da da daaan!

Hello, hello - this is the promised "introduction to Mei" post I said I'd be writing for all you new people (w-why are there so many of you?). Also, any old flisters who are curious! Really this is not that in depth and talks more about my fandom interests (I have a gazillion) than Who I Am As A Human Being, but I figure we have to leave some mystery to the relationship, otherwise you'll all get terribly bored and abandon me.

One thing to know about me: I am a list-maker! I love lists! So I made a list of things I'd talk about in this intro post, but I'm probably still forgetting things. Oh well.

(1) A little about my background

I'm Mei! It sounds like "May". In sixth grade, there was a kid in my class named Kyle May and my friends, being sixth graders, helpfully informed me that if I should ever marry him, my name would be Mei May. Ah, sixth grade.

I'm Chinese and I talk about that sometimes. I've a little brother, who is 14 this year, and who is totally ridiculous, and who gets talked about sometimes too. (He is a geek, which I approve of, and likes cosplay, which makes me laugh, and has the kind of social life I only dreamed of at his age. Weekend parties? Dating? It's like our parents were abducted sometime between when I was 14 and chained to my desk having crises about what I'd major in college - no, seriously, I did - and when he came along and decided that dating a 7th grader while in 8th grade while possibly harboring a crush on another girl was totally the cool thing to do.)

I'm 23! This mostly means I'll wail about how old I am all the time. All the time. I'm in law school, which I will refrain from saying much about, except to complain when it is killing me a little more than usual (because it's always killing me generally).

I graduated from UNC and I bleed (depending on the time of year) Carolina blue. :) (When it's not college basketball season, I may bleed Liverpool red. Just saying.)

The strange thing is that I almost never wear my hair down normally. Yet I pick these pictures!

(2) Stuff, which you might see here

If I talked about everything I liked, I'd still be talking when the world ended in 2012, so let's just talk about stuff you might see on this journal!

+ ANIME/MANGA.
In no particular order, things I still love: Gundam Wing, Death Note, Ouran Host Club, Hikaru no GO ♥♥ (probably my favorite, if pressed), Here is Greenwood, Perfect Girl Evolution/Wallflower, Prince of Tennis (...you don't want to know how much I wrote for this fandom), anything by CLAMP, FAKE, a ton of trashy BL, Hana Kimi, Kimi ni Todoke, Bakuman, Slam Dunk, FMA, Digimon (seasons 1&2 only!)

+ BOOK FANDOMS.
If I talk about it here, it will most likely be the Macdonald Hall series by Gordon Korman, the Borderlands series by Lorna Freeman, the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, or the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Also, Good Omens! Oh, and, you know - Harry Potter.

+ TV/MOVIE FANDOMS.
Supernatural (I don't even watch this show...), Merlin, Twilight (...I went through a period where I read fic for it okay? THE MOVIE INCEPTED ME), Gossip Girl (I had a two-day affair), Star Trek Reboot, Inception, Sherlock, apparently Smallville (and however that crosses over with DCU)

+ MUSIC FANDOMS.
American Idol 8 RPS (HELLO KRADAM WHO STOLE MY HEART), kpop sometimes (Super Junior primarily, touching on SNSD and SHINee - you also definitely don't want to know how much I fic I produced here over 2.5 years), very unlikely but possibly jpop (KAT-TUN, Arashi)

+ SPORTS.
Footballers, FOOTBALL, HELLO I WILL TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL A LOT (LIVERPOOL, SPAIN ♥ - with other biases, but those two are where my heart lies), tennis! (usually only during grand slams because I have no attention span), college basketball when it's college basketball season

+ OTHER.
Meta! I love to meta when I'm not too lazy (contradiction in terms considering how lazy I always am), RPS in general, usually for actors of shows I'm already paying attention to! Makes sense, right?

+ PORN.
THE INTERNET IS FOR PORN. So there will be talk of that here. Shield your eyes as you deem necessary!

Also, you will see endless whining about writing. It is part of my writing process. :(

(3) Stuff, which you will probably not see here

+ TV shows.
I don't watch TV unless it's for sports. I am abysmal at watching shows, even if they're available online. :( I'M SORRY, YOU GUYS. You can talk about them if you want, but I won't have much to say!

