phasers set to: procrastination

So! Apparently, the majority of people don't know wtf the bar exam is? Or maybe just the majority of non-law people I know have no idea what it is. I have lived in such a skewed world perspective for the past three years, man. Studying for it is already making me moody and stressed and it's not even July! I will probably hiatus in July...

Anyway, the exam's July 24 & 25 and I appreciate all the well-wishing regardless. They work like little tiny cushions to prevent massive internal bleeding every time I want to headdesk in frustration and despair. (Spoiler: it's a lot.) :D

In a momentary break, while I can still afford to take them (well, no, I probably can't afford to take them, but while they are still justifiable to myself): calling all Eddie Izzard & Star Trek fans! A hilarious piece of comedy.

Funnier, I've been told, if you've seen TOS, but still tear-inducing hilarious if you've only seen the Reboot and read a lot of fic (like me).

And now, a poll about movies:
[Poll #1752846]

I was also going to watch Under the Hawthorn Tree (山楂树之恋), but let's not kid ourselves, it is too fucking depressing. My mom cried the entire way through and I get my crying-at-everything gene from her, so that would be me, soggy and miserable. Bar studying does that enough, thanks. It doesn't need help.

Last note: SM finally got around to making official Zhou Mi merchandise. IT ONLY TOOK YOU THREE YEARS, FUCKERS. That said, I now have no disposable income whatsoever (I bought the peeeeens), so no dice. Now I am left only with dreams of daintily sipping alcoholic beverages potent enough to knock me out from the sweet cradle of your hot-pink-stylized mug, Zhou Mimi. (I am all class, amirite?)

I wish I could write. :|

Back to studying.

All I know about law I learned from John Grisham novels, and every single one of his protagonists almost had a breakdown from the bar exam. D: GOOD LUCK! EAT LOTS OF VEGETABLES!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to be a protagonist in a John Grisham novel! Or so I assume, having never read any of his books. They never interested me before law school and now I feel like they would just bring nightmares and depression, haha.

Thanks! /tweaks the cushion

good luck!! ♥ one of my friends who took the bar last year said it was surprisingly easier than expected? but she also studied insane amounts so this might need to be adjusted to an appropriate frame of reference.

i didn't actually think 山楂树之恋 was v. good, but imo zhang yi mou hasn't done anything especially good since 千里走单骑. although it did elicit a few manly tears from me! but yes, good luck with your studying, i'm sure you'll be fine!

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
One piece of advice we actually got was "think of the dumbest person you knew who was before you law school and how they passed - if they can do it, you can too!" It was terrible, haha. But yeah, they also emphasize this is the lowest we'll ever aim - basically to pass. Still stressful though. /o\ Much studying, much studying. Thank you though!

Honestly I have no interest at all in watching 山楂树之恋, but my mom is like "watch it and you will understand more what it was like to grow up in my childhood!" My face: D: Not that I don't want to know what it's like, but it's just depressing to think about, and then the whole guilt complex kicks in, and then the "maybe I should be studying 25 hours a day for this exam WHY DON'T I APPRECIATE MY LIFE MORE?" bit starts...

Honestly, I have no interest in X-Men (blasphemy! I know) because I...pay more attention to DC, I guess. But everyone is shouting about the bromance and I'm just like, yeah, I guess...I should... Honestly, watch me just end up rewatching Clueless or Lilo & Stitch or something. I need happy movies amidst bar studying! ;__;

Also, thank you! ♥

Thank you!! /adds cushion to her pile

I am a heathen :( I have no interest whatsoever in the movie but everyone is so !!! about it I feel like maybe I should watch, since I do like superhero/comic movies generally. But pretty much my limited interest lies with DC, so I am like, Magneto...Professor X...vaguely rings a bell, sure, one dude was evil, right? And one is good, in a wheelchair, bald, telepathic??? /dredges up the few X-Men cartoons she watched as a kid, among ALL THE BATMAN.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I grew up on Batman cartoons!! So yes. Though my memory is crap so I don't remember much haha. Most of my recent interest has been due to Nolan's revamp + Young Justice/Teen Titans (Tim/Kooon) + randomly reading Clark/Lex even though I never watched an episode of Smallville. :D It grows from there.

(oops, hasty button-pushing)

haha I suck at reading comics. I get my canon from fanon. What do you mean that's not a reliable way to learn canon? Surely Gundam Wing canon was exactly the way fanon portrayed it...

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I said Xmen because I am also a heathen (exams! why do you keep me away from the movies). Ticky.

I read that as you bought the peens. As in penises. /study mad

Here it actually involves a whole 'nother course after the degree. Then you have to go to the Supreme Court and say what an excellent character you have.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
@_@ oh dear god, having to go to the Supreme Court and talk about how awesome you are? Is it required? I know law is an undergrad course of study, right? So what do you do after with your degree, typically? Man, my base of knowledge is so US & Asia-centric. /fails

hahaha omg, no, I did not buy the peens. Not even if they came in 10 assorted colors, because skinny pens are great, but skinny peens maybe not so much.

