I watched Gravity last Wednesday in IMAX 3D (fucking pricey tickets, holy hell) - it visually stunning, though the characters and their stories were not particularly fleshed out or nuanced or original. But oh man, let me repeat: visually stunning. There definitely ought to be all sorts of technical awards for that.

Before the movie, I also saw trailer for "47 Ronin", which looks like a terriblazing Japanese fantasy revenge action adventure flick, but hey, if Hollywood is going to make those regardless, I'd prefer having some Asian scenery and music and cast. Asian faces on my screen for a change! It is literally better than nothing, because out of the 6 trailers I saw that night (Thor 2, Hobbit 2, Ender's Game, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Secret Life of Walter Smitty, 47 Ronin), 5 were all 90% white and about white people saving the world. Chris Pine's movie "Jack Ryan" had zero non-white people in the trailer, not even in background minor roles! Ugh. At least Keanu Reeves is half-Asian, even if I'd rather the movie star Kikuchi Rinko front and center and not be about this outsider/foreigner being the savior we were all waiting for. Yet again.

However, lol, Jin is in this movie! Oh Jin. Hopefully they don't make him speak English like they did with Rain. And Jay Chou. I don't even care that the movie looks cheesy and ridiculous, though, because it promises fighting and prettiness and I am here for that. A different part of me can savor the ~artistic~ beauty of life and art some other time. I just want to be entertained. Yes, I am your lowest common denominator audience. (Apparently I grew out of my clinging to elitism because -- as valuable as certain types of art are and despite how much I will always value education and never deny its importance -- I've come to realize so much elitism is really just an excuse to feel superior and to be exclusionary. Dude, what exactly is the purpose here? For instance, I may never watch The Notebook or read Fifty Shades of Grey, mostly out of laziness and lack of attention span, but I have nothing inherently against them. People who read/watch those and love them are getting something out of it; and in the meantime I am watching Say Yes to the Dress on TLC and reading regency romances, so who am I to judge? I have zero grounds upon which to judge.)

Sometimes I just feel like the circulation of this "I'm so special, we are all so uniquely special and different from everyone else" attitude has really just come to bring us more harm than good. I mean, in a sense, we are! Value yourself! Etc. Just...not on grounds of devaluing other people, I guess.

An episode in the tragedy of my life: I was happily washing my coffee pot (because I'm weird and like doing the dishes) and then it just...broke. In my hands. While I was rinsing it out. Apparently the glass just got tired of retaining its coffee pot shape and gave up on life. Who knew that happened?! Coffee pots shouldn't be allowed to have existential crises, goddammit.

So, yes, I know what I will be asking my parents for for my birthday. If I survive until then. D:

Work provides coffee for weekdays but, oh god, the weekends. Maybe I'll go hipster and explore some non-Starbucks coffee shops and go live out a coffee shop AU or something. "Hello, barista, thanks for the latte, would you like to become half an OTP with me and have hilarious miscommunications, hot sex, and eventual happy ending?" Or should I just linger until a hot regular who is secretly a successful novelist falls in love with me or I accidentally spill my drink on a incognito movie star?

Maybe fic has skewed my expectations of reality...

Apropos of nothing, I cooked! Asian style pork chops, sauteed yellow squash and zucchini, with jambalaya rice (granted, the rice was out of a box, but it was rice! I haven't had rice in so long I was becoming less Asian, I swear). And then strawberries for dessert. I really want to make some peach crisp but maybe I'll just wait until fall hits and make apple crisp. Mmm, food is the best.

Still watching the Olympics, still enjoying the hell out of BBC coverage, and still pretty much delighted at seeing awesome athletes be awesome, no matter the nationality or sport. Although Gabby Douglas is made of magic and seeing Zou Kai win gold on floor this morning made my heart clutchy with happiness. :D (At no point did I rewatch 2008 gymnastics just because I needed to see China win things and also Nastia Liukin. Nope. But JFC 2008 was made of amazing.)

A fun game to play with the Olympics called "Olympics or gay porn?"

Here's to Murray beating Federer for gold. Go Team GB! I have faith he can do it. :D

In non-Olympics news, I keep meaning to make a Teen Wolf rec list, but I figure most of you in the fandom have already read them. I may do so at a later date anyway?