+ Music.
I adore music but I have no real standards and can tune out everything as background white noise while I focus on whatever I'm doing. I am the opposite of a music snob. I loathe music snobbery to an extent where I have ranted about it in the past and will probably rant about it again in the future. This is also probably a little kneejerk defensive because I totally don't listen to what music snobs consider "real" music or "real" bands, that are indie and ~*~quality~*~ and not mainstream.

+ Politics.
It might make appearances very occasionally (usually in my meta), but generally I steer clear of doing that here.

+ My RL.
At least, not much of it besides a few random gripes or sharings when inanimate objects decide to attack me and bruise me for no reason. I keep my RL stuff (lots of boring things, mostly, and rambling summaries of my day, and lots of ranting and grumbling) on my RL journal. But in case you think that I do nothing but fangirl, be assured that I do other things too! I just...compartmentalize. Fandom is where I try to de-stress, so that is why I like to keep things happy and flaily with no drama or wank (or excessive angst).

Occasionally other things out of my dark past may rear their ugly heads, but you will have to stick around if you ever want to see for yourself. :3

But I realize this post was mostly about fandom stuff. In the interests of facilitating more prying into my life (hey, why not?), let's have a Five Things meme! Here's how it works:
1. You post in a comment a request for five things you want to know about me (e.g., five movies you love, or five ways you eat eggs, or five reasons you ship this ship, and so on).
2. I reply.
3. ???
4. Profit!

MEI MEI. I am so excited for this post, you have no idea \o/

First, how are so you cute? I WOULD LIKE TO PUT YOU IN MY POCKET AND KEEP YOU THERE FOREVER OKAY. I WILL LET YOU HAVE WINE AND COOKIES. AND PORN. LOTS OF PORN.

I just...compartmentalize. Fandom is where I try to de-stress, so that is why I like to keep things happy and flaily with no drama or wank (or excessive angst).

I could have written these exact words myself. LIKE, FOR REAL. I deal with unpleasant crap in RL because I have to, so when I come to fandom I just want to flail and squee and CAPSLOCK UNTIL I COLLAPSE. ALSO: PORN.

And, as for top five, I should like to know your five favorite things about Inception fandom. Except... that is totally a fannish thing and not me prying into your RL, so you could also tell me five places you have visited and loved :D

Also, you should know that my flist is infinitely brighter with you on it and I am so glad that I found you. NOW, INTO MY POCKET YOU GO ♥♥♥

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha I have been misleading, Bina, I am really not that exciting - I am just all over the place in fandom so I always have something to talk about! :D

Happy-making is all I need from fandom. Porn is happy-making. Capslocking with awesome people is happy-making! Seriously, RL drags us down enough - why would we want that in fandom? /smushes you and rolls you over with hearts ♥♥

Oh god, top favorite things in Inception fandom....

1. AMAZING PEOPLE LIKE YOU :D - I know it sounds cheesy but seriously I would not be enjoying this fandom even half as much if I didn't have lovely people to flail with (and talk about Earl with, heheh)
2. TOM HARDY - need I say more?
3. ...JGL too; I did not appreciate him properly before this, there was only 3rd Rock - now I know better! :D
4. the way fandom has really developed Mal and Ariadne into lovely, full characters beyond just what canon gave us. Because, honestly speaking, the movie was not terribly kind to either of them. Yay fandom for making more of our female characters!
5. the range of fic for this fandom - from cute AUs to badass mission fics in canon to cuddling schmoop to AUs where they are assassins - EVERYTHING IS WONDERFUL. So productive, so prolific, so much talent! There is a fic for everyone! You can definitely find something to enjoy.

/SITS IN YOUR POCKET AND NIBBLES ON YOUR FINGERS!

[identity profile] black-goose.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the hyperactive gayness of kpop fandom gives everyone a fic writing boost and then it usually fades out and you're left sitting there like "woah, how much did I write?" ...and I'm going to refrain from making a sex metaphor there.

top 5 favourite characters in Harry Potter, and why.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's a good point actually - the hyperactiveness, I mean! Because kpop is not a closed canon, stuff keeps happening all the time, which means there's always new material to inspire new fics! And then it all adds up and you're like "...whoa."

