I care very little about the NBA (not since Michael Jordan retired) but I've been following the whole Linsanity phenomenon (mostly in the news, because actually watching NBA games requires more effort than this college basketball fan can muster) with interest that stems mostly from the glut of posts on my Facebook feed (what you get from having so many Asian friends) and from the novelty of having an Asian-American succeed in professional basketball.

Things I've thought:

- YAY AN ASIAN-AMERICAN PRO SPORTS STAR. (Caveat: there are probably others in, like, baseball or something. I'm no good with American sports, okay?)

- WTF IS THIS REAL LIFE?

- Dude, this is perfect inspirational overcome-the-odds sports movie material! Only if it were made into an inspirational overcome-the-odds sports movie, people wouldn't buy it, because it is too damned clichéd to be real. Holy cow.

- LOL, who am I kidding? They'll never make this into a movie. The lead would have to be Asian. Not only that: tall and Asian. And reasonably attractive, because it's Hollywood. Hollywood doesn't believe tall, attractive Asian-Americans exist! (My love life possibly agrees.) Moreover, the problem is that it's a story entirely about an Asian person who isn't a kung-fu master, accented comic relief, or exotic and mysterious foreigner. UNPOSSIBLE. Hollywood wouldn't believe a movie revolving entirely around an Asian person could sell successfully. Hollywood doesn't believe anyone but white actors and actresses can hold the sympathy and/or interest of the white audience for the entire movie, after all, and white people are the majority, so if they won't come to the movie, then Hollywood doesn't rake in the dough, and then the world would end. Poor Hollywood, so constrained in their casting choices because they can't help it if their majority audience is white! It's just demographics!

- Honestly, though, he seems like the kind of superstar Gary Stu everyone hopes they'd be like if they were ever in the same position: not just awesome, not just with a great rags-to-riches Cinderella story, but remarkably down-to-earth and humble, happy to pass on the credit to his coach, his teammates, and the system of play the Knicks employ. (Also, God. But maybe not all of us would share that faith if we were the Mary Sue/Gary Stu in question.)

SERIOUSLY, HE IS A REAL LIFE GARY STU. (But Asian. Gary Chu?)

Take away all my serious thoughts and it really does come down to: Damn, it's pretty cool there's an Asian-American getting some recognition. I feel like hyphenated-Asians in the US either get lumped together with the rest of Asia or overlooked entirely. Suddenly it's like this invisible subculture has been revealed to the Rest of the World. The news articles, jesus. There are Asian-American Christians? There are Asian-Americans into sports?! There are Asian-Americans raised by Tiger Moms who care about more than studying and good grades?! Good god, next you're going to be telling us they can sing and rap and dance and write and make movies too!

So! I've been reading a lot, as always, so here are lots of recs for various fandoms:

DCU, Disney, Harry Potter, Hikaru no Go, One Piece, Star Trek XI, and assorted Yuletide fandoms (19 fics total)

Here are some recent incidents from my life:

Cut because brevity may be the soul of wit, but I am not witty. :( I just use lots of capslock to express my feelings. )

Not too much else has been going on with my life. Some work, yes, but that's not terribly exciting. The holidays! They were pretty low-key, honestly, with lots of food and so far no excessive family drama (keeping my fingers crossed on that one!). Mostly I am looking forward to enjoying my coffee or tea (chai lattes! LONDON FOGS! ♥ or, of course, the ever classic Chinese green tea) and lots of reading while I can.

Maybe I'll try writing again, too. I want to try writing in new fandoms! How do people start writing in new fandoms? It's so hard to get over my fear of characterization or the fear that everyone else is doing it better/has done it better, ahhh. Clearly the solution is just to get tipsy first. Then you won't care. (That's how it worked for me in Inception!)

So! Apparently, the majority of people don't know wtf the bar exam is? Or maybe just the majority of non-law people I know have no idea what it is. I have lived in such a skewed world perspective for the past three years, man. Studying for it is already making me moody and stressed and it's not even July! I will probably hiatus in July...

Anyway, the exam's July 24 & 25 and I appreciate all the well-wishing regardless. They work like little tiny cushions to prevent massive internal bleeding every time I want to headdesk in frustration and despair. (Spoiler: it's a lot.) :D

In a momentary break, while I can still afford to take them (well, no, I probably can't afford to take them, but while they are still justifiable to myself): calling all Eddie Izzard & Star Trek fans! A hilarious piece of comedy.

