scanlations are srs bizness

So I was up in Pittsburgh with [livejournal.com profile] nightengale last week, right? And we did things like watch Drive & Heroes and also movies! But while I was reading her manga Banana Fish (WHICH YOU SHOULD ALL READ AND LOVE, even if it's impossible to get your hands on), I tried to pimp her some of the shiny BL stuff I love a lot (other than Boy Princess 'cause that's been pimped already, hee).

When I opened up my scanlation folder, my wife did a double-take.

I'm sure some of you have more! (Does it count if you have an external harddrive? 'Cause I don't.)

If you want something you know/think I have, feel free to request. I have 15.8GB of stuff. I must have something you want. ::offers her body up on a platter::

alskjfldk. I don't know. I think I'm giving up on my SSBB story. I'm kind of in a bad mood and don't want to write and also I would rather read. I have been trying for ages (read: two days) to get my hands on Brethren: Raised by Wolves by W.A. Hoffman. And now Melusine as recced by [livejournal.com profile] hametsuenorondo.

On an more RL-oriented note, am I fucked if I take the LSATs in late September/early October instead of June (if I want to send off applications this fall)? Probably. Aw, shit.

This post is full of whining, sry. :( I'm sure I will cheer up later.

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
...well, it's more than I have. Mainly because I dare not see how much I have. But probably less, I've been reading manga/manwha for shorter time period than you!

Regarding the LSATs, I have no idea but good luck! *huggles*

::clings and pets your panda::

You are so nice and lovely and sweet. I'm just going to, um, cling to you for a while, okay? :O

Oh man! I totally forgot about the stuff I burned off onto CDs. That's 17 volumes of Yakitate!!Japan and 23 volumes of HanaKimi. D: I have no idea when I accumulated all of this stuff.

Do yours tend to be full series? Shoujo, shounen? Or also random BL oneshots and one-volume deals? ::has so much yaoi pr0n omg::

Er. if it makes you feel any better, I have over double what you have? Oh. I have an external harddrive... that's probably why... But I pretty much keep everything I download so I have a lot of crap. (if there's anything you want, I'm sure I'll have something too. XD) SSBB story? Reading is good for you--I'm still trying to find that book you recced before... Covenants? Yeah... I hope you feel better soon. =D

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, that is a shiny prospect. If ever I see a shiny manga series on a scanlation website with no accessible downloads, I'll pester you to see if you have it. Thank you for the lovely offer.

I hope you find Covenants! It is not as obscure as the books I'm looking for, so libraries and bookstores actually stock it. Not that I am bitter about my fruitless search, oh no. (I will probably just buy it online.)

And this is with me routinely deleting a bunch of oneshots and series every few months or so! Because I realize I don't actually remember what happens in them and go look and kind of wonder why I kept in the first place. ~_~

Actually, I'll be happy to even have 15GB of free space on my compy right now .__.; *kicks useless ancient compy*

Good luck with RL business. :X *not anywhere near America so doesn't know how to help* I hope it'll work out in the end ♥ :D

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen those Ravenclaw icons around everywhere. Hm.

I sympathize with your computer woes! Pre-college laptop, I didn't bother downloading things or going to sites with lots of pictures. Oh the memories...

♥ Thanks anyway. :"> The sentiment helps.

[identity profile] chibipuck.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Banana Fish! ♥ I think that would be my first intro to (semi) shounenai manga. (volume 3's(?)kiss scene!) I've always loved Ash and Eiji's closeness... Of course, the ending, the ENDING. GOD. I usually skip it so that I can read the side stories.

I'd said 15.something GB of manga is a lot, except I'm pretty sure I've I FAR SURPASSED that number several years ago. ::cough:: All of which is unhelped by my packrat like tendencies... ::coughcough::

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU CAN'T TALK TO ME ABOUT THE ENDING. D: I've heard horror stories about it--well, mostly that it's absolute tragic and people are still ripped up about it ages afterward but alskdjlfk. I've only read through volume 13. ;o; How on earth did you read all of it?

Srsly, I knew my flist would have people that would put my 15gigs of scanlations to shame. :D We are so awesome. (Music is another thing. I'm not even in the league of comparison with some people, haha.)

re 15. GB scanlation folder

Last check I have around five times over XDXD. does that answer your question?
Partly because i read almost anything and partly I hate burning off uncompleted manga and partly I had the occasion (oops that's three parts ^__^) to went back for manga burned of on CDs and find I can't access the CD anymore

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
:O You...you scare me a little. That is a lot of scanlations! Is it mostly BL or is it full series like Hikago or Naruto and the like?

And, eeee, thank you for Mélusine and its sequel! :D I had to be leechy but do you possibly have other shiny gaythemed books? I am interested to know.