Hmmmm, I've never really laid this out. Let's see. (WOW, BLOCKS OF TEXT, SORRY. /puts in some paragraph breaks)

1. Draco Malfoy - because I like morally ambivalent characters! And, actually, mostly because of [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales/mistful/Maya's old HP fics. And then the fandom helped me develop the rest of my interest. Favorite is easily, easily Draco.

2. Harry Potter - it would be hard to ship H/D if I hated Harry and I don't. I think he's interesting because he's the character we know most intimately, by default because the books are in his POV. I really like to see fandom authors flesh him out believably though, or extrapolate into what kind of person he'd be in later years.

3. Hermione Granger - I love her, even though she is far from perfect or sweet or all things good. She has done some truly heinous things and she has, in her own way, her very set moral judgments of other people. But I love that she's smart and I love that she is sort of awkward with relationships and, god, all of my opinions are less colored by canon than fanon, haha. I just want fandom to treat her nice and explore all the things she could be, for better or for worse.

4. Luna Lovegood - Seriously, I make angry faces at people who don't love her. Not really, but she's just...whimsical, yes, but underneath that such a genuinely lovely person from what we've seen. I think people should embrace people who don't think like them more often and not just dismiss them out of hand because they seem "strange". She has imagination and empathy and she can recognize Harry when he's invisible!

5. Narcissa Malfoy - I never loved the Maurauders the way some people do, I don't share a fascination with Snape or the Blacks, sorry. I love Jason Isaacs as Lucius but Lucius himself does not make me love him. Narcissa, however, Narcissa I love. Because she is cool and hardly Good or on the Side of Light, but she is still under that a mother and a sister and someone who will go so far and risk so much underneath her chilly, beautiful exterior. I love her, I do. I love her seeing handled with subtlety and care in fandom. ♥

HI MEI HI. I love seeing these posts even though I technically knew these things? They are so much fun.

As for the Five Things: five places you enjoy shopping! (I'm in the mood to talk about clothing. Don't ask me why.)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
hehe yes this is mostly for people who aren't all in-the-know via my RL journal. HOW WELL WE KNOW EACH OTHER NOW, isn't it awesome? (you should post more often so I may pry into your private life too ♥)

Ooh okay, let's see-- I'm going to take this as "five places I enjoy clothes-shopping" because really I enjoy shopping on Amazon or Half.com or...bookstores, haha.

1. Charlotte Russe! THEY HAVE THINGS MY SIZE. I LIKE BUYING PANTS FROM THEM. Plus their dresses are super cute and fairly cheap and their sales rack is AMAZING if you make the time to go through it.
2. Aeropostale - mostly for comfortable basics like tanks and shorts and things you can layer!
3. Kohl's - I also love their sales rack, yes, okay.
4. hmm I like Forever 21 okay, I guess, but it is...really hard to navigate when I'm in the store, because so much of it is clothes I would never wear... So finding the things I would wear in between all the other stuff can be daunting.
5. OVERSEAS... China/Korea, haha. \o/

I also love looking at Modcloth and YesStyle and but oh god, so pricey. ;_;

I adore you. <3 :D Just wanted to let you know!

Five of your favorite desserts!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The adoration is mutual! :3

God, this might be hard because I don't have a huge sweet tooth, or it might be easier because that limits the kinds of desserts I love...

1. green tea ice cream, oh my god
2. New York style cheesecake
3. that Korean dessert (I never remember where it's called) that is a fish-shaped ice cream sandwich with vanilla ice cream and red bean, mmm (http://www.uglyfood.com/2007/07/03/korean-red-bean-fish-sandwich-ice-cream/).
4. sweet nian gao (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GhxgrlPEUTI/R60FgsyIu2I/AAAAAAAABPE/yX86PTYXLCU/s400/redbeanniangao1.jpg)
5. EGG TARTS! Do these count as dessert?

Huh, I just realized that most of these are Asian, haha. I don't like things too sweet!

