capslock is a valid form of feelings-expression, too!

So! I've been reading a lot, as always, so here are lots of recs for various fandoms:

DCU, Disney, Harry Potter, Hikaru no Go, One Piece, Star Trek XI, and assorted Yuletide fandoms (19 fics total)

Here are some recent incidents from my life:

On writing
MEI: Hmm, I have not written in a long time. I should fix that? *signs up for holiday fic exchange*
EXCHANGE: *hands out prompts*
MEI: Ooh, I like this prompt! I should be able to do this, no problem. :D
FIC: *grows*
MEI: Um.
FIC: *grows more*
MEI: Maybe you could...stop now?
FIC: *keeps growing*
MEI: ...oh dear.

I am not sure how much more detail I can give since the fic exchange is supposed to be anonymous for a bit, so just know that you can expect me to repost some kpop fic to my writing comm in about two weeks. It is exciting to me that I have managed to write. \o/ And yes, there was the standard amount of griping and whining because it is an integral part of my writing process. Count yourself lucky you weren't subject to it. (Unless you were, in which case, MY APOLOGIES.)

On reading
MEI: I feel like reading! I always feel like reading. Let's see, what should I read?
AGATHA CHRISTIE BOOKS: Hi!
MEI: Okay, I shall read Agatha Christie books! :D
ONE PIECE: Hi! You haven't forgotten about me, have you?
MEI: No, never!
ONE PIECE DOUJINSHI: And us!
MEI: But of course, because you are like fic except with pictures. How could I want anything more?
[livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays: It's December! Hi!
MEI: Oh yes--
FAIRY TALES (Andrew Lang Fairy Books version, Grimm version, Robin McKinley retellings version): Hi!

MEI: OH GOD TOO MUCH TO READ NOT ENOUGH TIME

To say nothing of all the unread stuff currently barely even in line: Pterry's Snuff, the Merlin military AU Loaded March (three stories behind, ack), catching up on Kimi ni Todoke, Bakuman... I wish I could spend all of my time reading, but alas reality is never so kind.

On Christmas presents
People sent me cards, which are festive and glittery and make me smile:

I got a Totoro case for my phone >0< it makes my inner child glee:

And also Snuff and Here is Greenwood 9, which finally completes my HiG set.

MY FRIENDS ARE FANTASTIC ILU. ♥♥♥

On sports
UNC: *wins*
MEI: Yay!
UNC: *loses*
MEI: OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO DIE!!!

Yes, college basketball season is a very stressful and melodramatic time. Yes, it is clearly life or death. In conclusion: GO TO HELL DUKE.

Liverpool and I are not currently on speaking terms, because I'm still mad about the Suárez incident - the racist comments and LFC's fucking stupid defense of them. No. Even against a Man Utd player, har har, no.

FERNANDO TORRES: *exists, continues playing for Chelsea*
MEI: You look terrible in blue.
MEI: Your hair is ugly.
MEI: I hope you trip and fall on your face.
MEI: Fuck, I miss you! T____T (But you do look terrible in blue, YOU SHOULD BLEED RED ALWAYS YOU FUCKER.)

On movies
STAR TREK SEQUEL: We finally have an official release date!
MEI: Yay!

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: *apparently Bane is unintelligible to many people*
MEI: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU THAT IS T-HARD HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY NOT UNDERSTAND HIM?

Yeah, my taste in movies is fantastic. Or...not. But in my defense, Katie McGrath is very pretty. :'>

ALSO, THIS MEANS WAR IN FEBRUARY \O/ \O/ \O/

On kpop
WONDER GIRLS: *are flawless*
SNSD: *have stopped promoting The Boys THANK FUCK*

SME: We're going to debut a new group!
MEI: ????
SME: Their name is EXO!
MEI: ????
SME: There will be a K(orean) subgroup and a M(andarin) subgroup!
MEI: ...yes, dividing your fanbase along country lines is a great idea.
SME: Possibly one of the band members is some kid named Liu Chao.
MEI: Look, unless he's Zhou Mi's boyfriend, I don't really give a fuck.
FANDOM: ...he might be Zhou Mi's boyfriend?
MEI: ...color me intrigued.

MEI: No, wait. ALL I WANT OUT OF THIS FANDOM IS A QMI DUET IN CHINESE, OKAY, STOP DISTRACTING ME.

Not too much else has been going on with my life. Some work, yes, but that's not terribly exciting. The holidays! They were pretty low-key, honestly, with lots of food and so far no excessive family drama (keeping my fingers crossed on that one!). Mostly I am looking forward to enjoying my coffee or tea (chai lattes! LONDON FOGS! ♥ or, of course, the ever classic Chinese green tea) and lots of reading while I can.

Maybe I'll try writing again, too. I want to try writing in new fandoms! How do people start writing in new fandoms? It's so hard to get over my fear of characterization or the fear that everyone else is doing it better/has done it better, ahhh. Clearly the solution is just to get tipsy first. Then you won't care. (That's how it worked for me in Inception!)

re: On reading
Exactly. ;__________________;

So much to read, so much to watch, so little time. /falls over

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
SO MUCH IN THE WORLD!! And never enough time. :( And while I slowly get around to things, even more things pop up to be read!! A neverending cycle...