Funnier, I've been told, if you've seen TOS, but still tear-inducing hilarious if you've only seen the Reboot and read a lot of fic (like me).

And now, a poll about movies: Under the cut to save flists and spark curiosity. Ooh la la. )

Last note: SM finally got around to making official Zhou Mi merchandise. IT ONLY TOOK YOU THREE YEARS, FUCKERS. That said, I now have no disposable income whatsoever (I bought the peeeeens), so no dice. Now I am left only with dreams of daintily sipping alcoholic beverages potent enough to knock me out from the sweet cradle of your hot-pink-stylized mug, Zhou Mimi. (I am all class, amirite?)

I wish I could write. :|

Back to studying.

HEY GUYS. I am super tired after a long day. I was thinking about making a long post about football (fútbol) or tennis but it would make less sense than usual because I am so tired. Then I thought I'd make a post a la [livejournal.com profile] cherrybina to talk about me! And who I am and stuff I like (lots and lots of things, evidently) for all you new people. (HI NEW PEOPLE.) But, um, still tired. It's the perfect excuse for everything, really.

So instead I'm just going to leave you this meme and you should do it and we will chat! And I will switch between the Soderling v. Federer match while torn about who I want to win (I dislike Federer so... But a Federer-Nadal match would still be epic... Dilemma!) and Top Chef. And then go to sleep at, like, 10. Because I am cool and my life is cool and so is the 8am class I have tomorrow!

Is my tiredness showing? :(

DO THE MEME. LET'S BE FRIENDS. Also ask me questions on my formspring! I'll babble more about me and Inception and Clex and Kradam and Qmi and sports (oh my god sports, how do I have so much to say?) another day. I know you're waiting with bated breath and all that. PATIENCE, LOVELIES. You will be rewarded.

So I have been inadvertently caught up in the World Cup football craze! My Twittering has been a thing of incoherency, randomness, and beauty - if you want to take a look, I'm heartwaters. (Congrats to Korea for winning their opening game!)

This post is to bring to you the glory of Hot Men.

That is:

The Non-Football Fan's Guide to the World Cup
or What to do When You're Just Here for the Hot Men
"Want to watch the World Cup but know absolutely nothing about it? Enjoy ogling good-looking men whose jobs give them perfect bodies? Wonder if I really hate myself enough to decide to find at least one attractive player from every single one of the 32 partcipating nations? Well then, this picspam is for you! It won't really teach you much about football or any of the teams involved, but it will let you know who you should hope will take off their shirt."

AWESOME PICSPAM. (ETA: Sheena & Gem would like to lodge protests of cute guys that were missed. In that case, LEAVE SOME PICS HERE, LADIES.)

Want a more kpop-flavored picspam?

Have Donghae running around playing football in the rain showing you some gorgeous flashes of thigh.

You? No, those flashes of thigh are all for meeee.

And one last hot man though it is unrelated to soccer:

Jensen Ackles, wet. You know the phrase "rode hard and put away wet"? Looks like this. Also: FRECKLESSSS.

Credits to my darling [livejournal.com profile] swingingstars for the hot footballers and for Jensen, and love to my babydoll [livejournal.com profile] catskilt for wet!Donghae.

I like this post. Do you?

# Awesome Bonamana drum cover is awesome

# The Spoon Theory - If you click on nothing else in this post, please click on this. 2 pages to make you think.

# Top Chef Masters' finale last night thrilled me.
Cut for spoilers )

# The Wonder Girls/2AM concert in STL in July was just cancelled and I am more disappointed than I expected considering that it was my ex who suggested we go (with a group of others), since I had no idea they were even coming. I confess: I know and care very little about 2AM but Wonder Girls. A chance to see Sunye live! :( And I've heard sweet things about Sohee-in-person and I love Ye-eun and now I am :(! On the other hand, Adam Lambert is in town in early August. Hmm.