NO, NO THIS IS GREAT. I ALSO LIKE LEARNING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE - I am only self-absorbed most of the time, not all of the time. :D

1) I LOVED DIGIMON SO MUCH. I totally shipped Tai/Matt...years after I watched the show. I don't know how it crept on me afterwards but, god, Taito still makes me ♥ even now!
3) DDDD: That sounds painful and unfun. I hope it is feeling better! I'm a bit sore but that's mostly from stretching a lot in yoga yesterday, which is considerably less bloody.
5) OH PLEASE TALK TO ME ABOUT FOOTBALL, ALL THE TIME. I am so sad I only have one friend I can talk to irl about football and she's moving away from me next week. :( Everyone else is separated from me by such great distance! I make do with what I can online...

1. YOU
2. YOU

...OKAY, NO, I'M KIDDING. Here is my real list:

1. Glenn Beck
2. Ann Coulter
3. Sarah Palin
4. Rush Limbaugh
5. ...Xuanzang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xuanzang) (from Journey to the West, since it seems like everyone wanted a piece of him, lol)

The problem of course is thath I'd first have to be stuck with those people stranded in the mountains. But at least I would not feel as badly if I was forced to eat someone to survive...

...you are sitting on a turtle, Mei. That is not fair. I think I died of the cute.

Oh, and all those anime/manga fandoms. So many of which I share or once shared. GUNDAM WING, my gateway drug. CLAMP. HIKARU NO GO. TRASHY BL. Just the other day I went and reread my old yaoi collection and I laughed and I swooned and I wept crystalline tears of joy.

MACDONALD HALL. Staple of my childhood! Bruno and Boots were my heroes, and Cathy and Diane too.

...which leads to my question: 5 books you loved as a child!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I was at the aquarium! It was a statute statue (holy crap law typos...twice...) right outside. :D

YES, SO MUCH NOSTALGIA FOR OUR ROOTS. I obviously pay slightly less attention to them nowadays but I will never stop holding them dear in my heart. I realized I forgot Perfect Girl Evolution/Wallflower though! It is SO HILARIOUS. Also wrt BL manga, I am just waiting for the day Yamano Ayane finishes her freaking Viewfinder series. It's been so long since I've lost track of what's going on.

OH MY GOD, YOU LOVED MACDONALD HALL TOO? EVERYONE SHOULD LOVE THEM. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE IN THE WORLD. Sometimes I feel like I've read every single Bruno/Boots fic in existence. :( Tiny fandom, why are you tiny?

God I read so much as a kid and loved so much. These are in no particular order:

1. The Giving Tree (makes me cry every single time - I cannot read this in public; it's just embarrassing for everyone)
2. I Want To Go Home! by Gordon Korman askdhfj <333 (and the entire Macdonald Hall series)
3. Ella Enchanted was my favorite for ages
4. original Winnie-the-Pooh/Paddington bear series - they're both about bears, I can combine them to save room, right?
5. and a super old one? From kindergarten, oh I loved the Mrs Piggle-Wiggle box set I had. 8D

I could talk about children's books for ages and ages, N. :( I think I love it more than YA novels and I love YA novels more than books that are more age-appropriate. I WONDER WHY.

Oh my god you have no idea how thrilled I am to find out more people know of (!!) and love Macdonald Hall. :DDDD Everyone should love those books (except maybe the last one, I've always been ~iffy on the last one). AND OH THE FICS FOR IT ARE SO GOOD. ♥ (this is my MH icon, heh)

Hmmmm.

1. TELEPORTATION. Seriously, how come science hasn't advanced far enough to make this possible yet?
2. Invisibility - though it'd also be really problematic so I feel like only select people should be able to access this power. Like...me. :D
3. Time travel - I admit it, I want to see what the regency era was like. AND ALL OTHER ERAS. How amazing would it be, seriously.
4. to cover all my bases: MAGIC!!!
5. and...the world so many slash-writers assume when writing their fics: that it doesn't matter what gender someone identifies as, the only that matters is the love between two people. It's an easy way to not have to deal with homophobia in fic, but it's something I wish the entire world would just accept as a baseline belief. :( What is there to fight about?

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to take "favorite" as "stuff I wear all the freaking time that are super comfortable and also do not make me look like I crawled out of a cave". :D I like stuff that can be matched with other things!

