never underestimate the lengths to which fans will go

A: I love you so much and I wanted to show that, so this year for Valentine's Day - and your 8888th day alive—
B: I can't believe you counted...
A: —I bought you something to prove the depth of my love - a star!
B: A what?
A: Yes, a star, and I have named it B ★ LOVE because, you see, there is your name, and a star, and the word love, which encompasses everything I am trying to say with this gift!
B: Oh, er, I see that.
A: I LOVE YOU.
B: Great, a star. How useful. I've...always wanted one...
A: You are my shining star, you see. And my love will last forever, like this star, burning brightly into the darkness!
B: You know stars eventually explode, right?

[livejournal.com profile] meiface: yes, the fans bought donghae a star for valentine's day and his 8888th day alive.
[livejournal.com profile] coley_merrin: perhaps for his 9999th day alive they can get him a telescope big enough to find it.

[identity profile] supercinderelli.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
omg I'm sorry but this had me smiling and laughing eventually D:

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Laughter is good! Poor Donghae, I wonder what he will do with a star. Now there's something that's hard to regift!

[identity profile] supercinderelli.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
errrrr.. I'm thinking about the same thing.. but I love what you said about giving him a telescope so he could somehow find it :)))

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
lol oh that is all [livejournal.com profile] coley_merrin's wit. ♥

[identity profile] mardigrasmaven.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Pfffffft. What they wrote was really thoughtful but I can't help but die laughing because of how it was condensed into the A/B message. XD

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of those well-intentioned gifts that can objectively from a distance look a bit... Well, "what were you thinking, exactly?" is probably the nicest way to put it.

If you look up the fans' gift for Geng's birthday this year (a fanmade MV to the fansong "Wings of Love"), it's similar. Really, really sweet concept, but oh my god the execution. I cringed so hard in secondhand embarrassment while watching that video.

[identity profile] mardigrasmaven.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Actually.. imo... to give HAN GENG a star would make more sense... cuz... you know. 10 Heavenly Stems and all that. XD

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure the Gengfans will get around to it. They are so hardcore, trufax.

[identity profile] mardigrasmaven.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, they'd prolly buy his ass the SUN and be like "It's called 'Geng' now. Get with it." I'd be behind that shit. I always was a little mad that all the other suns get names like Betelgeuse and ours is just... the Sun. >_>

[identity profile] mardigrasmaven.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
And can I just say that if no other life forms in space do this, they must think us humans so pretentious to be naming stars that don't belong to us after other Earthlings.

[identity profile] nyw.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I am whimpering slightly in my chair with hysteria right now, which is hilarious cause I'm surrounded by people. Thankfully they are used to me wailing at my laptop screen.

I approve of the telescope comment.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
I like documenting the wit of my friends and pretending I live in a sassy romcom or fic written by Maya, where everyone is funny at the right times and never left thinking, two days later, of a quip they could've used.

[identity profile] nyw.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh. If only life were like that. *_*

Which reminds me that I downloaded the .pdf compendium Maya put up before she had to pull off her fic off the net... and still haven't read it.

Also technically stars are already exploded /geek

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
You should! I should reread her stuff too! Or...do my work...

Haha, but quips are only witty when they are short, not when they are lengthy and scientifically-correct and go on about the different types of stars and their different types of deaths and also, maybe, black holes.

Perhaps it could've gone like this:
A: You are my shining star!
B: Are you calling me gassy?

butting in~ :D

[identity profile] mayawelstead.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I...I haven't read it yet either xD Maya's pdf. I have, however, finally finished her book only to realise book 2 is already out, omg. /o\ fail, me.

Re: butting in~ :D

[identity profile] nyw.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm re-downloading it now, apparently I don't have it on this harddisk /o\

Wait hang on her books are out?! Omg I am so far behind on fandom.

Re: quips true, true 8D Do your work! I need to get started on mine argh

[identity profile] mayawelstead.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
OMG xD LAUGHED SO HARD AT THIS~ also lol the telescope idea is a definite plan.

How does one even buy a star? is there some sort of star catalogue?

...Doesn't Heechul also have a star? xD that his fan named after him or something?

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
hahahaha, I just googled it, and yep, Heenim has his own star too (http://www.kpoplive.com/2010/08/26/heechul-gets-his-own-star/)! This is hilarious. I want CinHae star fic now. I don't even know how that would work. CinHae in space? CinHae arguing over whose star is cooler?