# SPN is being turned into an anime; I know you've all heard about it but I will reiterate it anyway. At fist I didn't know how to feel about it, then I was horrified, and now I am just loling imagining how exponentially batshit the fandom will be afterwards. Samu to Deen wa CHO KAWAII desu! ^__^ THEY ARE SO BISHIE. More info under the cut. )

Also:
(11:44:07 AM) meiface: oh god i have forgotten all my fangirly japanese ):
(11:45:00 AM) meiface: i'm trying to think of the japanese for "very" as in "very cute" and i keep thinking in Korean. ;__; jinjja kawaii. yay for mixing languages

# Today I bought a miniature coffeemaker (it brews 5 cups, is digital and programmable, and IS ADORABLE). It has brought me much caffeinated joy. Everyone should celebrate with me.

# And now 2 fic recs from [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. They are predictably Sam/Dean and and J2. [livejournal.com profile] 2naonh3_cl2 questions why we are even fandom friends (she ships the blasphemous gay pairing rather than the fraternally incestuous gay pairing :3). I don't know either: she spent the afternoon reading Pillar Pair. I was stunned and appalled and told her righteously that Tezuka has all the emotional passion of a brick wall trying very passionately to obstruct the way or hold up a roof!

Actually, no, because I am really not at all emotionally invested in ship wars from a fandom long past, but I was amused.

Sam/Dean & J2 rec under here with lots of commentary and the promised TMI. Sweet. )

/wraps up post, mops up after self.

Firstly: Happiest of birthdays to my best [livejournal.com profile] suxing and [livejournal.com profile] forochel and (because it's likely I won't post again tomorrow) [livejournal.com profile] catskilt. To say nothing yet of the 26th, 27th, and 28th... So many May babies!

Secondly: So I was reading some people's thoughts on RPF/RPS and got kind of curious about the flist.

Do you guys have any strong feelings for or against RPF? I know a lot of you guys enjoy it/read it/write it considering that a lot of you I met, uh, in the kpop fandom. So.

I can enjoy almost anything in fiction because I have this huuuge mental barrier between reality and fiction so gay brotherly (apocalyptic) incest? I'm so there. Korean boy band members macking on each other? Sign me up. RL married actors ~falling in love with each other~? No problemo.

More babble about RPS. Now tell me YOUR opinions! :D )

So today I drove back from NC to STL - 13 hour drive by my lonesome. I complained a lot about Virginia because I've hated VA since college and my stupid fucking sorority's mandatory roadtrips (sorry those of you who live there; the area around DC is excepted from my blistering hate!) but it wasn't as bad as WV because toll roads I hate toll roads. Though driving the winding mountain roads probably kept me awake.

KY was unremarkable, IN was horrible and wouldn't end (this probably had to do with my promising myself I'd stop for dinner after I got out of the state and then it wouldn't end), and IL is boring and flat. MO is the same. The Midwest blows, you guys. :( I'm sorry, two years here and I still have no love for it - it doesn't help that I went to the beach when I was back in NC so now I'm even more *__________* at my home state.

Also, I like our license plate design best. :D

I tweeted randomly throughout the trip bitching about crosscountry roadtrips not being the same without Winchesters.

[livejournal.com profile] mardisgrasmaven kindly submitted this:

I am cheered and although I will hate driving for at least two days, I will go read some SPN/J2 porn and glee about how fucking adorable/precious/happy Jenny and Danny look at their wedding (tyty Kendra!). alksdghdkfj you guys, THEY WILL HAVE SUCH BEAUTIFUL BABIES. Look at their wide, wide smiles. I hope they are happy foreveeeerrr. Also, Jared was there and a grooomsman! SO CUTE, J2 HETEROSEXUAL LIFE PARTNERS/BFF. ♥♥ (Don't ask me about Jared/Gen because I will just sob to you about Sandy and it will be embarrassing for everyone.)

Okay, I Ship Wincest and J2. Would anyone be interested if I made a fic rec post for the amazing fic that's stood out to me even among a wealth of amazing fic? (Or you could just go through my J2 and SPN memories.) You don't have to know the fandom that well either! I've only watched through season 2 - supernatural.tv keeps me updated on spoilers. Or you could just YT the gag reels and funny moment videos the fans have made. All kinds of amazing? Why, yes. ♥

I SPENT THE WEEKEND WATCHING SNSD AND SHINEE ON HELLO BABY (haven't finished either yet) AND OMG. Just. Mad, mad flail. I want a baby so badly. ;_; No, it's a lie, I'm not so crazy as to think I could handle the responsibility right now. But oh god do I miss having cute babies and toddlers around to play with. My biological clock rings loudly at me. :(

Sunny is making a concerted effort at winning away Sica's favorite spot - she is so fucking cute (her aegyo, her aegyooo) and yet sexy and has a great sense of humor and I love her friendships with my other favorites and she is so good with babies. alskghf This is apparently more of a turn on for me than I realized. My heart~

Another person whose amazing kid skills have absconded with my heart? (I mean, yes, he had it already, but now the Favorite Forever is sort of cemented much the way my feelings for Donghae are.)