For all you DCU fans, here is an adorable comic about the DCU heroes as elementary school kids: Little League. It's ongoing and kind of painfully adorable. Ignores, of course, a lot of canon timelines and whatnot.

For any remaining SasuNaru fans out there, here is an adorable futurefic I read the other day where Sasuke and Naruto have their own genin teams and accidentally date: Baby Animals, Weddings, And Other Things Not Normally Associated With Uchiha Sasuke. It's super cute. I miss my manga fandoms.

It's August! That's killing me a little bit inside. But August means almost September, which means pre-season (please please please happen, Hawks @ Flyers) and then October, which means, finally, hockey season again.

This past week was rough but I get to eat Indian food today. \o/ And wonder if SJM will ever come back. Mimi, I miss you and your stupid boys doing stupid things. I also miss having an excuse to use and improve my Chinese.

This post is all over the place and yet still painfully pointless. My life is pretty boring. Do I win a medal in this?

So! I've been reading a lot, as always, so here are lots of recs for various fandoms:

DCU, Disney, Harry Potter, Hikaru no Go, One Piece, Star Trek XI, and assorted Yuletide fandoms (19 fics total)

Here are some recent incidents from my life:

Cut because brevity may be the soul of wit, but I am not witty. :( I just use lots of capslock to express my feelings. )

Not too much else has been going on with my life. Some work, yes, but that's not terribly exciting. The holidays! They were pretty low-key, honestly, with lots of food and so far no excessive family drama (keeping my fingers crossed on that one!). Mostly I am looking forward to enjoying my coffee or tea (chai lattes! LONDON FOGS! ♥ or, of course, the ever classic Chinese green tea) and lots of reading while I can.

Maybe I'll try writing again, too. I want to try writing in new fandoms! How do people start writing in new fandoms? It's so hard to get over my fear of characterization or the fear that everyone else is doing it better/has done it better, ahhh. Clearly the solution is just to get tipsy first. Then you won't care. (That's how it worked for me in Inception!)

Off to Thailand in a few hours! Will be there a few days and so far my plans involve EATING and SHOPPING (cheap LFC jerseys? hell yeah) and, okay, sure, palaces and temples and possibly the aquarium. :3 While I'm over there having fun, though, I do have a quick question for any friends familiar with Taiwan (which is next week alskgjd):

What's the best place to stay?

- around Shida near Guting MRT station
- Nangang District near the Songshan Train Station & Taipei Metro
- Ximengding District near the Ximen MRT station
- around ZhongShan MRT station
- elsewhere? other suggestions?

Thanks kindly for any suggestions or other pointers! Throw in any amount of advice on places to go, things to do, things not to do, or things to watch out for. I would particularly enjoy any talk of FOOD. /priorities. :D

So I was reading, which happens, and stumbled across some discussion about RPF that made me pause and think.

There have been dozens upon dozens of threads in fandom over the years about how some people can't do RPF at all and some people can do it but only certain ways and other people are like, "Hit me, baby, I can take anything." It's all cool, because it's all a matter of individual taste and so on, but something that's made me curious is the huge difference I've seen in approaches to RPF in Western RPF fandoms vs. Kpop/Jpop RPF fandoms.

For instance, a lot of people in Western RPF fandoms want the family members to be left alone/left out or at least not demonized ("written out of character") in RPF. A lot of people can't read or write about certain people once they've started dating or gotten engaged or married. A lot of people don't mind RPF if it's more gen or friendship or PG romance, but can't do the filthy smut bits, because that feels more violating. Some people can do RPF up until the point they meet the person in question IRL, and then it's no go.

All of these are totally legitimate ways to feel; different strokes for different folks, YMMV, etc. It just made me blanch and realize--

I don't think I've seen anyone in kpop/jpop RPF fandoms even come close to having these issues. )

Life updates! I am at the beach (Emerald Isle, NC) with family and best friend, so there will be drastically less internet time and much more gallivanting about on the sand and water to the point where I've inhaled so much salt I'm probably pickling. Pictures forthcoming at some point; we've rented out a house and it is right on the beach and it is gloriously sunny and beachy (all shades of yellow, orange, pink, and teal) and the water is warm and I am delighting in a change of scenery from the flat-flat-oh-also-flat Midwest.