♥!!

I burn manga scanlations on DVDs and I think my collection is about 40 Gb right now :P Practically all of it is yaoi.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
:O! I feel much better about my 15 gigs now. I am nowhere in your league! (Though I have a sneaking feeling that if I never deleted all the stuff BL I'd downloaded, I'd have something close to that. But my computer would hate me and not all of the BL I downloaded was worth keeping anyway. So I am justified in my mind. XD)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh, now we're getting the mixed reviews. And I'm a little :( at hearing that there's a sequel (and thus Mélusine has unfinished plot threads) because I generally hate sequels on principle. Covenants by Lorna Freeman is one of my favorite books ever but I refuse to read its sequel The King's Own. (Actually, I tried, but twenty pages in I wanted to die. Why must you introduce a love interest? Why must she be so Mary Sue? Fail.)

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik was fabulous too--and the sequel made me so upset I couldn't read the third book. Alas and alack.

I now have ebook file of Mélusine now though! :D So I can peruse without spending money. ♥

I would prolly have that much, if not for my random and impulsive BALETE!happy moments when I remove...a lot of scanlations.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I like my BALETE!happy moments too! Because not all scanlations are worth keeping. D: Sry2say. (I get rid of random clips and videos then too. Oh deleting KAT-TUN gave me so many gigs back...though that was, like, last year. Still! I remember it well. Fangirling JE is hard on the harddrive.)

I have... Uh, I have that amount on my laptop right now, and like double that on my external and I have some on cds *coughs* XD But yeah, that's still a lot. :O

Scanlations are Very Serious Business. XD

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-04 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
They are indeed! I think next time I can't get my hands on a scanlation I want, I'll just whine to my flist and see if they have it. XD

(Anonymous) 2007-07-04 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I got a new computer recently, so I have like no manga on my harddrive. :'( Yeah wow, haha. xDDD

Ummmm good tidings with the LSATs?

[identity profile] orange-moose35.livejournal.com 2007-07-04 05:02 am (UTC)(link)

I've got (*quick check and counting on fingers*) just under 3 GB on my 40 GB laptop drive. Gotta move those soon.

On the 160 GB external drive, God only knows.
On the 250 GB external drive...Heaven help me.
Next buy: 500 GB, baby!

But that's a lot more anime than scans. ^_______^

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-04 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
...I tremble in awe. Though I definitely understand how much space anime takes up. I've never even tried to calculate how much anime I might have if I counted up my CDs and DVDs. (Not as much as some, I know. I am more of a manga girl than an anme girl.)

*cough* 15Gb...Mei I am thoroughly surprised at you...
ONLY 15?
*shakes head*
I've only been in the business of reading manga for 3 years and checking all my hardrives I found I have 46gb of only yaoi and another 27Gb of everything else...plus all the series I've burnt off onto cds. (still doesn't touch the size of my anime collection though)
This is probably partially due to the fact that I love collecting things (even if I haven't read them) and hate to get rid of things that I may one day (highly improbably) want...that also accounts for why my room has mor stacks of paper than anything else tucked away all over the place.
Now if only I could figure out a way to upload without my internet dying I could share around some of my favourites.
...and wow do you have yours organised neatly. Mine are folderised by the group scanlating (as I can never remember magakas for more than 5 minutes anyway)

OOOH! Oofuri! *sparkles*
I can't wait for more of the manga and anime. *sniffles* So slow...but definitely worth the wait.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I know, I should be ashamed. But I have tons of GBs being taken away by MVs and dramas and movies! The difficulties of being a multi-fandom girl. ;) And I keep deleting manga after I dl and read them because I either don't like them or decide that my computer needs space more than I need the manga. alskjfldk.

Oh the flist pwns me so bad in terms of scanlation size. At least I know where to beg if I ever want anything, hee!

See, I can remember manga-kas by their art style, but never which group scanlated. Nakama and Hochuuami tend to have some of the best stuff though. ♥

[identity profile] juicybo0.livejournal.com 2007-07-10 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
WOW. 15.8GB of scanlations O.O i hardly bother to download stuff cuz it takes too long on my computer!!! :( it must have smething to do with it being a laptop hahaa.

it depends on the school, if your gnna take the LSATS during sep/oct then you'll have to take the risk of using the scores you get on that test and send it to the school!! but if not then yeh its probably a bit late....why you want to send applications this fall? alot of ppl are sending it during winter...

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone gets download-happy when they have their own laptop free of parental/sibling prying. ;D

Well, sending applications this winter, I guess. I just use "fall" because that's what I associate with going back to school. And, yeah, the scores from my Sept/Oct LSAT is going to the schools. It should be okay. ::crosses fingers::
