Supernatural is an American drama/horror television series starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, brothers who hunt demons and other figures of the paranormal. The series, which is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, debuted on September 13, 2005, on The WB, and is now part of The CW's lineup.

My story: I watched S1 and half of S2 live as it was airing, usually freaking myself out because it was dark and I was stupid to watch by myself, in the dark. Hell, I'm pretty sure I watched a few with thyme_hawthorne and we still ended up scared silly. Bloody Mary was freaky as fuck, okay? But then I got distracted by other things, like Ouran and Hikago, and then kpop... Since January of this year though, I've gotten back into lurking actively in the fandom because, omg, there is so much good longfic. I am always a sucker for fanworks. That eventually led me to start keeping up with the show again, at least spoilerwise. I still don't watch the show unless I know what happened and want to see for myself. It's totally possible to watch the show and not be in fandom, but it's also very possible to not watch the show and be in fandom. :3

S1 & S2 involved a lot of urban legends and were very episodic - monster of the week type deal with a background overarching plot. Since S3 onwards, however, the series took a very...apocalyptic turn. I cannot say it's my favoritee, which is why I continue not to watch the show. BUT the apocalyptic storyline means Castiel. And Castiel is amazing because he is played by Misha Collins. Why is that awesome? I will tell you!

It's not, though. It's pretty scary and dramatic and full of angst. Seriously, seriously dark and fucked up. fading_sun_sock WANTS ME TO POINT OUT THAT IT IS CREEPY AS FUCK and a horror-show, because it is. You should not watch it at night...like I did. FML. But that's not to say it doesn't have its hilarious moments. See for yourself!

★ Outstanding and deserving of its own separate embedded video, however, is the episode 4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book,¹ in which the writers of the show actually give a shoutout to fandom. Loving mockery of the huge Wincest contingent; how can you not love it? I loled.

So anyway, Supernatural as a show and fandom do have a lot of problems, particularly with being misogynist - all the female characters are evil or killed off. :| So I acknowledge problems with canon - and holy shit the fandom is home to some batshit insane wank, jfc, but I lurk around for good fic and videos. That's the way to roll! It is a hugely prolific and productive fandom, which is awesome.

I confess, I haven't yet ventured very far into Dean/Cas. I keep trying but I keep getting distracted by Sam/Dean! Anyway, so far I prefer non-AU Dean/Cas because I want to see how authors would make it work (i.e., how they would deal with Sam and the Winchesters' totally unhealthy reliance on/relationship with each other, even if it's non-sexual). This made me weep.

A Winchester Family Christmas, 2010. AKA, Best zombie Christmas ever! Funny and touching at the same time. This was very happy-making and a good read even outside the holiday season.

★ Two Queens by belyste (NC-17, 7000 words)
Dean tries to figure out why so many people think he and Sam are a couple. The answer is…surprising. One of the funniest Sam/Dean fics I have ever read with a fantastically spot-on and hilarious Dean voice. I love this fic so hard. But I tend to love everything by this author. Everything.

☆ American Myth by candle_beck (R, 12000 words)
The Impala gets stolen. Dean and Sam get over themselves to get it back. Crackling with energy and UST and written in a breathlessly beautiful kind of way. Gritty, tense, amazing. This author has this insane grasp of language and manages to be so creative with them in a way that is art without being pretentious or drawing away from the story. And, god, the story. I'd check out everything she writes. :)

★ Under Hill by astolat (NC-17, 9000 words)
Sam and Dean get their memories removed by mischivious elves, and think (through various clues) that they must be lovers. My favorite kind of fic has funny banter, plot, and also hot sex. This fic delivers on all counts. :D Again, reccing pretty much everything here.

☆ Second Glance by tabaqui (R, 4600 words)
John is only ever a second glance to his boys, who see each other first, always first, with little room at the edges of their vision for anybody else. Fucking breathtaking John POV on the Sam/Dean relationship. Stream-of-consciousness, tough formatting, but fucking AMAZING and more than worth the effort. God, I love this fic so hard.