Things!

- I have managed to lose my left contact lens! I either lost it in my head (unlikely, because my eye is not protesting by turning vividly red and painful) or somehow failed to actually put it in my eye when I sleepily attempted to put in contacts this morning. So that's sad. I'm in glasses for the rest of the trip, it seems, and until I get back to STL. :( BUT IT'S OKAY, MY GLASSES MAKE ME LOOK GEEK-CHIC, OR SOMETHING HIPSTER. WHATEVER. A hipster with a headache; man, I am not used to wearing my glasses for prolonged periods of time anymore...

- I went into paroxysms of joy this morning upon the discovery of JIF Peanut Butter With Honey. The honey is in the peanut butter, you guys. OH MY GOD I AM SO HAPPY, IT IS SO DELICIOUS. I have plans to clutch the jar possessively to my chest and eat from it with a spoon. Who cares if anyone else wants any!

- Inception fandom continues to dominate my life and plans have been made to see it for a fifth time with [livejournal.com profile] efio_47, who has not yet seen it once! She's asked if I've seen it so often I can quote the entire thing or reenact it for her amusement. Sadly, the answer is yes, but only for the Arthur/Eames bits. And, well, basically every single Saito line. :D Surely you see why.

- On this note, my delicious continues to explode from the amazing Inception fics and kinkmeme fills. Still, there are so many good prompts - I kind of want them ALL to be filled. I have managed to fill 2 on my own! I didn't know I could still write! This is what this fandom does to me, okay? (Ruins me, obviously.)

- I am now at peace with my very large and very platonic crush on Adam Lambert. God, he is just so shiny. Sometimes quite literally!

- My life is composed of beachy activities - swimming, waking up to watch the sunrise over the ocean, nearly drowning in salt-water, getting sand everywhere, poring over a puzzles!, reading - and also stereotypical activities that occur when large numbers of Chinese(-American) families get together: massive amounts of eating, mahjong, talking about college, watching the boys play Wii, cards, and I know someone brought a karaoke machine, oh dear god. You know what? I don't so much mind my life being stereotypes like this. :)

- AND ONE LAST THING, NSFW )

ETA: INCEPTION FIC, PRINCESS BRIDE STYLE. Arthur/Eames, lots of team antics, PG. THIS IS ACTUALLY, ACTUALLY, THE MOST AMAZING THING IN THE WORLD. If you don't read it, I will cry. It is just that fucking amazing.

Are they not just the cutest ever? I should save it all for the post-exams pimp post, I know, I know, but I can't resist. See the full interview clip here, but you know you just want to watch Jared attempt to lay one on Jensen over and over...
I know I'm winning y'all over to J2. Don't deny iiiit. House rules are if you deny it, you gotta write me some CinHae or KiHae. Fair trade, I think so!
3/6 exam-type things done, 3 more to go.

It is March 14th! I've gone at least four years in a row without missing a post on this day because it's a pretty important day:

There is much to celebrate! Happy White Day, Pi Day, and w-inds.' 9th anniversary (nine years, wow - wow - and everyone is right, I really like their new album), and 6 years to my [livejournal.com profile] nightengale. ♥♥♥ There are not enough words or heartmarks in the world for me to eloquently express my love today, in the state I'm in, so let us just have pie.

Otherwise today is noteworthy solely for my caving and joining ELFISH (I have no idea what on earth prevented me from joining before) and discovering things like this:

(Sheena, there's a fierce!Wook for you in the background of the last picture - I know you're not looking at anything else. I know you.)

My spring break ends today and it's back to a (long, long) day of classes and work tomorrow, but my descent into a spiral of darkness and woe and gratuitous whining is helped greatly by a few things:

(1) Donghae singing and dancing to I'm Yours
(2) Kyuhyun singing 原谅我 at the Shanghai Encore
(3) And this. )

I should probably eat something today, yeah? Off foraging for coffee and food.