Apparently it is not that hard to buy a star (http://www.starregistry.com/). Or at least pay to name one.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Katamari AU with CinHae stars, lmao.

[identity profile] mardigrasmaven.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
OMFG. Someone just had a stroke of genius.
ext_9946: (discworld: wut)

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
this fic is going to have to involve one of them approaching collapse and making gratuitous references to supermassive black hole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tugqHunwDA).

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
SADLY I DO NOT EVEN KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT KATAMARI TO WRITE THIS. IT WOULD JUST BE LIKE ~SPARKLE ROLL SPARKLE ROLL ROLL ROLL INTO SPACE~

[identity profile] mayawelstead.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol perhaps one day SuJu will be a constellation or something! Someone should work on this! :O
FIC YES PLEASE *nudges* xD

Huh. :/ Who knew.

Been busy packing up my room for the first time ever. D: I don't want to leave home yet! I'm not ready for Uni! OMG *freaks out*. ;_; I love my bed and my room and my Mum andandand. I love my Dad too but I see him less. ;_; Tomorrow is too soon!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to write happy crack fic but then I found an old cyworld entry of Heechul's about Hankyung and now I'm just depressed. ;____;

Good luck packing and moving, omg! You will be fine! It will take some adjustment but, uh, just think - at least you don't have hundreds of ELF shouting you down? Any transition's gotta be easier compared to that! ...I'm so helpful, lol. But really, hwaiting! It will always be a little scary the first time, but it will always get better too.

[identity profile] mayawelstead.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
;______; That is unfortunate!

Thank you! :D I'm mostly packed now, I just need to go through my bedside drawers for things I'm taking... and somehow fit everything into my car~ xD You are helpful! :) You've been through all this and more~ ♥

Talk to you from the other side, lol. xD

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
XD well it is kind of cute and keeps them off the streets!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, not always! They still manage to find the time to stalk flight schedules and line up in the airport three-rows deep. I'm honestly terrified by how effective fans can be when they take it upon themselves to organize.

[identity profile] ch-ar-me.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
uhh. so johnny weir has a whole lot of russian stans. one is also an astronomer. who discovered a small planet back in 95. who had said asteroid named after johnny weir for his birthday last year.

I'M JUST SAYING.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
SCREAM LMAO

Why are fans like this?!

[identity profile] catskilt.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO XD

Just remembered something, isn't it a possibility that the star isn't even there anymore since the light that we see from the star has been travelling for a million light years or something?
Edited 2011-02-08 16:41 (UTC)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually! But I suppose that's true for any and all the stars we "see". /makes a crack about Cassiopeia

[identity profile] papered.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, my god. they actually got him a star? alksdkajk

..............

B: Great, a star. How useful. I've...always wanted one... hehehe this sounds like something that might be out of a Maya fic. (actually, your whole post.)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they registered a name for one, though evidently no scientist ever pays any attention to this ridiculousness, so it's really just the gesture. I mean, what do you even do with a star? You can't visit, you can't claim ownership, you can't exert any sort of useful right over it...

........................the fuck?

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My exact first reaction, haha. I love you!
ext_9946: (discworld: not that strange)

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I love you too! but let's get back to the point: wouldn't it have made more sense to buy him some sea? I'm sure it must be possible; my friend's dad bought her a title for her birthday and now she owns a sliver of land up in Scotland (probably the only reason why it was affordable).

she can't do anything with it, though, so possibly comparable to a star.
Edited 2011-02-09 00:14 (UTC)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
can you buy someone a sliver of sea? I feel like this might run into international treaty issues or something. @_@ at least with land, you know it's just one country's land.
ext_9946: (Default)

[identity profile] forochel.livejournal.com 2011-02-18 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I ... have no idea. why not? cordon it off with a couple of buoys?

[identity profile] mayawelstead.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
off topic, but is Pluto not a planet anymore? :/ Last time I was taught about the solar system it was definitely a planet. NOW I FEEL OLD. D:

[identity profile] sapphynashi.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thing like that would never even occur to me.

Stars eventually exploding kalhfka A+

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I will never under fannish mindset. I am just not dedicated enough apparently!