★ Where Angels Fear to Tread by fools_game (PG-13, 6680 words)
Good Omens and SPN crossover! Dean is possessed by – an angel? And this angel calls on a very unlikely ally for help… The crossover I've always dreamed of because, damn, more people should appreciate Good Omens. Very funny and very good voices. Some C/A, some S/D, but mostly read for the funny concept.

☆ The Incestuous Courtship of the Antichrist's Bride by fleshflutter (NC-17, 48000 words)
Sam is trying to become the Antichrist in order to save the world. He has a small army of angels and demons, he has an adoring cult, he has a work of prophecy by Jack Kerouac, and he has Dean. Things are going pretty well until he accidentally signs Dean up as his Beloved Consort, a role that requires sex with the Antichrist on an altar. And that's when things stop going pretty well. Also, the soundtrack to the Apocalypse sucks. Oh my god, this is so funny it hurts. Drop everything and read this immediately - lengthy, plotty, awesome characterizations, touches of angst and schmoop thrown on top of the funny and the hot. This is one of my favorite fandom rereads whenever I'm tired or burned out. Fleshflutter seriously, seriously blows my mind every single time. She's the most tagged author on my delicious bookmarks because I actually am entirely blown away by everything. she. writes.

★ Stopped at the Crossroads by dark_reaction (PG-13, 6000 words)
There are no demons, only night terrors. There are no funerals, only family in-fighting. What would Sam and Dean be like in a world without demons? Partly AU. Um, so much yes. To see an alternate reality of how Sam and Dean might have grown up if their family had been alive and "normal". How they might have turned out and how they might be the same as we know them, and how they might be different. Gorgeous stuff.

☆ Green and Gamboge by sevenfists (R, 5800 words)
Dean, of course, teaches the gremlins how to talk. Crack. So so so so so funny, so wrong, and yet so right. Hilarious and fun and sexy. Also reccing basically everything this author writes. So much to love here, you guys.

There is also a ton of hilarious trope fics here, all of which are done awesomely: genderswap, bodyswap, aliens-made-them-do-it, wingfic, amnesiafic, and so on. I love a huge fandom. *_____*

I, uh, sort of really ship their RL relationships? Well, Jensen's much more than Jared's. Is that weird? (JEN AND DAN ARE GOING TO HAVE THE PRETTIEST BABIES EVER HOLY FUCK. Jen and Dan are so cute. DANNEEL IS SO CUTE. Also hot.)

When Jared desperately needs a date for his brother's wedding, he hires an escort. Jensen's the perfect fake boyfriend, except pretty soon things get a little too real. Based on The Wedding Date. Possibly my favorite J2 AU fic ever. But I confess, I love love love the romantic cliché plots - they are so much fun when done well and this was done phenomenally. It is like the best kind of romcom except with real feelings and hotter boys involved. /beams Seriously, I told you to read everything in the world belyste wrote, right? I say this again specifically towards her J2 AUs - they are epic, plotty, funny as hell, so cute, so hot. There is no way to go wrong with them. (She has a summer camp one, a businessman one, and even one based loosely on S1 of HIMYM! Go go go!)

☆ Do I seem bulletproof to you? by fleshflutter (NC-17, 96000 words)
When he can't find any acting work, Jared takes a job as driver and bodyguard to Jensen, who is an extremely expensive prostitute with a bad habit of attracting crazy people. So, hooker!fic. I have a love/hate relationship with hooker!fic but, you know, you absolutely do not have to have a kink for it to enjoy the hell out of this story. Everything fleshflutter writes is just so good. And this is not bitter or broken at all - it's a refreshing take on an old storyline with awesome awesome voices and great plot. So hot, so hurty, and a happy ending - because I can't live without my happy endings.

★ Sweet Dreams Remain by dark_reaction (NC-17, 8300 words)
Jensen is a bartender who has the shit luck of falling for a married man, or the cocktail waitress who ended Jared and Sandy's fabulous marriage. Painful, oh god so achy, and it made me cry because I am that way. But this was a great AU with a great use of cocktail drinks and, oh, so different from so many J2 AUs. It dares to go there. I love it.

