". Oops~

Henry, your delusions of heterosexuality are delightful. One day I will write you fic. This day will be after I finish that Stardust!GK AU.

Henry is delightful and needs more fic, yes. I have a headache from 3 straight hours of productivity. It is time to break for fic or food, I think.

HOLY COW CHARLOTTE RUSSE HAS SOME GREAT SALES *o* I always hate buying pants....I'm always too short or the waist is always too large or something. I stick with Gap, as expensive as it can be, is fairly good with styles, sizes and quality. It also works out because I rarely go shopping.

I live in the Northwest and I never got the hype regarding XXI. Sure the clothes are "trendy" and inexpensive, but it looks like it would perish one load in the wash :| Some of their clothes remind me of stuff 2NE1 and 4Minute wear.

I still love SJ and kpop, but school is keeping me from really becoming a super fan, but I think Heechul should go after Kyu or Hae next time :3 Or like, Kibum needs to make an appearance. Where is heeeee ;___;

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-03-08 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of Charlotte Russe - though I didn't get anything from them other than jeans this time. I wasn't entirely in the shopping mood despite ending up with a decent amount of stuff - oh god XXI's "fashions" scared me. Just. It's like someone blind to all patterns and any sense of matching threw together sequens and denim and raggedy-edged fabric and decided to call it a dress or a shirt. You really have to dig to find some stuff that you can, as a non-k-idol, wear outside in public, lol.

Ahahaha this is me not caring about kpop right now, but if Heechul went for Donghae? I might die with joy. Cinhae omfg. (I've given up on expecting Kibum to show up, sigh.)

B-but I love XXI. The thing is, though, they sell such a massive variety of clothing... that there are entire sections that are horrific, yet there's still lots of things I like.
Most of my outfit today was from there - black floral skirt with little pink details (http://img.pupe.ameba.jp/image/item/l/uvq0IbEZXofE.jpg) pastel pink button-up shirt, patent flats, a black cami underneath the button-up, black tights... it might not be your style, but both the cotton button-up shirt and the skirt were from there, and have been serving me just fine~

Never been in Charlotte Russe, I'm not sure where the nearest one to me is... I'll have to look it up. :3

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dude I totally bought stuff from XXI - there's a huge variety in there for sure. There's stuff I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole but a lot of cute things too. No, it's just the type of people I ran into at this specific XXI that made me :|-face so hard. Ugh. I can't even explain. So sad.

Also sometimes (most of the time) I am waaaaay too lazy to coordinate my clothes into cute outfits. /fails at being a stereotypical girl :'(