[identity profile] chaos-harmony.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: *lacks Robin, and since Mei is all over Tim Drake, fails to find TDKR that interesting in terms of plot*

TIM DRAKE IS THE BEST ROBIN (except maybe for his girlfriend, mostly because Stephanie Brown is spunky and hilarious). And yeah, I think that Nolanverse!Batman is sort of generally boring plotwise, but this somehow does not stop me from watching the movies multiple times.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
My knowledge of DCU is purely fandom-based! I...have a lot of fandoms like that, lol. But Tim Drake is still my favorite! :D

I really need a rewatch of The Dark Knight. I vaguely remember liking it (back before I discovered my love for Time Drake) but in terms of plot, I have forgotten everything. You know, the stuff that might be relevant to the sequel, who knows...

[identity profile] ky-rin.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy this post a lot. It's very dramatic. And cute. ♥

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
LOL my life is pretty boring. I make drama out of the little moments to entertain myself. ♥

[identity profile] ky-rin.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I also want to watch moviessssssssssssss. Sherlock. Etc. Can't be bothered to name
Them. Maybe I'll get netflix. Maybe I'll stream drama instead. Maybe I'll catch up w that manga too ahhhh

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, there are alike a bajillion things to read or watch. TOO MANY CHOICES MAKE LIFE HARD FOR AN INDECISIVE PERSON WITH NOT ENOUGH TIME.

Although I always vote for manga. :D

[identity profile] pregnantcigar.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god your phone! and also I second Anmi's comment. totally loled at THE NEWS: Hi! (We update every day.)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
ahaha the news. I'm doing my best to stay up to date but it also means allotting a certain amount of time to get angry/frustrated each day too. Ugh, the news.

My phone makes me happy! :D

[identity profile] pregnantcigar.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
how do you keep up with everything?! the news in addition to ALL THOSE FANDOMS, oh man oh man ;o; I'm going through your recs right now and can't even recognize most of them!

it's really pretty *~*

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for the news it helps that I can read it during work and also we always have the news on during dinner. As for fandom, I really am not up to date on anything. /o\ I just have a lot of fringe awareness of stuff that's going on and then...I read fic. Mostly old stuff, unless I know it's an ongoing thing like with hd_hols or yuletide. It's basically my unwinding down-time thing, so. :D

[identity profile] ky-rin.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)

Because it is SM and they like to wring every last drop of blood, I mean, every last cent they can from anything even remotely popular. :(

Oh god, so many books! I suppose it is a good problem to have, all things considered. /clicks 'renew' a lot T_T

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still bitter over Nolan not including Robin(s). I have many, many feelings about this. But I spare you because I am kind ;)

The Totoro cover is the cutest! /lusts

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Totoro case makes me think I should definitely schedule a rewatch of the movie. :D

Ugh, the reason Nolan decided not to include Robin was because he thought their inclusion wouldn't match the "dark" tone of his Batman reboot. I'm like...really? Also, Christian Bale refused to be in the movies if there was a Robin? I...really have no words.

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think you should :D

lololol yes, I've read that and my eyebrows jumped a bit. Obviously they haven't read much of the current source material ie over the last 20 years. Still stuck on the Silver age of Robin. And Bale refusing is a bit odd. Of course I think the first movie was good, having a Robin before a Batman would be weird but then you could introduce a Robin! But that would distract from the "dark" tone since the reason there are Robins (as put forward by Tim after Jason died when he was trying to persuade Dick to return to being a Robin) is that Batman needs a Robin otherwise he is all doom and gloom. Tim... didn't so great at that :P but hey, it wasn't his fault his early years were during the 90's. Ugh. So many words >.>;;

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
But Batman is doom and gloom all the time anyway???

Yeah, idk what Bale has against Robins - maybe just the fact that there have been some ridiculous Batman & Robin movies in the past? Or maybe fear of the ~homoerotic~ implications that always sort of follow the pair around.

WHATEVER AT LEAST WE HAVE FANDOM.

[identity profile] meritjubet.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much lol Robins are supposed to change that. It has worked less than well since Jason :P

I imagine it has something to do with the movies especially. And yeah, possibly that too. Actors will play gay but many tend to expect an Oscar (nomination) out of it. Oh how brave, you kissed a man *rolls eyes*

ALWAYS

[identity profile] arccie.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Mei it's a disaster! I currently do NOT have enough to read.
I poke old fandoms, shrug at 99% of descriptions and wander off again.
THERE IS SOMETHIONG WRONG WITH ME!
(Although I still manage to stay up way too late doing essentially nothing. >_>)
Next I will actually organise my gazillion files or something. @_@

Actually I am catching up with my One Piece anime. Not as good as the manga, but still pretty darn awesome. I am only 150 episodes behind now instead of 250.