☆ Lost and Found by mediaville (NC-17, 47000 words)
Jensen Ackles is a shy, overweight songwriter whose body issues have prevented him from forming any real personal connections, and at thirty, he’s still unsure of his sexuality, and still a virgin. But when he signs up for an experimental obesity research program, he meets Jared Padalecki, a stunningly sexy fitness guru who slowly but surely changes Jensen’s life. Emotionally exhausting because I seriously sobbed my way through this fic, but it is so fucking good. It's painful to read because it's brutally honest with Jensen's feelings and insecurities - but it's hopeful, inspiring, and uplifting at the same time. Give this fic a chance. It is so rare to see something like this addressed in fandom and then handled so well. God, so much love.

★ Keepsake by indysaur (R, 19900 words)
Based loosely on Disney/Pixar's Wall-E. Very AU. Jensen finds Jared. And then Mei sobbed. I do this a lot, okay? But the language here is stark and minimal and utterly beautiful. She manages to create this whole new world with so few words, with so many emotions. It's painfully lonely at times but worth it to see how Jared and Jensen get to know each other, how things happen. The ending made my heart clutch up but it's not, I promise, an unhappy ending. So innovative, so original, so freaking amazing. And you can definitely read and enjoy this without having seen WALL-E, promise.

☆ Next Man Up by timewillbe (NC-17, 97000 words)
Football AU. Armed with strength, size and instinctive talent, Jared Padalecki is the first round draft pick for the faltering Dallas Cowboys. In a league ruled by money, celebrity and ego, where the roster changes week to week and injuries aren't so much a risk as a fact of life, Jared must prove himself capable of leading one of the NFL's most glamorous and controversial teams back to glory. And in the process, must deal with his teammates' potentially career-ending secrets and his own burgeoning, confusing relationship with Ackles. OH MY GOD FOOTBALL AU. OH MY GOD THIS MADE ME SO HAPPY. The angtagonism and the UST, oh my god, the technical details of football yes yes yes. I LOVE THE TINY RESEARCHED DETAILS. You don't have to know anything about football to enjoy this because she tells the story so well. I can do nothing but make happy faces at this fic and how awesome this fandom is for all these lengthy and incredibly detailed AUs. :D

Non-AU
★ Cohabitation by indysaur (PG-13, 4240 words)
A little bit of fic because who can resist Jared and Jensen living in the same effing house. Oh, to be a fly on that wall. A sort of ode. :) This author has really got down the art of boyish behavior and bickering and banter. It is a joy to read, and a nice break if you're looking for something different from romcom.

☆ Not Moving Mountains by audarose (NC-17, 12100 words)
Jensen has mono and Jared takes care of him. Entirely feel-good, lots of comfort-touching, and not overbearing amounts of schmoop. Just enough to keep you feeling warm and fuzzy.

★ The Truth About Heaven by destina (NC-17, 20550 words)
The show is ending and Jared and Jensen are figuring some things out. Beautifully slow build, achy in all the right places. It's poignant and bittersweet and moving - but at the same time tense and hot and wonderful. I don't know how to use words to describe this. /waves hands around in the air. Just go read it, seriously.

☆ Spooning is a gateway drug by beckaandzac (NC-17, 4000 words)
Post season 4, Jared is wiped. Jensen decides he needs cuddling. Then there is 4000 words of cuddling. And some sexytimes. Starts out adorable and ends up scorching hot. I have a weakness for cuddling boys, okay? Especially when it turns into something more. Forget the sex, I'm just here for the incredible amounts of sexual tension. Unf, my favorite.

★ If you're into it by mediaville (NC-17, 6750 words)
Jensen’s a delicate flower/soggy kitten and Jared’s good with his hands (and his cock) and saves the day. First-time. Kinda sorta h/c, if you squint. Mostly just porn. She says it's mostly just porn but what she doesn't say that the characterization and voices are spot-on, the storytelling is fantastic, the mood is amazing, the smut mind-meltingly hot, and it's also humorous! Win-win-win for everything!

And because I can't seem to pick a particular fic out of what they've written, go read all the J2 by longsufferingly and sneaky_sena too. They've both got different but hilarious and hot college AUs going on (fuck yeaaaahh) and also very funny, very awesome other fics. :D And also go check out my delicious for less porn-centric fics. Damn this fandom has a lot of NC-17. Granted, the lengthy ones are primarily plotty with a few NC-17 scenes, but still. The lower-rated fics are also lovely.