Choi Minhooo.

I can't flail hard enough about how insanely adorable he is with Yoogeun and how he totally dotes on him and is so patient and spoils him so badly. So much spoiling, god, but that's mostly because he's not actually the kid's father - I believe he'll be able to be strict once he's got his own kid. He's already got the interest and the energy and the ability to teach and eee. But omg Minho is so in love with Yoogeun that it makes me smile so, so much. Favorite foreverrrrr. But the show really made me love all of them - I'm learning about SHINee, sob. Maybe I'll be able to write them better now. Jonghyunnie, iluuuu.

I remember Donghae on Adonis Camp being awesome with the kids - he was so young then though and he spent most of the time playing with them. I'd like to believe he's matured to the point where he could handle taking care of them on top of just the playing?

God, I love this show. Baabieeeeeees. Cute Asian baaaaaabies. And the sweetest, most adorable idols ever. ♥♥ /grabby hands

Related: I've gotten a hold of the first five eps of SHINee on Hello Baby, subbed. Does anyone know where I'd go for the following? I know the last episode airs tomorrow or something and there are reports of tears, teaaaaaaars. Oh Minho.

Cut for a large picture of gorgeous aquarium. )

Um, I kind of want to visit the Seaworld in Thailand now. Holy shit that is a huge and gorgeous aquarium. Is the Georgia Aquarium comparable, because that's already on mine and [livejournal.com profile] swingingstars's list.

As a UNC alum, I root for two teams: UNC and whoever's playing Duke. Thus, NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship tonight? GO BUTLER. Just for the record.

Minor break in hiatus for a few things:

{1} LOL, totally gave up on Nanowrimo halfway through. I just can't spend the time stressing about my wordcount everyday when I need to spend all my time stressing out about upcoming exams. (Why...have I learned nothing all semester? Crap.)

{2} The MAMA awards are a fucking joke with SME boycotting. I mean, seriously, SJ, SNSD, SHINee, f(x)? All huge this year - not factoring them into the award process totally invalidates your award. No guarantee that they would've won (mm, no, I take it back, SJ and SNSD would have won something, for sure), but it's like taking out all the major players and then saying, "Now that you have no competition, you've totally won!" That's unfair for the winners, too. Though I'm sure it's still nice to have an award, generally.

(More on kpop: SJM is the most attractive thing ever, ugh and I still like the Wonder Girls. :> And that about sums it up.)

{3} I am so out of touch with kpop, you guys. I didn't even know SME had boycotted MAMA and totally went "Wait, what?" when I found out the winners. You know what's taken over my life? Star Trek. alskdghfd yeah, what can I say? Captain Fine and Zach Quinto have totally won me over to K/S forever, and ughhh I can't resist the adorable of Sulu/Chekov either.

( Rec post for Star Trek, Super Junior, Supernatural )

{4} Rediscovering love for manga recently. alskgdh Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE finally finished and it freaking blew my mind. What the fuck, CLAMP? Why are you like this? I want so desperately to fic for it or to own it all and reread it. *__* KuroFaiii. And no OTP will ever be more OTP than Syaoran/Sakura. Also, I want to take up Bakuman sometime (probably after finals) because I freaking love Obata's art. Um, on the BL front, none of my favorite manga-ka have been doing that much new stuff. Following their WsIP is hard, yo. :( But much love for Sakuragi Yaya's Yume Musubi, Koi Musubi and Tateno Makoto's Myuuzu no Gakuen de Aou. I wish Yamane Ayano would do something other than Viewfinder and Crimson Spell...or would at least finish one of them. /stress

{5} Christmas wishlists! My material list is short this year.

--Amazon/Half.com/Starbucks gift cards
--HaeSica icons
--Christmas cards

Let me know if you need/want my address and I'll PM/email it to you (alternatively, look at my contact post). :) I will be doing the same for most of you: trawling your entries for your address or pouncing on you in some other way to request it.