In no particular order:

1. the green and purple plaid dress in the above picture :D
2. a pair of high-waisted white shorts (http://i25.tinypic.com/2mdkyo3.jpg) that are...really short, but make my legs look long (which is always a plus when you barely hit 5'1"!) and go with - oh, everything
3. a red empire-waisted shirt (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs003.snc1/4147_689963839798_2718708_41544230_3782264_n.jpg) with puffy sleeves (please ignore the extraneous people in this D: how awkward)
4. um, pleated (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs455.snc3/26044_1298692759860_1606620479_30946310_7270614_n.jpg) black skirt (http://i31.tinypic.com/5d9u8n.jpg)!
5. ngl, this pink Aeropostale hoodie (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs455.snc3/26044_1298668239247_1606620479_30946151_5268802_n.jpg) WHICH IS SO WARM AND FLUFFY :3

Hmm, a lot of this is Asian haha. Which I guess makes sense, since that's what I grew up with and what reminds me of home:

1. beef noodle soup mm
2. pork and thousand year old egg congee
3. buffalo wings
4. my mom's chicken soup!
5. ahhhh I don't know, homemade bubble milk tea is really really good too :D?

ahhh these are hard. Let me just do one for now: places I'd like to visit!

1. SPAIN, ANYWHERE
2. LONDON
3. PARIS
4. TOKYO
5. RIO, BRASIL

I REALLY HAVEN'T BEEN ANYWHERE EXCEPT N AMERICA + SOME OF EAST ASIA. :( So many so many places I could visit!

alksdghfj OH GOD I TOTALLY FORGOT TO TELL YOU...I got that... Or, my parents say I did. 8D I have a package at home. THANK YOUUU. ♥♥

Being a tiny Chinese girl myself, my question to you will be: Five Favourite Things About Being Chinese/Chinese culture

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Chinese food (probably because I eat it so much) but holy crap do I love Chinese New Year. And mahjong. Please say you know mahjong. I love it, even if I keep losing money at it.

askgdhfj ahh oh my god, of course I know mahjong. I judge all the Chinese people who don't! They are missing out on hours of fun hahaa. Though we don't usually gamble with it here because...well, not enough people know it/are good at it, and also we are all poor broke students, lol.

Hmmm five favorite things about being Chinese...

1. Chinese New Year - I love that it's a huge celebration, that there's so much delicious food, that I can celebrate no matter where in the world I am, that it represents this entire huge heritage/culture that I'm tied to
2. the food, the food oh my god I love Chinese food :(
3. shopping 8D
4. the language - I bitch and moan about it but really I love that it's one of the most difficult languages ever and I wish I knew it more fluently. I love that it's so pretty when written, love that it's different (alphabet? what alphabet? fuck that shit) and that it's the basis of so many other written languages, historically (Korean, Japanese, etc).
5. This is so shallow hahah but SJM. Because being Chinese means I get to understand their songs and their shows, unsubbed! :D

i'm aware that we have never spoken before, but i stumbled across your kpop fic journal and then it sort of just led to here. /creeps. haha.

i like that you are occasionally a tar heel because i bleed carolina blue year round (except for during football season)! which of course leads me to my question: what are your five favorite things about chapel hill?

That is totally okay - HI!

Oh Carolina, I love you so, even if "in the real world" no one but Carolina and Duke alums get what the hate is all about. All we get are funny looks and people backing away when we start ragging on the other team/school, lol.

Five favorite things about Chapel Hill, hmm... In no particular order:

1. Alpine! 8D Because I worked their for years and ate so much food from there and now they have expanded their selection! I miss it. It's the only place I can eat bagels anymore; everywhere else I just make faces and talk about how two years at a bagel shop has made me never want to eat bagels again...
2. Bull's Head bookstore. It's just the right size to completely and utterly distract me with all the books I want to buy and think about buying but don't end up buying because, money, I don't have it.
3. Lime & Basil - I end up eating there almost every single time I visit Chapel Hill. It's so good!
4. Franklin St after a big basketball win. Nothing like it. ♥
5. the fact that Chapel Hill is sort of the epitome of a college town - self-contained little liberal bubble edging into the hippie-town that is Carborro. I loved it, love that UNC's gorgeous campus is there. It's really a lovely college experience that you might not appreciate fully until after you're gone, hah.