I've actually been pretty neutral? I've been watching since...er...*counts how many seasons back* A long time. Obviously was not blind to Dean and Sam, but never really touched fandom so much? I love Castiel to pieces, and the dynamic, so that's definitely a motivation to me... But I've really enjoyed the J2 and stuff that you've recced to me before, so... I guess I'm still finding where I'll end up. XD I will be equal opportunity for a while. XD

It's interesting because I was all prepared to jump onto the Sam/Dean ship when I first started watching SPN. I told myself to go find fanfic and I did, but for one reason or another... I could never get myself to read. Then Castiel showed up in my life and swept me away. So blame everything on Cas/MISHA FUCKING COLLINS.

BUT J2 really is adorable from what I've seen. I'm not sure I'm ready for the porny fic right now... So I'm wondering if you have something leaning more towards gen? :D Maybe? I'M EXCITED FOR THE J2 VIDS THOUGH. THAT I CAN HANDLE.

Man this fandom is porny... I'll keep a lookout for more PG J2 fics - I know they exist! Maybe I've just been bad at keeping track of them. I'd point you towards longsufferingly's J2 though. Tends towards cute and funny and not-porny. :D

There are about 250 different J2 fics, and then a miscellanious assortment of shorter fics categorized by author (ie porny oneshots). & I am very pick about what I read so everything in there is just about golden. Upped it so if my computer ever crashes (and/or the author delete old stuff) I have all my J2 ♥

They have had to deal with more than their fair share of crazy fandom, like that girl who threw herself off the stairs onto Jensen at some con. alskdhf what the hell. But then they also get to see things like SPN's version of Candy Mountain on YT lol.

Sigh, yeah, most of my flist ships Dean/Cas. I have tried but the Sam/Dean stole me away since S1 and I apparently cannot go back on that. They are so epic to me! :D

J2 is so adorable, yes omg. And yes they are both married and also entirely adorable with their respective wives. It is really just so CUTE.

this is kinda late but i figured since i dislike uneven numbers i'd rise the comment number to 60. also because 59 is never as good as 60. :) i read this awesome wonderful amazing huge large big thing around the time it was posted, and i've come back to it a few times after that as well. i love it, i really do. ♥

so i have these friends who are kinda spn crazy, and they've been pimping it out to me from the moment i got to know them. but all i could ever see was INCESTINCESTINCEST and HORRORHORRORHORROR. i'm not big on horror/drama/blood/shooting things/nightmares/generally scary things (i hide behind my hand whenever i happen to watch something even remotely scary) so i was really unsure about watching spn. then i stumbled upon this. and i just had to watch a few of the j2 videos, and some funny stuff from spn, and then some convids, and then i watched "the monster at the end of this book" (the spn ep and a video of a guy reading the book) and then suddenly i found myself tweeting about j2 and downloading podfics and watching as many spn related things i could get my hands on as long as it wasn't a real ep/anything scary.

then i thought, "you know what, screw my fear, i'll watch it in daylight" and promptly watched the pilot. it took some time after that for me to build up the courage to watch a few more eps but i did it at last and now i'm trying to finish season 3, 4 and 5 before the 6th's starting running. i've even calculated how many eps i should watch /day in order to finish in so and so many days.

so what's this got to do with you? well, there's the fact that if you would never have done this pimp post or whatever, and if i would never had read it, it would have taken a lot more time before i got around to appreciate j2, supernatural and sam/dean (yes i got around to liking that one at last; i figured since i've always been fascinated by stories of step siblings falling in love maybe real brothers wouldn't be that much of a hardship to learn to appreciate, at least in this case). i guess what i'm trying to tell you is, thank you. :) i really appreciate this post. like really really appreciate it. ♥

You have no idea. :D I am so happy to hear that this post sort of got you interested in J2 and SPN, because while the fandom and show are far from perfect, they are also highly entertaining and produce lots and lots of good fanworks (and laughter and porn and so on). Obviously, don't feel obligated to like Sam/Dean just because it's the most popular ship, but it's cool if you're giving it a shot!