Also, I am a bad Marvel fan, so my interest in the movie is low, but it seemed obligatory to include it in the poll. (I'll probably watch Pirates as a de-stresser bc trashy movies are the best for that! Nothing too heavy.)

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
State Supreme Court! which is slightly better? lol. We had a former High Court judge (Michael Kirby! he is known as the great dissenter and for being openly gay) give a speech recently and it would be terrifying going in front of the High Court. Even more so. And yes, at least in the state I'm studying in. Typically? well not everyone goes to the bar. Many people do double degrees (like me!) say Law/Accounting (not me!) as it adds something to your resume. You don't have to, but yeah (plus the prestige~~~ of doing a law degree). Of course many people do a law degree as an undergrad and can take the Legal Practice courses after the undergrad (studying, it never ends) to be qualified as a solicitor. To become a barrister is another course, most wait till their thirties before becoming one. Only then can you wear the wig and robe.

;) (the best response sometimes)

I am too! (plus DC has been... active of late and yeah, I'm watching it for the epic bromance and to glare at the failings, fun!)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh I see. Do you think you want to go on to be qualified as a solicitor? I am sort of intrigued by the barrister concept, but mostly because there are still wigs and robes involved. To me, it seems like jumping back in time right into history!! Probably it is nothing like what I'm imagining though. 8D

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly. I'm leaning to working for the government, or doing some in house work before doing it. The wigs and robes are probably the most intriguing part! Some of them are called Queen's Counsel, which would be pretty cool. Though who knows what would happen to the title if we became a Republic. Apparently the wigs and robes add a seriousness to the procedure, which is why even if you are barrister, they aren't worn in family courts.

hahaha pretty much! he said he will only go watch horror movies in theaters because he enjoys the feeling of being frightened! he refuses to watch other movies in theaters, says he'll watch them on dvd or something. weirdo.

[identity profile] weatherfront.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
ROFFFFFL oh my god I cracked up at when Eddie Izzard started doing DeForest Kelley flkdg;alngl;h I only watched the very earliest bits of TOS (and the reboot, of course) but uggggghhfhdlgkah;lkhg fucking HILARIOUS. *______*

I ticked all of the to-watch movies because it's actually sort of-- hard to choose. Super 8 and First Class, I haven't seen yet, but all the others-- well, they're not exactly equal quality, and it's not like I hated watching any of them the first time, but none of them are movies I would enjoy watching again (...maybe because a third watch of the King's Speech is really overkill)

However I just looked up the Pooh movie and I AM SUDDENLY PSYCHED, ARE THERE PLACES WHERE WE CAN HEAR THE VOICES (CRAIG FERGUSON WHAT ARE YOU DOING THERE???)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have pretty much yet to find a comedian I enjoy as much as Eddie Izzard :( Though his older stuff was better than his newer stuff, I think. Russell Peters was hilarious that one show I saw (on YT), but I never watched anything else. Granted, I don't spend much effort hunting down other comedians but mostly what I hear from them are really crude and gross sex/race/fat/etc jokes. Which is par for the course in the industry, I guess, but--

haha definitely all over the map in terms of quality & genre; hopefully I will get to all of them at some point, depending on what I'm in the mood for!

WINNIE THE POOH OF MY CHILDHOOD. I adore the books, Ifrit. I own Winnie the Pooh. I will one day acquire (among all the other books I will one day acquire for my GIANT BEAUTY & THE BEAST LIBRARY) House at Pooh Corner and the rest! The cute hand-drawn art! ;A;

The trailer's out, I think?

I know what the bar exam is and I'm not in law! But I was interested in going into years ago law so that may be why, haha.

Best of luck! *hug*

OTL

[identity profile] loika.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
in going into years ago law
Okay, how do I English.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
haha I'm so used to law school friends and us chatting about all of these things like it's the norm and everyone knows, but coming back to the "real world" I have people asking me wtf the bar exam is and why I need to take it and "didn't I already graduate"? /o\

But yes, people who looked in law (and cleverly decided not to do it, go you!) would probably know. And thank you!

[identity profile] suxing.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've only seen one of the ones you have lined up to watch, sooo...

And I totally cheated on the second question and checked like five of the options. /fail!

GOOD LUCK ON STUDYING I HEART YOUR FAAAAACE /sings

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-17 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, almost everyone picked more than one in the second question. I checked them aaaaall, as that is why I even listed them in the first place.

Thanks. ;_; The stress is mounting.

[identity profile] emeraldcrystal.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck~

I chose The King's Speech because I honestly liked the movie, and because I haven't watched the other ones listed. Except for Super 8, which was enjoyable, but not a movie I really liked.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you ;_;

Super 8 is not my type of movie either, but I have heard good things about it so I'm curious! and because it's JJ Abrahms... He surprised me with Star Trek, so now I want to give his other things a shot, haha.