I am seriously not getting excited about movies because I am no good with extended tension. I am totally going to see Sherlock Holmes and Avengers and Dark Knight Rises (even if it could be 100X better with Robin) and This Means War and The Hobbit (which will not be in cinemas until December next year. DECEMBER! NEXT YEAR!). So yeah trying to only get excited once the movies are in the cinema. This is also why I am not getting too worked up over Star Trek 2013. My heart just can't take it.

...I want to write, but my muses keep laughing at me. They're being very insensitive to the writing-block impaired.

Mmm chai lattes. I hope you're holidays were as lovely and relaxing as they are. ♥
Edited 2011-12-28 14:17 (UTC)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg Arccie, how can that be? You must go to a library immediately and find things you want to read! Or scour the internet - it is a big internet. Surely there is something out there?

...or you could be productive, yes. I am never productive when I could be busy reading instead. It's terrible

I'm also terrible at watching movies! Mostly, I just don't have the attention span for it unless I'm stuck in a theater and forced to pay attention with no other distractions. But I do like all the movies you've mentioned. :D It'll be a long time waiting for them all the come out though...

One Piece ♥♥ always!! I need to go...read more of that...

My holidays were fairly relaxing indeed. I hope yours were too!

[identity profile] kasugai-gummie.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
/delighted with your life and its capslocked reactions.

Your reasons of disinterest in TDKR's plot is mine exactly. I'm still waiting for DC to give Tim his time to shine in films, either live action or animated. Hasn't happened yet. :|

Never grew up with Totoro, but that cell phone case is beautiful. So soft, and pretty, and well designed. Bravah. ♥
Edited 2011-12-28 14:51 (UTC)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Nolan's next project is evidently a Superman reboot, lolol. I doubt we'll see Kon there either. At least we have fandom for our Tim/Kon needs.

It was one of the few cases with familiar anime that wasn't garishly loud, so I was especially pleased. SO ASIAN, my friend said. She may be right.

[identity profile] jibrailis.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That Totoro case is giving me heart palpitations of joy (or too much post-Christmas feasting, who knows).

AGATHA CHRISTIE. I have recently been on a Christie binge where I'm like, hey I've enjoyed her books in the past! So let's read more! What have you read lately? What can you recommend? I've read most of her really famous books (Murder on the Orient Express, Roger Ackroyd, And Then There Were None, etc), and now I'm making my way through her back catalogue. Have you read Miss Marple? I haven't, so I'm wondering if I should.

FAIRY TALES. Are always appropriate.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I COULD TALK A LOT ABOUT CHRISTIE BOOKS ALWAYS. I actually started off with Miss Marple books ages ago, but got into Hercule Poirot and loved him, but have lately been going back to the Miss Marple books. She's a lot of fun - solving crimes in a different, less assuming (and less egotistical lol) way than Poirot does. "Murder at the Vicarage" is pretty good, but it's the first book to introduce her, so Christie hadn't settled into her characterization there. I really liked "A Murder is Announced" and "A Pocket Full of Rye" is pretty classic.

As for Poirot ones to recommend, hmm. I remember enjoying Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile - both were more ~exotic~ non-London settings (whether or not that's your thing? whether or not that even matters?). I actually have some of the collections of short stories out now - faster reads, hopefully, in between ALL OF MY OTHER READING. @_@ (Also I have a lot of Heyer, ohoho.)

[identity profile] osoreranai.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, you read a lot. I thought reading a novel a week would be a lot, but you definitely read more than I do. Very nice.

Oh! And I started reading One Piece on your rec. And you know, I just. I can't seem to stop reading it. It don't slow down none. I finish one adventure and it's like, "But! I want to know what happens next! SHOW ME!"

Also, I'm sorry, but. T-HARD IS NOT COMPREHENSIBLE. HE'S NOT. THIS (http://twitter.com/#!/MumbleBane) WOULD NOT BE A THING IF HE WAS.

::ahem::

And honestly, Joel Schumacher ruined Robin for me, so his not being in TDKR really doesn't seem like the worst thing...

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well this is particularly over the holidays, so the externship's not taking up my time!

OH MY GOD ONE PIECE. :DDDDDD I could go on about it forever. Isn't it great? I totally know that feeling about wanting all the next adventures - the only thing slowing me down right now is all the other things I have to read and the fact that I want to draw out the rest of the series as much as possible, because I hate the idea of being all caught up and waiting for weekly chapters. D:

hahahaha oh Bane, it's not your fault you have an accent + that random gas mask over your face...

I know many an old Batman movie was made ridiculous through the addition of Robin, but -- Tim Drake! /bias

[identity profile] celerywench.livejournal.com 2011-12-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)

I'll bite: who's your first favorite? :D Dick? Jason? Never say Damien!
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
:DDDD I have fond-ish feelings towards Jason for no reason I can really pinpoint since I don't read/watch DCU canon at all. I have fond-ish feelings for Dick too, so maybe it is just that I am fond of Robins-aside-from-Damian for inexplicable reasons. Maybe this is the skewed perception being in a fandom without knowing canon does! I have many of those fandoms, ahaha.
